Last time I checked though, Sony was doing very well with their online service and are constantly updating it with new features and functionality -> Home, Voice Chat, Video Chat, robust online multiplayer. I think the one thing it's really missing is a unified Buddy List/Messaging system, and the amount of content definitely needs to be boosted. But those are trivial in the grand scheme of things.

Sony online has been hit or miss. Somegames have great online service while others are just downright Sh*t. It's never been that much of a let down since I really don't do much online gaming but, everything Sony is trying to improve online for the most part is very much unproven.

i think everyone know the ps3 is better. but it is a differ type of better. if grphx r the only thing you care about then they r both the same and you should save $ and buy 360. but if it is the whole package as in large really good games with more things happening then u should get a ps3.

The big difference is an HDTV with an HDMI cable,but without it they are the same but on games like The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion and Fight Night Round 3,the graphics are a bit better on the Playstation 3 than the Xbox 360,I own both a PS3 and Xbox 360.

do you think it takes to design, test, manufacture, and ship those items like the HD-dvd add-on? I ask because its as though you assume a lot of this stuff is decided over night, and is magically shipped in a couple weeks.Even the games themselves, when people show PS3 "exclusive" game footage for months and then suddenly announce 360 versions that'll release on the same day, do you think they didn't already have both games long in development? My point is, the 360 has upgrades akin to the features on the PS3,yes, but they are all still optional, and all fall under the possible future upgrades made mention by MS since before the launch of the 360. which leads me to believe that they may have considered these things long before any competitors press events. And considering the upgrades are the things their customers asked for, thats even better on their part. Now if you want an example of just reacting to a competitor and throwing some things together, how about the original showing of the sixaxis. We've all seen that video and dont really need a reminder.

Very true, Blu-ray is so overhyped by Sony, but the reality is it did'nt really change things that much as what DVD did to VHS. Yes they want to sell a lot of their movies on this format, but people around the globe are also very savvy and smart - they know the benefits of waiting for the competition to manufacture their wares on the market so they can benefit on huge bargains. And what really is the number one main purpose for building the PS3?, a game console for gamers?, a Blu-ray dvd player? - ( when there's still a lot of cheaper dvd hard/softwares in the market ).

trust me when i say that... because the more 360 takes time to hard-sell HD-DVD, the more market share blu-ray gains. and yes there's no denying, we're moving up from dvd because everyone wants more data. even the inventors of dvd (toshiba) thinks it's time. there's nothing wrong in getting more at the same price (eg. price of 360 games and ps3 games).

The number of games available...well duh again, its been out an extra year over their rival Sony.

As for online gaming again due to the extra year I would expect there to be more online games for the 360 and that is a huge draw of the system. The online for Sony is finally being treated to a soon to come face lift. On-line though they have Little Big Planet, and Home coming, but these are very low cost to Sony. With 360 to add online to your game is easier as Microsoft's tools are many years in development while Sony is still working on those tools. For PS3 online, you have to have a dedicated programming company. The backbone servers for the 360 are paid for by Microsoft and Live gamers, with Sony, the idea of free is nice. The drawback is unless its something Sony really wants online for its system the Developer foots the bill for the servers (same principle for PS2, which is why Socom and FF where the only heavy online presence for the system). Sony is playing catch up. They are doing it relatively fast, but Microsoft invested over 3 years in making live what it is today. Experience is one thing that can't be bought or incorporated through cutting edge technology. You will see more PS3 online games coming down the pipe but I would wager a large sum of money alot of the delays to game releases have been due simply to the online component, example: why did motorstorm release 4 months ahead of the American counterpart? Does it look different graphically? No, thats been commented on for quite some time. So, 4 months for an average online experience in a game is alot of time (and that would be ignorantly assuming they did not work on online at all prior to the Japanese release).

As for the comment on how Microsoft operates: Umm if you've been alive over 25 years like me, then you would know that is the way it has been in the country going back to the founding. Bill is hardly the first to use a company's size and ingenuity as leverage against a rival, nor is buying a company that has new ideas or technology. This is simply the most successful of business strategies. Look back to other industry mogels such as James Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Jay Gould, and J.P. Morgan; you will notice they all used the same tactics. Are they deplorable? Depends how you look at it. Some view all of them as evil, others as innovators of the new way. Read Atlas Shrugged, and if you would like the get a glimpse of what would happen with government over-regulating these practices. As for deplorable business practices: You think Sony is clean in this regard then you are as blind as you are ignorant.

It seems to me that the differences can be summed up quite easily:

1. Graphics are roughly the same.
2. Price is roughly the same if you get the add-ons to make the 360 have all the functionality of the PS3...if not, the 360 is cheaper.
3. 360's online is better, but PSN is still good and free.
4. 360 has more games right now, but PS3 will no doubt have a great library soon as well.

Seems to me it's basically a draw...just buy the one that has the games you like and enjoy. I guess it's just too much fun to argue over which is better.

But a tactic that is turned out to be a gun to kill creativeness and to keep yourself alive is not accetable, this is the exact tactic ms is having passed 10 years, not just to technology market but also to software companies. The pc hardware you have got under your table and using right now has a great potential of power, but because of the windows limitations we need to keep upgrading it.
Ask yourself why no windows version has a game module where no services and programs running so you can take benefit of your hardwares full potential to play games, think about something like dos but with GUI. Because they want you to upgrade your hardware periodically, and put some money in to this market periodically mate.

These companies have never put a gun to your head to buy anything. Creativeness exists all around you. New programs are developed by upstart companies and can shake rock an industry on its heels. If you wish to get a free OS, you can there is always other options. If you choose to get a Linux (unix product), or even a Mac (apple) product, those options are always open to you. Even there you are seeing Mac switch to supporting Windows software, because like the video game industry you see the biggest install base being supported. I remember playing games on DOS where we had almost exclusive power of our PC's going into games, and even then it was a pain to get things to run all the time. Instruction booklets used to come with troubleshooting steps for driver problems or generic drivers to use.

There will be a trade off for all the Graphic User Interface (ie Windows) draws on power, and for convenience programs like Outlook, and your choice of web browser, or virus/spyware/adware scanner. Also, driver compatibility is a problem on the newest hardware. These new hardware sales are driven as much, if not more, by Intel/AMD/NVidia/ATI ect than by Microsoft. Games surely look vastly more impressive than the DOS days that I can assure you. You always have choice as a customer who you will support through your pocket book, if you choose a product because of convenience voice your displeasure as is your right just don't be shocked if you don't see any actions if you keep spending more on their products.

So all we have to do is play games and have fun with your choice. As it stands the 360 is a safe bet and the PS3 has potential. The 360 has proven that it has what it takes to survive and the PS3 needs a price cut.

It is what it is. The PS3 dose not have a game available that will sway non-loyalist. So far the hard care Sony fans and hard-core gamers has bought what they need. We should all realize that war now is for casual consumers. Only games can win this war. Casual consumers all know they have a choice. Those choices are:

A) Buy a 360 and get all the great games 1st & 2nd and 3rd party games. Some brand-new and others we have enjoyed for years. Xbox live along with video market place for HD movies, an option for an HD DVD drive. Rumble support for all of your games. All at a low price.

B) Buy a PS3, which will have all the same games we are used too. Blu Ray is not needed and un proven but it is a bonus if you’re a Sony enthusiast. SIXAXIS motion control features and the promise of rumble coming back. And HOME. All at the highest price point in history depending on where you live.

Xbox 360 isn't exactly Casual consumer friendly with its "cheaper" price point. And you then mention its cheaper with ALL ITS OPTIONS, which it can / isn't depending if you get into HD. Which, on the same ball you attack "Sony Enthusiasts" for wanting HD capability but exalt the option of HD for 360 which is more "unproven" the BluRay.

Just consider that most PS3 owners only have 2 gripes (since $ is obviously not a problem):

Even still, My console of choice is PS3 just because I WANT TO. The same way all the Nintendo Wii loving dudes love Nintendo when its graphically inferior and they're happy with those types of games. I respect every thing in your post. It is actually close to the point I was making. I feel we as gamers choose our consoles for our own reasons. The price will not be a problem for people like you and me so I do not want you to be offended by that statement. Mainly because it is true.

All hard-core gamers feel that way. But casual consumers do not give a D@mn about our feelings and Sony needs those people to say they will Spend $600.00 - $1000.00 for a games machine. I'm not saying Sony will fail and I'm no fortuneteller. But to not acknowledge that they have a serious up hill battle is ignorant.

I actually like the PS2 but did not keep it because the XBOX delivered better. And it is my choice to get the best product the developers can produce there fore I have no console allegiance. If APPLE gets into it and offers a better games console and than M$ and $ONY. I’m sold.

and think storgage will hurt Ms in the coming years as FMVs become more detailed (MGS and FF) Graphically Motorstorm already beats everything on the 360 it is sad to say and it is only their first games.

IMO the XMB is terrible compared to the 360s dashboard and the online display is ugly compared to the swish user guide but game wise the PS3 games appeal to me more. More fantasy and interesting game ideas (eg Lair and Heavenly sword) The 360s shooters bore me so much and yet i loved Dead Rising deeply for its originality. I reckon its up to taste. Many people will prefer shooters and amazing online features and if thats the case, get a 360. If fantasy and unique game play suits you then go with the playstation. Personally i like a bit of both (online and uniqueness and i am fortunate to have both). Seriously, make your own minds up because there is nobody who can tell you which is better but yourself.

I've played the final build. It still has jaggies, the people and objects in the background look like a PS1 games. The cars look great and the physics are tops but that is it. Motor storm is a showpiece for new PS3 owners not a killer app.

The major advantage PS3 has with Motor Storm is the 360 has no 1st party off road racer. =]
