Arriving on the PC a full year after it was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Dark Sector is a stylish action game in which you assume the role of Hayden Tenno, an elite black-ops agent with an infection that mutates his right hand into a lethal glaive. The boomerang-like glaive is an incredibly versatile weapon and, in conjunction with a decent selection of firearms, serviceable cover mechanics, and intelligent enemies, it keeps the single-player game entertaining from start to finish. The story is a mess, and sadly there's no online support for multiplayer in the PC version, but come here looking for 10 to 12 hours of satisfying combat and you won't be disappointed.
The Good:
* Killing enemies with the glaive never gets old
* Protagonist's abilities make him a lot of fun to control
* Mostly intelligent enemies and varied boss battles
The Bad:
* No online multiplayer
* Only two multiplayer modes and five maps
* Storytelling is pitiful
Chris Needham writes: "With the launch of both the PS4 and the Xbox One now a fading memory, the current generation of gaming consoles has well and truly established itself, with games such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Batman: Arkham Knight and, of course, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, all justifiably taking the limelight. Here at Power Up Gaming, however, we’re not so keen to let go of the past. Originally starting out our coverage as primarily a retro games outlet, we take great pleasure in revelling in the titles of yesteryear."
Bulletstorm, Folklore, and 3D Dot Heroes are just a few of the great hidden gems on PS3
"ZL: Before we knew of the Xbox 360, or anything concrete about the PlayStation 3, we had heard the name Dark Sector. This was a time when what would become the Wii was known only as the mysterious “Revolution.” The 7th Generation of video game consoles hadn’t even begun and we already received a taste of what was on the horizon with a video released by Digital Extremes."
Great article. Great game. Man I wish they'd make a sequel or just re release it or something.
OPM: Digital Extremes’ game director Steve Sinclair has, “lifted the kimono” (his words) on the history behind Dark Sector and how publishing pressure took the game away from its original vision. A vision that the set to return with the free-to-play Warframe on PS4.
That's interesting, They approached Sony with ideas several times, since they are independent, I wished Sony would have published one of their ideas as an exclusive! I loved Dark Sector, even the original concept of the game! Going to see about Warframe at launch.
it was originally banned in australia, so i picked up second hand when I was in the US.
it was good old fashioned fun and quite challenging on the harder difficulties. not original (apart from the cool glaive), but still well-executed. nothing like being in the zone charging your glaive and slicing limbs, while performing regular FPS gunplay.
i got the game the day it came out and played it from start to finish and it was great.i recomend it to anyone that likes guns and blood.my favorite thing was the slo mo with the glade.
though my thoughts about it are influenced by getting it for $13 new. I don't think I would have the same opinion if I paid $60.
If you can find it on sale its worth the distraction.
I don't like Vgames getting marked down for lack of multiplayer....every f'ing game doesn't need it. I've lost 8 Days and Getaway because of this attitude.
