The Top Five Best Launch Titles Of All Time

"A launch title can't really break a console (Or, maybe it can, see Luigi's Mansion) but it certainly can make one, and to celebrate my love for judging a system entirely on the first games that come out for it, here are my top five favorite launch titles of all time."

I would have put Halo: Combat Evolved on that list. I'm not a fan of the CURRENT state of the franchise, but back in the day that was THE FPS to be playing on consoles...and the fact that it was a launch title gave you quite a compelling reason to go out and buy an Xbox right away.

EvilCackle5495d ago

I'd agree. It's also the first franchise that comes to mind when people think of Xbox/Xbox 360.

Bnet3435495d ago

Halo should of made the list. It made Xbox what it is today.

king dong5495d ago

halo was a classic game, and without doubt, was a super launch title for the xbox.

Montrealien5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

Author fails at research, Sonic the hedghog and super mario brothers where not even launch titles. Halo was, and does deserve a spot in this kind of list.

I swear, sometimes I wonder if people that write these so called videogame arcticles actually know their stuff.

otherZinc5495d ago

if Halo isn’t on the list.

Bonsai12145495d ago

agreed. the first halo should be on that list. it was an excellent launch title.

greenmeanie5494d ago

Agreed! Halo all the way should have been added. And wii sports is really not that great of a launch title. I mean sure it was decent, but after the novelty wore off.... I would have put Twilight Princess in its place for sure! Author needs to do more research. These are probably his favorite games for each console.

1. Super Mario Brothers
2. Halo
3. Sonic
4. Super Mario 64
5. Resistance

Montrealien5495d ago

I hate to break it to you, but super mario brothers and sonic the hedghog where not launch titles.

EvilCackle5495d ago

Super Mario Bros. was a North American launch title.

Montrealien5495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

I agree, I was wrong on super mario bros, but sonic I know for sure was not..

s8anicslayer5495d ago

Where is Soul Caliber for the dreamcast that list, I think the DC had the best bunch of launch titles especially title thatset a new mark for graphics at the time

BenderDGreat825495d ago

I was JUST about to put the same thing. Soul Calibur was an amazing launch title that easily trumps Battle Arena Toshinden (btw, I think Ridge Racer was a better launch title for the PSOne). Back to the subject, to this day, Soul Calibur really set the bar for fighting games. I mean, go on YouTube and look at gameplay vids...did you see them? funny how a game that's TEN YEARS OLD looks so great still right? EGM (RIP) said it best: Try to find a flaw. Go on, try it." I played that game non-stop and I wasn't able to. I'll never forget 9.9.99 (Dreamcast launch) when my jaw dropped to the floor when I realized how amazing the future of gaming would be.

Guy1695495d ago

Sonic on Genesis wasn't the launch title.

it came out in like 1991.

ThatArtGuy5495d ago

Exactly. Sonic was the second pack in title for the Genesis. The first was Altered Beast, which WAS a launch title.

Switch Sports Will Never Live Up To Wii Sports

The Switch just isn't equipped for a killer sports title like the Wii was

A lot of the points made here are true, yet let's give it a chance, because like the author said, the Wii was a motion control console and everyone did view it as such while the switch is not, so the way people view the game determines how much they invested in it, so again let's give it a chance and see

Ratty807d ago

Wii sports was truly atrocious and you're saying Switch Sports will be even worse? It does not bode well for Switch Sports indeed.

Fntastic807d ago

Wii Sports was ok for screwing around, but the games lacked depth. Also I'm not sure why it seems like they decided to stick with the automatic player movement so all you need to do is swing to hit something. Very noob friendly but not as much fun IMO.

CrimsonWing69807d ago (Edited 807d ago )

Wii Sports was THE game for casuals. I don’t feel many casuals own the Switch. I can’t see this doing the numbers Wii Sports did.

Einhander1971806d ago

Course it won't, the Wii was a phenomenon. Something new with the motion tech. A curiosity to almost everyone. Obviously Switch sports won't create the same impact.

Here's Why Wii Sports Needs To Come To the Nintendo Switch

Nintendo could be sitting on a gold mine with a past favorite.

Because we all miss accidentally throwing our Wiimotes at the TV, so let's throw some Joy-Cons.

Neonridr838d ago

VR is the same way, wrist straps for a reason.

Neonridr838d ago

I loved the golf from Wii Sports Resort.

Cuzizkool837d ago

I was always confused by Nintendo’s decision to kill the franchise. “Super” stayed with Mario titles even after the Super Nintendo. They can still use the Wii name. Hell it’s been so long that releasing a new one, or even an HD remaster, will tap into that nostalgia market.

DazaMc837d ago

Super Mario launched on the NES not the Super NES.

septemberindecember836d ago

Super was never because of the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Bros launched on the NES. The Super is because it's an indirect sequel to Mario Bros.

They can just call it Nintendo Sports or something, but using the Wii name would be a bit confusing.

Bigman4k837d ago

Yeah i agree but i don't think Nintendo will be bringing wii sports to the Nintendo Switch samething goes for diddykong racing

shadowT1147d ago (Edited 1147d ago )

Missing Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS5 in this list. Love this game!

Orchard1146d ago

They probably didn't include it (and a bunch of others) because of their criteria for "lasting influence on the industry".

SMMM is a good game, but it doesn't stand out enough to have THAT huge of an impact on the industry as a whole - especially when compared to games like Mario, Halo & Tetris.

Sonic-and-Crash1146d ago (Edited 1146d ago )

i would also add Sonic and Crash (pun intended lol) ...Sonic 1 on MD is a all time classic game that helped MegaDrive to separate itself and explode in sales... also Crash Bandicoot ...while not exactly a launch game..it was pretty close to launch for PS1 (in Europe was almost a launch game as PS1 released later here) and trademarked the start of PS era

Orchard1146d ago

Totally agree - those two games were huge for the industry & direction of platformers.

p.s. love the irony of your name for this post :P

jaymacx1146d ago

Sonic was not a launch game. I keep seeing people say it was, but maybe they were so young it’s when they got the console. Crash bandicoot definitely wasn’t even close to being a launch game . These games are system sellers though.

septemberindecember1146d ago

@Sonic-and-Crash

Neither Sonic nor Crash released anywhere close to the launch of their respective consoles. Crash released a full year after the western launch of the PS1 (and two full years after Japan's launch), and Sonic released two years after Genesis in US, and a year after Mega Drive in PAL regions.

CorndogBurglar1146d ago

I knoe it wasn't a massive influence on the industry, but Condemned: Criminal Origins on Xbox 360 is one of my all time favorite launch games.

Fluttershy771146d ago

Ok you love it, and that's great but I think you are missing the point of the article... In any case to judge something like this I think you need time, currently we can see the tree but not the forest

darthv721147d ago

Soul Calibur... that game still holds up to this day. Such an excellent game.

jgilbert111146d ago

That game has aged like a fine wine. Still go back to it all the time on my Dreamcast.

Minute Man 7211146d ago

I should have never sold my Dreamcast

ZeekQuattro1146d ago

Mitsurugi was seriously wounded but the soul still burns.

Orchard1146d ago

Super Mario 64 + Halo were my favorite launch games - outstanding games.

Shuckylad1146d ago

Super Mario World SNES
Mario 64 N64
Halo Xbox
Motorstorm Ps3
Zelda BOTW switch

The Wood1146d ago

Motor storm. . . Yeah. . Underrated

Jericho13371146d ago

Not a launch title though.

Omegasyde1146d ago

In USA not a launch title but yes in EU etc.

frostypants1146d ago

Super Mario World is still my my favorite of all Mario games and in the discussion for best side scroller ever.
