Xbox 360 Holding Onto English Tales of Vesperia

The PlayStation 3 version of Tales of Vesperia is much more than a simple port to another platform, including tons of new voice work and numerous new side quests.

However, these additions are a double-edge sword that is now killing Vesperia's chances of being released outside of Japan on the PS3.

Ever heard of a murphy sandwich? This tastes a lil like that.

Rock Bottom5502d ago

First it was "NO! it's not coming to the PS3, not a freaken chance".

Now it's "Yeah, but you're not getting it in English".

A punch of fanboys betting on a sick horse if you ask me.

jadenkorri5501d ago (Edited 5501d ago )

cause ive already traded in the 360 version already, be the last 360 game i buy if i think its coming to ps3

PirateThom5502d ago

It'll be released outside Japan.

PirateThom5502d ago

I think it's a pretty good argument.

I'd also counter with the fact Tales of Vesperia hasn't yet been released in Europe for 360, so there's still a user base here that wants the game.

Fact is, they're putting a lot of work into the remake to just release it for Japan, so why no give it to the rest of the world who want it?

gaffyh5502d ago

@PirateThom - Also to further your argument. The devs are localising the 360 version for EU and have already localised for US. It won't take too much more effort to simply use the same voice tracks (plus all the extras) and release the game on PS3 in US and EU.

jackdoe5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

I get the feeling that most people who will disagree with you to be 360 fanboys who don't want the title to come out for the PS3 in the U.S.

Anyways, Namco Bandai would be stupid not to release the title in the U.S., especially with 80% of the localization done (the PS3 version adds one book of new script, out of five books, hence, 80%. One of the previous four books was dedicated to event scenes, hence the "double the VA remark" as there is indeed double the VA in event scenes).

Sure, there is no "Only On" logo in the JP version, while there is one on the US version. However, that means about nothing as seen by NG Sigma 2. After all, Namco Bandai could just release the title as Tales of Vesperia Redux to get around an issue like that.

Immortal Kaim5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

The problem is, as a 360 owner (and soon to be PS3 owner), I don't want to wait another 8-9 months for a PS3 EU/AUS release, hell we don't even have the damn game here on 360 yet.

So it will definitely cater more towards PS3 only owners and I guess those that a really into it. It's a shame though, cause the extra content sounds great...

Edit: Apparently Gaffyh and I don't want to play Tales of Vesperia on the 360 and are happy to wait for the PS3 version... Who would have known? :)

gaffyh5502d ago

@Immortal Kaim - Yeah I see what you mean, I'm going to definitely get the X360 version as soon as it releases in EU, been waiting for ages, and I don't really care that much about extra content in the PS3 version.

But this is good news for PS3 only owners, at least they get to play the game and they get more content for their wait.

Immortal Kaim5502d ago

Agree Gaffyh. I suppose If I really enjoy the game and eventually want to experience the extra content that option is open, but for now, I just want to play it. :)

Plus we have Star Ocean 4 coming out soon as well I think? Would you happen to know the release dates of these 2 games?

Cheers

jackdoe5502d ago

I'm a multiplatform owner, and I could wait for Tales of Vesperia to appear on the PS3.

See, that is what I hate about today's world of "Timed Exclusives". You get screwed either way if you are a multiplat owner. Buy it early, good for you. However, you run the risk of feeling ripped off when the "Super Deluxe Edition with double the story, fewer plot holes, and an extra charcter" appears on the console that you did not buy the game for. However, when you wait for that "Super Deluxe Edition" you wait a year or more. So you get screwed either way. However, the nice thing is that there are plenty of games to kill time with, so waiting isn't that bad, unless you desperately need an RPG to play.

gaffyh5502d ago

@2.7 - Dunno the exact dates, but as far as I've heard, both of them are coming out at some point in June. Kinda annoying that the TOV localisation has taken this long though.

IdleLeeSiuLung5502d ago

That is exactly what the publisher wants. They want you to pay for it twice!

I suspect this will become even more frequent....

SaiyanFury5502d ago

Namco-Bandai has been releasing Tales of games for years in North America. First they brought Tales of Vesperia on the 360 because the system came out first, and I'm virtually 100% positive it will come to the PS3. Hell, leave out the English voice acting, I always prefer the Japanese language tracks anyways. Namco also brought Eternal Sonata to the 360 first, and now there's a PS3 version. Vesperia will come. Time will prove me right.

Kain815502d ago

the same goes to Eternal Sonata.
Same with NG2

ShawnCollier5502d ago

True, but the Japanese version was missing the label, and from what was said in Famitsu, they knew the game was going to be ported eventually.

If it exists for timed exclusives, then by that logic, the Japanese version would have also had the label.

We don't know the terms of the agreement (it's to be assumed some money traded hands due to the increased level of quality in the voice work and getting an English version of the opening theme when Dawn of the New World just had a instrumental theme), so there could have been a GCN Symphonia issue here (hence the label on the North American version.

PirateThom5502d ago

As noted, BioShock had the lable is well in Europe at least, it literally means nothing.

El_Colombiano5502d ago

That label mean nothing. Most "exclusives" on 360 usually aren't exclusive at all.

Critical_Hit5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

It's been shown that the "Only on Xbox 360" sticker is temporary. This game will definitely hit NA, especially since most of the localization is already done from the 360 version.

militant075502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

ETERNAL SONTATA wanst labeld with "only on xbox360"

disagree ??! i have the game and i bought on month 1 , and its not labeld.

GUNS N SWORDS5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

lost odyssey
blue dragon
halo3
gears2
pgr3
pgr4
forza2
kameo
perfect dark zero
Viva Piñata
Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise
and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

have "only on xbox" labels as well, and from the last time i checked they still do. ps3 games are in the same position, not all but only few are going multiplat as well (like tekken6 and ff13).

edit to (Jager),....... since when did i put that in my statement?

Jager5502d ago

@ Guns n Swords

FF13 and Tekken 6 are made by 3rd party devs, no First party ps3 game is going multiplat.

PirateThom5502d ago

What?

All the games Microsoft either own the IP rights or paid for?

Not really a winning argument there.

El_Colombiano5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

GUNS N SWORDS,

You just epically failed. Hard. All those are owned or payed for by Microsoft themselves. What we mean to say is that 3rd parties aren't stupid enough to limit themselves to the 360. Most 3rd party "Exclusives" on 360 are also on PS3. Even some 1st party "Exclusives" show up on other platforms, throwing away the need to buy a 360 (which are what exclusives are for). Now 3rd parties know PS3 is where the money is and make real exclusives for it.

PS3 EA's biggest earner anybody? Konami's biggest earner anybody? Yeah.

Marceles5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

The "Only on Xbox 360" tag is usually only on Microsoft Game Studios boxes or games that are also on Windows, which they also include that. But most of the time if it's not made by MGS, the tag isn't on there. For instance, Star Ocean 4 doesn't have it yet it's supposed to be totally exclusive to the 360.

I wouldn't really take the tag seriously other then them meaning "Only on Xbox 360" and then in little writing you need a microscope for saying "at the time of release".

7ero H3LL5502d ago

Jager, he's obviously talking about 3rd party, and so is "bioshock", "tales of vesperia" and "mgs4" for that same matter.

GUNS N SWORDS5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

yes, i am talking about 3rd parties,

"All those are owned or payed for by Microsoft themselves. What we mean to say is that 3rd parties aren't stupid enough to limit themselves to the 360."

(El_Colombiano) you don't really have no proof or ANY detail as to what deals Microsoft makes (owned). and wii has 3rd party games as well.....and even though the wii is weaker than 360 those games are using the wii to it's capabilities, so i don't see why you even brought that up (owned twice)

.....and what do you mean WE, i was never directing my statement towards you. "What WE mean to say"

(sh!t, you make it a habit of taking things so personal.....(owned 3 times :)

"Now 3rd parties know PS3 is where the money is and make real exclusives for it."

.......and yet a lot of 3rd parties games run better on 360 even to this day. (owned 4 times :)

El_Colombiano5502d ago

"(El_Colombiano) you don't really have no proof or ANY detail as to what deals Microsoft makes (owned). and wii has 3rd party games as well.....and even though the wii is weaker than 360 those games are using the wii to it's capabilities, so i don't see why you even brought that up"

The fact the Microsoft Game Studios logo is on the game kinda maybe means its first party or second party. Just in case you're a tad slow, that means Microsoft owns the game's rights. You seem to be lost too, as I was never talking about hardware capabilities. I was talking about how third parties seem to never make a game for only 360 anymore. I don't see why you even brought that up.

"Now 3rd parties know PS3 is where the money is and make real exclusives for it."

"and yet a lot of 3rd parties games run better on 360 even to this day."

Again, you've lost yourself in this bickering. It seems its too much for you to comprehend. We are talking about 3rd party games made only for 360 coming to PS3. I said it earlier. PS3 is where the cash is at for these companies and they know it. Thats why the 360 is constantly losing so called exclusives, while the PS3 continues to rack'em up.

And to the whole games run better on 360, we both know which console is supirior graphically. Petty little third party games don't matter. Although if that was the case, I could easily play them 10x better on my PC.

Now stop embarrassing yourself.

daous5501d ago

"lost odyssey
blue dragon"

Were RPGs made by Mistwalker and another company that was fully owned by MS Japan. MS fully funded these collaborative RPG projects for the 360. However, they don't own IP rights to the Blue Dragon FRANCHISE, since a DS game came out last year. But it's likely MS owns the publishing rights for the original Blue Dragon RPG, which they helped develop.

"halo3"

Created by Bungie Studios, who were bought by MS. MS also owns the rights to the HALO franchise, even when Bungie left them as a 1st party.

"gears2"

This is the only game that supports the "only on Xbox" label from the ones you mentioned. Indeed, MS does not own the rights to Gears of War, but the 3rd party / middleware company, EPIC Games.

"pgr3
pgr4"

Were developed by Bizarre Creations, but fully PUBLISHED by Microsoft, worldwide. Although Bizarre Creations is not owned by MS, Microsoft does own the publishing and IP rights to the PGR franchise (much like how Sony owns the Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance franchises, despite Insomniac Games not being owned by Sony).

"kameo
perfect dark zero
Viva Piñata
Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise
and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts"

These games were made by the developers at Rare, who were BOUGHT by Microsoft after Nintendo didn't want to buy them when Rare was on sale. Thus Rare is a 1st party MS studio, so obviously they would be Xbox 360 exclusive.

As you can see, all but one of these games were either created by 1st party MS studios or the franchises are fully owned by MS.

I really enjoyed this article, it was a good read. This quote gave me a chuckle, because it's true!:

"Pretty much every JRPG involves the player’s characters going from barely being able to lift a sword to killing God"

indysurfn1399d ago

LOL...exaggeration but I get your just making a point. No one can Kill God. Don't drink Satan's cool-aide he is just trying to recruit you (backwards recruit)

Tross1399d ago

He probably only has the grape kind anyways. All the folk up in heaven surely hog all the good flavours.

BrainSyphoned1399d ago

Final Fantasy 15 the ultimate delayed game with delayed story dlc shoveled in at the last second. Doesn’t ring the gratifying bell when I see that stupid car at all. Article+thumbnail is like describing a 5star meal while watching your cat clean its backside.

nommers1399d ago

More specifically I would say JRPGs are progressive gratification. Basically like listening to prog music vs anything else which imo is the best. Even if a JRPG is all about the journey, generally speaking JRPGs keep getting better as opposed to other games which usually have their high points come in either too soon, or the best parts just aren't nearly as impactful.

indysurfn1399d ago

Also don't forget the direct comparison that the old Square Enix president made. He said Western players like TWITCH games and eastern players love Cerebral games. Now it was taken as a racist slam. But he meant it as one of the reasons outside of development time and cost return on investment(ROI). But he had a true point people here are TRAINED to like instant stuff. And people there are trained to like delayed over the top stuff. It is not a intelligence slam. I'm glad I LOVE the later gratification! Because it is way better!

iofhua21399d ago

I like JRPG's for the big anime tiddies.

indysurfn1398d ago

lol.....I stand corrected!

“Tales series is considered one of the top three Japanese RPG series next to RPG giants like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.”

How you gonna talk about the top three JRPG franchises and not mention Pokémon, the top selling series in the genre?

This is how the top JRPG series stack up

1. Pokémon - 340M
2. Final Fantasy - 144M
3. Dragon Quest - 78M

A decade later, Tales of Vesperia might still be the ideal Tales game

Ten years ago, early in the lives of both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Microsoft scored a coup when it secured the latest game from Namco's long-running Tales franchise - which had been almost exclusive to PlayStation since Tales of Destiny in the '90s.

Things got even more heated after Tales of Vesperia eventually did end up on PS3, in even better form, with new content and characters. But much to PS3 fans' consternation, Namco Bandai opted to keep the enhanced port Japan-exclusive.

Until last year, when Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition was announced for all existing platforms. The question remains: Was it worth the wait?

I don’t think there’s any definitive ideal Tales game since they all have their own individual merit from one another
