E3 Preview: Sony Shows their Cards Early, Microsoft Stays Silent

The Power Review: Some big news items have come up recently related to Sony and announcements that are going to be made by them at their E3 press conference. By far the biggest on so far is the information about the PSP-4000 or PSP2 that is surfacing. According to sources, it is going to be debuted at E3 and is slated for release in December of this calendar year.

The PSP2 is still just a rumor and I don't think Sony confirmed that it was going to be showed at E3. Sony still probable have more games to reveal at E3 that the public isn't aware of.

I still think the PSP2 thing is fake. How in the hell can Sony afford to release a NEW system, when they've only just started making a profit on the PS3? It may be PSP-4000, but that is still PSP1, PSP2 suggests a whole new system, with new game, new processor/GPU etc.

Seriously. Last year they were silent up until E3, then at E3 at was "OMG! A multiconsole release not due out for 2 years, Lips, You're in a crappy B movie, and Netflix, a service only available in the US that was already available to anyone who had a computer. Neat-o!"

I'm not holding out for anything earth shaking from MS this year. Gameplay for the Halo expansion? You know what I bet it looks like? Halo. Alan Wake? Maybe the PC version will show.
Believe me, I want to be surprised. I want a reason to turn on my 360 again now that Fable 2 and Gears 2 are done, I'm just not going to be holding my breath.

like I said before. Everyone kept saying "Wait for GDC wait for GDC!!!!" I replied. "And after nothing is shown there everyone will be shouting 'Wait for E3 Wait for E3'" and guess what. I was right. After E3 it will be leipzig and TGS and 2010 and so on. How about you stop waiting. Sell your 360 and get a console with Decent games.

@ GEC I had a 360. I sold it. I have a blog on here that I even go into why I sold it. They will announce something but with everything sony has out right now they would have shown something already... We have been waiting and they have nothing. Even if they have something it... Doesn't matter.

I am a proud fanboy. I think sony has innovated and offered more to the gaming community a whole lot more then MS has this or last gen. I feel they are great for giving me free online. Giving me games I want to play. The Only thing the 360 has currently I care even the slightest about is Fable 2... but thats a very very minor thing to me when compared to everything else I have.... I also feel at E3 it will be announced for PC... If not oh well. Hopefully Diablo 3 will be out soon and I wont even bother with Fable 2.

Truth is they may announce something. A Halo RPG or something... It doesn't matter now because unless they announce like 15 new IP's that look amazing they wont even be close to what Sony is CURRENTLY even pre E3 themselves offering in the near future or already... I am a Fanboy and don't care who knows it. The PS3 is where games are and I support anyone who switches.

Sony shows its cards early because they have so many cards that it doesn't even matter anymore. Sony has this gen on lock down, all they need is cross game voice chat and the ps3 will be the best console ever created,, it already is if you ask me. Ratchet, Uncharted, God of War, MAG, Motorstorm 3, The Show, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, WKC, Tears of Blood, Infamous, Warhawk 2, and so many more that I cant even think of right now. Sony litterally has to show all its cards because there are people out there that really think the ps3 doesn't have any games. Its not Sony's fault that most people are ignorant and dont know any better.

What a fanboy statement.. I've spent the last 3 years playing amazing games on my 360.

GDC does sometime provide some game announcements but it is primarily a developer conference. Last year Epic/MS did show Gears 2 but that was mainly due to the engine. I was disappointed no new game announcements came from MS but E3 is where they take place. MS has stated they have big things coming at E3 so I say let's wait and see. If they don't announce anything or announce a bunch of casual/multiplatform titles I will be there right with you complaining.

EDIT: @Jinxster Yes I read your blog and I think you made a mistake selling your Xbox 360 but you had your reasons. I own both and I will enjoy the best of everything and I don't have to worry about not getting something.

MS has already delivered and should be given a fair chance to show up at E3 and do it again. Sure last year wasn't there biggest year but in a way it was. They had a ton of stuff they put out and held down (rpg's)as well as nabbing a few Sony exclusives. When Sony released the PS3 all you could hear was wait wait wait, and now that MS is trying to put together some good realistic news it's a problem. I really hope they have a great show just to shut up the people that act as if MS can do no right and Sony no wrong. SOny has shown way to much if you ask me and have a tendency to push back half there games by at least a year or two.The good thing about MS is the fact that they only announce things that will make it within a certain time frame, and don't hype there stuff knowing it's years away.

Yeah it had some issues but they fixed it for the most part which was great. Speaking of Gears2 you gotta admit the game looked freaking incredible on some of the later stages. I wish somebody would put together a video of the best moments in gears2 and kz2 side by side. For a game that took only 2 years to make it's crazy what could of happened in 5.

Very fair point. Too me it's just that PC gaming after the initial investment is so much better for me personally. All games are cheaper when released on PC by like 10 bucks usually and have free online(Except Blizzard games... Bastages) I truly do feel I am only missing out on 1 game and thats not worth it to me... to each his own and bubs for you. That was a very fair point.

I am a fanboy but I have a PSP, DS, PS3, Wii, Gaming PC and a ton of classic systems. The only thing I don't have is a 360 and I just sold my Original Xbox as well but... Yeah...

Of the 2 evils I'll take the one that doesn't make you pay to play and offers things free without the nickle and diming. As well as allows user generated content and many many many other things... PSP 2 will not come out this year. They JUST announced LittleBIGPlanet, motorstorm AND Jak and Daxter for PSP due to come out this year, aswell as hearing in an interview that 50 to 60% of psp titles due to release this year haven't even been announced yet and will be at E3.

It would be a terrible business decision to announce a whole new handheld console for the end of the year too. If you think it will your just hyping yourself for a big dissapointment.

Really you can call me a fanboy. I am man. I am kind of extreme as well it's fine.

DLC is most of what MS is announcing and even if they say "We get an exclusive character for FF13" I still feel potential buyers will look at more then that. To MS it seems tat DLC is their big deal while Sony is more about overall package. DLC is all paid for. Essentially with Fallout 3 for example you get the whole game on wither system but for a price you can get more on 360... So it is kind of pointless to argue as well. Especially when most everything is on PC too... What I mean by this is the game is 65$. The MS package is 90+ or so for everything... So essentially for 6 hours more you gotta pay a premium of 25+ dollars...

i had issues with gears 2. I played it at at my Girlfriends parents with her brother... I was not impressed for a long list of reasons I wont go into. Thats NOT the fanboy in me. I really wont even buy it when it comes to PC because I didn't feel it was anything special.

As far as PS3 exclusives in the early times. Games like Warhawk for example were just cool. Getting in a plane and fighting a tank and riding in a jeep and all that was so much more fun then anything I had played before it. Massive maps with tons of options and just pure fun... I have yet to find that anywhere else bro. Also I really do like the games for the games. If Banjo was Exclusive to the PS3 it would still be a POS I would not have played... Gears maybe because of the hype behind it but thats it... Just being honest. If Lair came out today I probably wouldn't buy it but for an early on title it was pretty cool man... The key word being "fun"

What "Empty promises" has the PS3 made? Killzone is out and is bar none the best looking FPS or game on consoles by far. other aspects like balance may need work but thats it plain and simple...

If E3 sways me then I will truly apologize but all I expect is DLC announcements, Live updates, Maybe a game or 2 that probably wont be all that great and a whole bunch of Power point charts that have skewed numbers on sales...

Microsoft has the money to compete but they need good ideas. Live was good, FF13 was good but how many discs swaps to play that behemoth. In reality I think that there specs are going to limit what they can do and rely on DLC to bolster games that would otherwise fit if they had went HDDVD in the beginning. Had xbox done that they could have had this generation. Something interesting may be shown at E3 just no more game rip offs like Lips and Ninja Blade bring some originality. No More Halo please something new for once.

PSP 2 isn't just a rumor. It fits so well into the 5/10 year plan for them to have PSP 2 ready at E3 this year. Although Launch is probally going to be next year.

Microsoft has plenty of cards including the Xbox 720 which might show up this year as it is rumored to launch in 2010.

Sony and Nintendo have plenty of cards left to show as well. There are at least 3-10 unknown games coming from each side this E3.

Even without any major games being shown at E3. The 360 has done fine so far with a lack of console exclusives and still manage to get away with charging for live. Just a long as they keep up their strong advertising strategy and continue to bribe developers for games, the people will be convinced.

IMO MS's strategy for the whole year is all about multiplat games. They dont expect Sony to drop PS3 price any time soon, and they know that Sony exclusives are pushing consoles but not to the level to outstrip the xbox360. Beyond that, MS gaming division took a heavy blow last year cause the xbox price drop, and MS needs to keep the spending at the bare minimum. Expect no more than one or two new titles in E3 from MS, and then probably TBA 2010.

Since Sony has already announced plenty of games, I'm mostly looking forward to new updates on Exclusives we already know of like MAG, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, etc... and possibly get some confirmed release dates on those games.

In terms of new game announcements, I'm greatly looking forward to Kojima's new game announcemnt, a possible MGS5 announcement, and the possibility of Team ICO finally shedding light on their game

Alan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction are pretty much the only 2 games on Microsoft's side that I want to see more info on. Even though Sony has announced a lot, I'm pretty sure they a few games up their sleeve for both the PSP and PS3 that they haven't announced yet.

Without a doubt last years biggest MS news at E3 was getting another game multi-platform. That's nice for people that just own a 360 and want the game but I own both and I have preferred exclusive games over ANY multi-plat game this gen.

I own just about all the SP3 exclusives and I own Gears 2 and Ninja Blade which are all exclusives and I have enjoyed each and every one of them so much more than multi-plats...exclusives imo just walways end up being better games but that ofc is just my personal preference.

Please MS give me some great exclusive 360 news at E3 this year!

Oh yeah, I remember Sony won easily by showing multiple games including game of the year LittleBigPlanet, MAG or GoW 3 first teaser.

MS on the other hand showed nothing except that a PS3 JRPG would come to 360 too (nice but it will be still exclusive on PS3 in Japan, and is developed on PS3 first + PS3 will get the best version, so yeah cool)

It was easily PS3 year last year, MS showed nothing except Feable 1.5 and Gears 1.5, vs 20+ AA exclusives on PS3, including games of the year LBP and MGS4 according to meta. But you're right, 2009 will be worse, AAA exclusives are more 30-0 for PS3 than 20-2 this year.

360 owners could of easily said the same thing about PS3 owners for its first two years. The 360 has many great games in its library, granted the recent releases are not as good as the PS3's but you can't deny it has some good games. Its not like good games stop being good games the older they get anyway, in 5 years Gears, or Bioshock, or Halo 3 will still be great just like how all the classic games (Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, any Metal Gear and on and on) are still fun to play eventhough they are outdated compared to today's games.

PS3 had Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ratchet & Clank TOD, and Heavenly Swords plus the infamous Lair. I bought my PSP-2000 like less then a year ago now so I will not buy the PSP2 in december( if it really comes for the cristmas) and I will wait to see if the portable vg will be really good indead.

Besides the fect that every one wants a new PSP to have dual analogs, two L/R buttons and etc I want to see if it will have a REAL WEB BROWSER so I don't need to turn on my PC or PS3 just to check my e-mails real quick.

Microsoft at last year E3 was lame, there major announcement was that a Sony exclusive is multiplatform and is still exclusive to PS3 in a region where JRPG makes 60% of there business. I think the issue with Microsoft right now is that they are trying too hard to capture Sony and Nintendo's audience while forgetting about there core audience. This year I can expect Microsoft to show MGS5 as a multiplatform game as there big gun.

Sony had a great showing last year and they will have another one only if they show God of War3. They will have the new Twisted Metal to show as well as they will probably show GT5, WarHawk 2, Quantum Theory and a couple of other titles. Plus the usual gameplay of Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Ratchet, plus the list of PSP games. I don't expect Team ICO's announcement before TGS09 & I doubt Sony will be announcing a PSP2 so soon. PSP has just gotten noticed by devs like UbiSoft and others. Plus with all the financial troubles I doubt anyone would want to manage 4 systems.

Look I used to own a 360 loved it at the time. The original gears is easily in the top 5 for the generation. I gave my 360 to my brother before he went to college and bought myself a PS3 in late 07.

Seriously, until about 6 months ago I wondered if I made the right choice. MS made plenty of really smart moves to start this generation but they really seem to be running out of steam. DVD9 & RROD are biting them in the ass. No matter how much better their advertising is they need decent games to promote. They need to win E3 to justify xbox purchases moving forward. If you bought a 360 right away you have had 2 solid years of gaming, the first year lacked in games a little. But what are you excited about moving forward? The 360 seems to be fading.

Everyone seems to have this attitude that Sony needs to catch MS. I see it as MS needs to find a way not to blow it. If they end up with a lackluster E3 and 2009 they will end up losing this generation, and losing respect for the next gen. Sony has not played a great hand but finally seems to be on track outside of advertising. The real question is what does MS have up its sleeve?

I think a new PSP announcement would be cool. I just don't know if portable technology has increased enough to the point where it would be significantly better than the PSP is now. I do believe touch-screen functionality would enhance it's gameplay however. I really love my DS for all the great innovative games it gets, but I hate the low power of the system. Imagine playing a game like Zelda Phantom Hourglass or The World Ends With You with PSP caliber graphics. That would be awesome.

I don't believe the PSP2 is set to arrive any more than the price cut for the PS3. Sony has denied both, b/c they're not ready for either.

As for Sony showing all the cards, that's only a half truth as a good portion of Sony's 20 studio's are working on titles we don't know anything about. No doubt there's a few 3rd party exclusives to be announced as well, like the Katamari and Quantum Theory.

I don't know about 360 exclusives, but there no doubt will be some exclusive DLC in the pipeline.

for PS3 are showing up they better be leaps and bounds of what they delivered with GTA4 and Lost and Damned. I liked Lost and Damned better than 4, but both neither looked or played from what I had hoped they would've.

They personally let me down with GTA4, but now the excuse of their games being multi... can't be used. They better have my 60 gig PS3 swetin' bullets, with all the tech they will have at the helm for these 3 exclusives. It's time to put up or shut up for them, in my opinion.

If they really had something to talk about it would have been hinted at all the times they had a mic they could spew into. I can't believe they used all the time they had behind a mic to only talk about how much better they were doing sells wise than the competition without even hinting at a lineup that wasn't filled with games "the other guy" has.
