Does GTA have a place on Nintendo Platforms?

"We were all speculating on how well GTA: Chinatown Wars was going to do on the Nintendo DS when Nintendo announced it at last year's E3. With the DS's demographic skewed on the younger side of things with older adults as well as female gamers all getting in on the DS act, selling a mature rated game on that platform was always going to be a difficult task. But if any game was to overcome that obstacle, it would have been Grand Theft Auto. At least one would think, right? Chart Track has released their latest figures for the UK and no surprise really, GTA: Chinatown wars fails to break the top 5 and comes in at number 6. Not a bad position at any stretch of the imagination for a game, but this is GTA we are talking about, not just any game. So after all this, one must ask, does GTA have a place on Nintendo platforms?"

I found that Chinatown Wars translated beautifully to the DS, and it should be selling way more than it is.

butterfinger5519d ago

I thought it looked pretty good, so I may go ahead and pick it up with a DSi in a couple weeks. Sales-wise, GTA games would probably have better success on the Wii than the DS.

cain1415519d ago

It looks good to me, but not enough to buy a DS. Most handheld games don't appeal to me...

Viewtiful5519d ago

Yeah, but the truth is, and the question this article poses is: Does anybody care? Are the majority of DS players even legally ALLOWED to play Chinatown Wars?

Ocelot39975519d ago

Of course they don't like Chinatown Wars. DS is for children.

iTZKooPA5519d ago

I'd hate to get all semantics on you, but you are LEGALLY allowed to play any game, despite your age. The ratings are voluntary.

Anywho, with the ridiculous amount of DSs solid to date, I am fairly certainly that a large portion are of age. I finally got the game myself (damn snail mail) and am enjoying it something fierce. Has made me LOL a few times to boot.

italianbreadman5519d ago

I'd like to see some US charts, because at least at GameStop, it appears to be selling very well.

Rockstar needs to produce MORE on these consoles (Nintendo), not less. Then they'll see greater sales numbers for each successive title.

Sarcasm5519d ago

"but you are LEGALLY allowed to play any game, despite your age."

So why if a 12 year old tries to buy an M rated game, they won't sell it to him?

But I guess you're point is if that same 12 year old is at home playing an M rated game, it wouldn't matter.

So n/m :)

DK_Switch5519d ago

@1.7 -

"The ratings are voluntary."

Also, the enforcement of those ratings have been voluntary by each retailer so far.

Sometimes I react to sentences I read before reading the next ones too. It's ok ... it happens to all of us. :)

SinnedNogara5519d ago

@ Ocelot3397

Being in the sixth place doesn't mean it didn't sell well. Five other things just sold better.

Off Topic: Would I like to see a Wii version of GTA. Sure. Just imagine. The Wii has most of what GTA needs to be fun like:

Onine Mode
Motion Controls (melee, shoot, h^^ker banging, etc.)
Wii Speak
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay graphics.

Good article,
I guess my take on it was that it really wasnt marketed well for the ds, or at least I didn't see much for it. I think if Rockstar were to do a GTA on Wii it would fare a little better, if they play their cards right that is.

DK_Switch5519d ago

GTA has a place on every console. Frankly, I'm surprised Nintendo didn't license a GTA game sooner, and I hope they do more in the future.

As far as competing on the DS, though, it's hard for me to see GTA as a failure at #6 when it's up against the likes of Pokemon and other similarly GIGANTIC DS titles. Just the fact Chinatown Wars made the top 10 is impressive in my book.

cain1415519d ago

What I found interesting was that the PSP one sold more with a smaller install base...

shoinan5519d ago

Every game has a place on every console within reason, right?

predator5519d ago

yeah and thats basically what the article is pointing towards, GTA deserves to be played, it just doesn't seem the DS crowd are to bothered with it, which is a real shame

dragunrising5519d ago

The think that with the success of both the Wii and DS, you will see more and more games geared towards the hardcore. Chinatown should sell well, but not to the same extent of any Pokemon game. Pokemon is geared towards the much larger younger demographic...although anyone can enjoy it (I know I do). GTA games traditionally sell well for long periods. The game should have "legs" when people discover its not a watered down GTA experience. Buy it! :-)

I've got a question to the guys that have played it, is it fun?

I may pick this GTA up, but it'll still have to wait until after Echoes of Time, Disgaea and Valkyrie Profile.;)

No 6. is good in my opinion, especially considering the Square Enix games on the DS(which are pretty much all great) fail to chart in the UK, although that may be due to imports.

stewie328875519d ago

Be forewarned. Valkyrie Profile for the DS has been coming back with largely mediocre reviews.

LightofDarkness5519d ago

It is probably the best game on the DS, not counting Chrono Trigger due to it originally being released on the SNES.

SpoonyRedMage5519d ago

Hmm sounds good then, so is it funner than GTA has gone now?

I don't mind mediocre review to be honest, I've played a lot of so called "mediocre" games and really enjoyed them, I guess I just think differently to most reviewers.

I'm going to be broke in the next two weeks. Got to pay for my DSi, any downloads, the three games I mentioned(plus maybe GTA: CW) and possibly some other stuff. It's a good year for gaming anyway, especially on the DS.

ChaoticStupid5519d ago

GTA Cw is a fantastic game. Fixes a lot of the complaints with 4. Much more laid back this time. Drug running is a really good addition as is the new wanted level system. I am really amazed at just how much stuff they put into the game.

Sweet. I loved Liberty City Stories despite the city being empty. Those main story missions were tough but fun.

Both Stories games were far better than GTA 3 IMO, VCS being the best and most enjoyable though.

11 Awesome Video Games Nobody Played

scottypops2860d ago

Reckoning was AWESOME, i played the shit out of it on my PC. So fun.

Xavior_Reigns2860d ago

Absolutely! My only complaint was gathering all the armor pieces... so stupid.

RandomGamer2860d ago

I could never find a full set which was frustrating . Or by the time I did actually find one it was completely obsolete .

bouzebbal2860d ago

Fear Effect
Legend of Dragoon
Jade Cocoon
Auto Modellista
Parasite Eve

So much greatness not many played..

Kombatologist2859d ago

Parasite Eve was so awesome. I've heard great things about Fear Effect, too. Oddly enough, I have it in my collection but have never gotten around to playing it. :\

IamTylerDurden12860d ago

I wanted to like Amular, but i was disappointed with TM's artwork and the visual quality in general. It seemed like a low budget game, even though it wasn't. The decision to mimic WoW was a poor one, but combat was pretty good.

nucky642860d ago

agreed. I played the hell out of it too on my ps3

Shubhendu_Singh2859d ago

I have played KOA so much it's ridiculous. It was really good.

Though if anyone is picking it up, Please do NOT go in with completionist mentality.
The game though pretty and combat fun, is filled with way too many useless side quests...way way too many.
I think you would need more than 100hours to get across even normal side missions.

Indigon2859d ago

I played it on my PS3. It was a great game. The DLC was pretty fun too. Shame it wasn't the success it deserved to be.

XanderZane2859d ago (Edited 2859d ago )

Yeah no kidding. The controls were some of the best I've ever played. Was completely surprised at how good it was. The only downside was maybe the story. Game was still lots of fun and a sleeper hit for me. I own all the games they've listed. Didn't miss out on any of those games.

@abzdiine
i own all those games except Jade Cocoon. I also have Fear Effect 2.

bouzebbal2858d ago

Good, you are a boss in my eyes! You play the right things kid

XanderZane2857d ago

@abzdiine
Thanks. I've been playing video games since 1978 though, so no where close to being a kid. If you played Colosssus Cave text adventure back in the late 1970's, then you've been gaming a long, long time. lol!!

Yukes2859d ago

Likewise, loved Amalur for the super slick combat alone. The story was instantly forgettable though.

I remember when my friend introduced me to Shenmue II years ago. I went out and bought myself Shenmue for my Dreamcast and Shenmue II for my Xbox. Still got them to this day.

Yet another terrible article by vgpwn, it doesn't help that they are another site that makes you go through multiple pages.

Millions of people played these games, some of them have a huge following. That site is quickly becoming one of those sites i want to avoid.

Nintendo NX Wish List: 3rd-Party Launch Games

GameCrate: "We take a look at five games and franchises that would be perfect for garnering some potentially strong third-party support (which we're well aware isn't Nintendo's strong point)."

FallenAngel19843019d ago

Why do people think putting an M-rated game on Nintendo console will signal an influx of more M-rated title? We've had many M-rated games on Nintendo consoles since the N64. If third parties don't feel that it's profitable to do so in the past 20 years, I doubt they'll change their mind in the next 20 years

ninsigma3018d ago

Depends. If Nintendo are planning to create games more akin to the big games we expect from Sony or ms in tandem with their fan favourites like zelda Mario, xenoblade etc, the Console could see an influx of more users. And if the Console is like ps4 and xb1 when developing games for it, that could really push 3rd parties to include Nintendo again. It's all up in the air right now of course because we don't know anything about the Console but with previous rumours of the likes of dragon quest 11 and more coming to the nx, it's fun to speculate on other 3rd parties that would be cool to see on the new console.

FallenAngel19843018d ago

GameCube was on hardware parity with its competition, yet it didn't receive as many of the multiplats. Wii U has hardware parity with PS3 and 360, yet it still misses out on many of those multiplats.

I really don't see why this situation would change with NX.

nogoodusernamesleft3019d ago

i want cod battlefield and gta oh yeah nintendo will win console war easily with those big sellers with better graphics and fps than ps4

ninsigma3018d ago (Edited 3018d ago )

Unless the Console is developed as a next gen console, I don't really see much changing in how things are going, even if it is a bit stronger than ps4. If it's designed to compete rather than pass out then the market will remain the same. Ps4s lead is pretty much set in stone due to its mainstream popularity. Before it could even think about overtaking ps4 it needs to catch up with xb1 which, despite being severely behind ps4, is still selling very well in its own right. If the nx were a whole generations difference between ps4 and xb1 then we could see some interesting turn of events. But it would also need to work on expanding its games library and entice 3rd party devs to develope all games on ps4/xb for the nx as well.

Edit: fixed grammar

wonderfulmonkeyman3018d ago

CoD didn't sell for crap on Wii U, and it ran better than its PS3 and 360 counterparts before the PS4 and XBone launched.

If it didn't help the Wii U, chances are it won't help the NX.

Exclusives are more important than multiplats when it comes to getting the NX to sell.
That's just how it is.

No one is going to plunk down over $200 for an NX just because it has a copy of the latest CoD, when they can pay only $60 for it on a console they already own[PS4/XBone].

skydragoonityx3018d ago

The NX would probably be weaker than the PS4

Ruggadagod3018d ago

It's too late bruh the PS4 took over like 80% of 8th gen home console market share. It will sell like the N64 at best. Unless they are waiting for 9th gen or something which by then will be too late. We all know Nintendo doesn't care about 3rd party. The consoles they create are for their benefit and only their benefit. They do not go to other companies and ask what they may need/want in a console so they can grow and thrive. They are stubborn and do not improve their consoles. They do not live or die on 3rd party and thus are on a one man island.

Sadly to say, but when it comes to Nintendo home consoles, they are almost irrelevant to the average person. Yes the wii Nintendo's best selling console was relevant, but I honestly think it was just a fluke.

Unless Playstation stops getting lots Japanese games I like each gen, then I'll stick with them.

Ck1x3018d ago

I just love mathematicians on N4G! So the PS4 has taken like 80% of the 8th gen market share you say. Does that mean there's only 20% left of what the PS4 has currently sold available to these consoles to sell?

JunMei3018d ago (Edited 3018d ago )

Nintendo needs to bring in more struggling developers in Japan who are still obsessed with Sony, who isn't selling well over there, which is exacerbating their struggles further. Might be able to sell more NXs if it becomes THE place for Japanese niche titles.
