Silent Hill PS1 on PSN: is it really worth buying?

On Thursday the orginal Silent Hill (1999) was re-released on Playstation Network (PAL only). The cult classic survival horror game playable on both PS3 & PSP and costing only £3.99 looks like a definitive must-buy for veterans and younger gamers alike. Everyone loves Silent Hill! But is it really worth buying? I downloaded the game at once to check how it holds after 10 years.

Yes, this is it :) Though, it isn't a real remake, just a port of the original game. Wii version was rumoured too, but apparently Silent Hill made only to Playstation Network.

Silent Hill 1 is the best Silent Hill imo, so if there was one worth buying, it's this one.

I heard SH2 was the best. I personally was more of a RE guy and never really got into SH. Today the tables have turned and I've been more interested in SH but I can't find myself playing old games. There are way too many annoying quirks that annoys the crap out of me. Like controls for one and graphics as second. Think the only game I've been able to play was MGS1, which actually still blows my mind as far as story and bosses goes.

hell you only see love when square enix refurbish the same chrono trigger game on ds , with pretty minor changes , at full retail price

Sure the graphics might look a bit dated by today's standards, but I think in the case of what the game does, it actually adds to the charm. Especially when the town morphs into hell, and everything looks really gritty and bloody.

SH is a classic that anyone who is a fan of survival horror games owes it to themselves to play. It's got the best soundtrack, and the darkest, most mature story in a survival horror game -- two things that are perfect for the genre. Plus, some of the locales, like the Hospital and the Sewers are f'in SCARY.

This game is not about graphics. It was not a pretty game even when it launched on PSX. How can you complain about graphics when the graphics was actually the least important thing in the game?

It's awful. The only way to find anything is search by title. The tabs are completely different than the US store and make no sense.

is it clear HD with no jaggys or is it grainy and blurry like the original games and dos it have interpolation to smooth textures like in emulators? Im thinking of downloading crash 2 and sympathy of the night but I own the originals anyway.

I have the entire RE series (main games) and the entire SH series (all ps2/ps1/ps3 release(s))

I'm glad people who didn't get to snatch this up, during 1999 and before Gamestop dumped all the used PS1 games, get to do so now!

If this is enhanced in any way, I could see myself cave in, as I have funds allocated in "my wallet" for such time(s) when they arrive.

I hope they troubleshoot the hell out of it before they release it on PSN.I actually purchased the PS1 game on Amazon for less than $50,barely used & in great condition, about a month ago. I was all hyped up to play it.I started playing it & got sucked into the beginning of the story. When I got ahold of the handgun & fired it an annoying buzzing/screeching sound (kinda like a "feedback" noise from a mic)started blaring & it would not go away until I pressed start to go into the menu & had to unequip & then re-equip the handgun. This occurred everytime I fired the handgun. I stopped playing because I couldn't stand that annoying sound & I tried it on my PSone & it worked fine.I wonder how many other PS1 games the PS3 has issues with. I'm too lazy to test all of them,lol. I have the PS3 80Gb/MGS4 Bundle btw.

In order to get by that you can go into the menu screen and go to options, go to sound and change it to stereo if on mono and vice-versa.

It clears up till you restart the game, I'm positive, however it has been a couple of months.

P.S: I doubt they would DARE release it as it is, on disc, if this sound annoyance came with it..

I bought it because i love Silent Hill series but it's damn hard. Not the game itself, but the quite rigid gameplay. As always there is that "But how the F- am i supposed to go over there?" but the biggest challenge is the fightings. The character is very slow and some mobs are quicker than you, so you can't evade them.

But it's still a great game, and i see now the analogies between the game and the movie. Christopher Gans made a great job for sure.
