Eurogamer Retrospective: Dark Forces

Eurogamer went back to Dark Forces with two things in mind. First, to see if it could still give them vertigo. And second, to find the map of Max's head. This was intended purely as a nostalgia trip, a brief look at an antiquated shooter that they had once loved. What they had forgotten was that it's really, really good.

Played this a lot on PS1 as a kid, great to see another 90s boomer shooter being brought back by Nightdive!

16bitNutrition242d ago

Boomer shooter is a retarded take on calssic FPS, boomers were in the 50's, not 90's.

BrainSyphoned242d ago

It released in the early 90s so boomers were in their 30 to 50s and were the ones buying these games for their genX kids. A retarded take would be saying someone born the year a game releases is the target audience.

16bitNutrition241d ago

@Brain, more like in their 50's onwards, gaming wasn't anywhere near as popular then as it is now, so the majority of people playing those games would have been Gen X.

Boomer shooter is retarded.

NoFanBoy241d ago

1960's as in Babyboomers.

16bitNutrition241d ago

@NoFan I know what a baby boomer is, the fact that shooters from the 90's are called boomer shooters is retarded.

CrashMania241d ago

okay? not sure why you seem so pressed about the term boomer shooter, it's often used to describe shooters in that style from the 90s as I'm sure you're aware, being among the first iteration of more mainstream FPS games, don't see the need to get so worked up over it lol.

Christopher241d ago

Boomer shooter is a reference to boom sticks, not the era of people.

Boomer-shooter = Non-job-having, live-at-home, youtube-content-making, man-cave dwelling loser’s attempt to coin a term for classic and 90’s era FPS.

If you are calling old FPS Boomer-shooters, #1 you suck for being influenced by a ‘‘was never cool, grown-ass-man and cringe-inducing gaming edge-lord’. (This is correctable, there is still time!). #2 you need to get off youtube, watching middle aged men with no direction in life who make videos about games and their gaming “lifestyle” (aka no future).

Be a gamer, be smart and don’t follow lame ducks who swing Steven Segal levels of made up shit in attempt to be cool to a tween audience.

would love a remaster of the sequel too.

Shane Kim242d ago

They should remake the entire Kyle Katarn saga imo.

Think Frostbite does a much better job rendering Star Wars title, despite how flexible UE4 is, the GI solution in Frostbite is one of the best in the industry, not to mention its rendering for materials is next to the best in the industry

Nodoze2267d ago

THIS is what we need! Take the exclusive license away from EA (who have no idea how to properly manage an IP like Star Wars).

How good was this back in the day. So much fun.

Man that game was a lot of fun. I will go play it again

If interested, there is an emulator I've found that tries to modernize dark forces a bit (not gameplay wise, just prettier and more fluid controls) called XL Engine. Tries to do a few other games, too, and I don't know how often it updates but it's worth looking at.

xlengine dot com is where you can find it. Have fun :)

Such a good game! The diogna on I think the 3rd mission always scared the crap out of me!
The Krayt dragons were tough too.

I remember my brother and I were making a mod for this game because my mom didn't like the fact you had guns and would shoot people. (Even tho it was Star Wars)

We were making it so the enemies were different types of monkeys and apes.... and there were several fruit themed weapons.
Like for example the default Bryar pistol was a Banana that you would squeeze at the Monkeys and shoot out a peeled banana shot to "feed" the monkeys instead of killing people.

The thermal detonators were apples that would "make applesauce explosions" and we even made a squish sound using sound forge to record and edit our voices with a cheap 5 dollar mic.

We made the proximity mines be a cut open melon that would feed monkeys when they got near.

We were like 8 and 9 years old and were making our first mods on such a non violent game.

It's crazy how much AND how little things change as you get older.

X-wing vs Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault 2, Jedi Knight, this game, and Rogue squadron were the best thing ever growing up.

So many memories playing star wars games.

I remember when this first came out for PC. I purchased the PSone Classic version a few years back.
