IGN Resistance: Retribution Review

There's no sense in beating around the bush -- Resistance: Retribution is excellent. It's got a main character you'll connect with, an engaging single-player campaign, a crapload of unlockables, PS3 connectivity and the strongest online multiplayer I have ever seen in a PSP game. In short, you're an idiot if you don't buy this game.

I thought the game was really good but was let down by the controls, however they did a good job with the auto aim and lock on. I still think i would of been so much better if the psp had dual analogue sticks. And yes iknow you can use the PS3 controller but it defeats the purpose of a playstation portable...

Actually I've found a lot of UK sites are critical of video games for some reason. Maybe it's because they try to nitpick extra hard, in an attempt to find some "flaw" that no other reviewer has really worried about?

I know EDGE is simply full of sh1t so I don't even pay them any mind. They can masturbate over their thesauruses and their inflated egos all they want; it doesn't change the fact that most of their reviews are solely provided as an attention-garnering tactic, to show how "elite" they can make themselves look.

On the other hand, I'm glad that reviewers over there aren't all keen on just handing out 9's left and right. Some of the things they find wrong in games are questionable, but at least we can see they put more thought into their reviews, regardless of if we agree with the score.

You know, it has something to do with english people being cheep and all, they expect more from the games they paid their precious money for, but I like the results, it's better than going too easy in your reviews that your whole reviewing process becomes useless(I'm looking at you Play magazine).

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with wanting everything out of something that you paid your hard-earned money for. But sometimes the minutiae of the nature of any game takes a front-stage presence over the general package that you get when you play them. Some people let the fact they are able to let their voice be heard go to their heads, and get carried away with what they think is "wrong" or "flawed".

Well it makes no sense - since the UK is the second biggest video games market - we buy more games than most countries put together.

unless tthe publisher/developer are from the UK. check scores for ALL games from uk devs. They tend to be higher the the average scores. Check out Edge and Eurogamers scores for their neighbours' codemasters games. Media Molecule got some uk loving too so i wouldnt say they're too console specific in their bias but I knew the latest codemasters game would score higher than killzone 2 from edge long before it happened.... why... you fill in the blanks. Ive pretty much lost faith in most of the western media with their double standards, payoffs and incentives. Tomorrow never dies, manipulate the people and you win

Imo reviewers should also take on consideration the other rivaling games for psp when thinking scores to games like these. Theres not many good ones for this genre. Maybe Syphon filther series but even that differs quite much from R:retribution.

The demo was good, and from the looks of critics its a stable 8/10 relase or so.
(Edge can go to hell all that I care, their "oppinnions" differ way too much with mine so I stopped caring after the R2 review.)

This game DOES look good though, and the best part is you can hook your DualShock up to the PSP and play it like a regular console game. What other handheld title can you think of that allows you to treat it as a game that you wouldn't find out of place on your home entertainment system?

A review is simply an opinion of the person who played it. Greg really liked the game, gave it the 9.2. Some other people might not like it as much, and score it accordingly.

The UK IGN gave 50 Cent's new game a higher score than his native US IGN reviewers did, it ebbs and flows. I'd know, IGN is one of my more trusted review sites online. You should read a Jeffrey Haynes review, Haze "bombed" in most reviewers eyes, but he gave it that horrid 4.5, whereas most other reviewers gave it like 5's and 6's....Jeff Haynes is harsh, and he's on the US IGN team. That reminds me of the other blanket statements I keep seeing here about the US. Not all Americans are pompous, foolish idiots who drone on about elitist mindsets, so please no blanket statements. (ie: I don't really care for Halo, LOVE my PS3 and other cultures, etc... we're not all like the fantards that you see spouting nonsense on this site)

Well, if you don't own a PSP, then I suppose that can apply to you as well. Despite the relative "shortage" of titles as of late, the PSP is still a great handheld that ANY gamer should feel happy about having in their game system collection.

You can say what you want, EDGE most of the times is spot on with their review at least in the text, sometimes the score comes out a bit harsh.

I was reading through the March issue with the reviews from Killzone 2, Halo Wars etc.

The text about KZ2 is spot on, although the final score 7 out of 10 might not reflect that entirely. I would have expected an 8 out of 10. Although I can understand how they came to that mark, they have certain factors that weigh more then others. As originality, not too fishy stuff within gameplay etc. If you strip down KZ2 its not so much more then graphics, good death animations and enemy pretty smart AI. The story is exchangable with any other shooter, as are the characters, as are the environments etc etc.

Will check the review from Resistance for the PSP to see what they have to say

Yes I have played and I am playing KZ2. You know what describes it at best? KZ2 has no soul. Like COD4 has, like Gears has. Its just a combination of factors that makes it missing that special something.

I lost a bit interest after the bridge in the building/hall though put it down some days ago and haven't picked it up yet again. The fight under the bridge was allright taking the big gun with seat and spitting those bullets as fire on the Helghast though.

Overall it doesn't pull one in the story like Gears does. Heck, even a total different genre, like LittleBigPlanet does surprise you with every next level. KZ2 is just a game that gives a lot of enemies...

1. It is a reaction on the comments that EDGE gives low scores sometimes. Were I defend a game like KZ2 or Resistance saying that the score often doesn't reflect their reviewtext were you would expect a bit higher score. Thus actually saying for example KZ2 I would say 8 out of 10 would fit it more in EDGE instead of a 7.

2. Its MY opinion. If someone doesn't like it, one can react or think otherwise. Go read up the definition of a fascist. That title belongs to some PS3 fantards on this website if you read their latest comments, like Graphic Whore's for example.

That comment is completely irrelevant, unless you're trying to taint IGN's review. There are no comments above you mentioning Edge.

By criticising you, does not mean I condone "PS3 fanboys." Most of the time I feel they are just little children who don't know any better - they come off as insane. However, you often sound too intelligent for your own good - and it comes across as having an agenda - even though I know you own a PS3. Why mention Killzone 2 or Gears of War in a PSP game review thread?

Off-Topic: As for Killzone 2 surprising with different environments/levels - get past level 5 and you'll be surprised one after another. That's what elevated the game for me.

They are overly critical of PS3 games for some reason... against the views of most reviewers. Like you, I think their review text is quite accurate. They praised KZ2's multiplayer no end - many other things like the action, the graphics were all praised - so the score seemed a little unwarranted. They even said that the controls were tight. They criticised the story - which is fair. Though I don't think it should be the focus - nobody's expecing a great story in an FPS. Even those games with "fantastic" stories are pretty weak by the standards of any other medium (TV, film, literature etc.).

My other point is that you should stop spinning everything Mart. You've only mentioned the negatives of KZ2. You say that Edge's review was accurate, and that it should have given an 8/10 to KZ2 - so you obviously LIKE the game, but that doesn't come across - you're just trolling to get a rise out of some people. Give your opinion with slightly less anti-sony spin and maybe you won't get attacked so much.

I really don't see how an FPS on a PSP is going to be any good. Don't get me wrong, I've got a PSP, but I haven't touched it in ages, since god of war and star wars the force unleashed came out. (I still think the PSP's version of SW:TFU is better than the console versions) And I tried coded arms last time, which wasn't really good to me either...

R1 is a good game, I wouldn't give it a 9/10 but it deserves an solid 8. One thing that is missing in R1 is those awesome boss fights, like the Leviathan in Chicago.

Sony Bend gave us two of the best controlled PSP games out there (Dark Mirror, Logans Shadow). If the controls are as good as the previously mentioned two, this game is sure to be awesome.

Finally a reason to use my PSP other than connecting to my PS3. I do like the PS3 controller option, but it seems that you have to have R2 to use it. Being that I am pretty used to Syphon Filter though it shouldn't be a problem.
