Killzone 2 versus Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

GamesOnSmash gives an opinionated comparison of the two heavy weights of first person shooters. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the undisputed champion of first person shooters and Killzone 2 the up and coming challenger. Let's do this.

I think its simple to see that KZ2 dwarfs COD4 in every possible way. The multiplayer is beyond what COD4 has done, badge mixing, turrets, ammo crates. It just creates a more co-op success than noob spray and praying or camp-a-thons. If you have a good squad, your'e unstopable.

COD4 had a better SP though. KZ2's SP blew. But the online made up for it beyond anything I've played.

Killzone 2 had a great single player campaign, cod4 was 5 hours of enemies coming at you without any ai. Nobody I know even liked cod4s sp, but everyone I know loves both multiplayer offerings.

I totally agree. I really love the BOTS in KZ2 and being able to play Offline.

The BOTS in Killzone 2 are REALLY good and at times it feels like you're playing against a real human player because the enemy A.I. in KZ2 is just crazy.

I though both COD 4 and KZ2 single player were similar, both quite short, had their moments, and were decent. But sorry, KZ2 lags behind COD 4 on multiplayer easily. Not saying KZ 2 isn't fun because it is, but after a few hours I just don't have the same feeling of playing again like I did with COD 4.

KZ 2 is an excellent game, but just isn't that system seller Sony was hoping for. Oh well, there is always next year when GOW 3 and GT 5 comes out.

I still think Call of Duty 4's multiplayer was better. Although I was very impressed with Killzone 2, and might even rate it my second favorite shooter. They are both deep multiplayer experiences in their own way, and both should be praised as such. Besides, you cant really compare a slow more strategical shooter like Killzone 2 to an arcadey fast paced game like CoD4. Both are fun as hell, and probably the best fps multiplayer experiences one can have this gen, I really see no reason why one should be obviously better than the other as most people on this site suggest.

COD4 had a very memorable single player. Epic dialogue and events that keep you gripping to your controller. Who doesn't remember the sniper shot? Yes KZ2 keeps things going a lot more and there are more things you end up doing, COD4 shouldn't be downplayed at all. One thing that really kills me though (with every COD game) is the Mystery Machine that poops out soldiers unless you push forward. Yes there is more action, but more pointless frustration. They could easily make a better AI than just crank out baddies at a faster rate for higher difficulties.

That being said, I just unlocked the M4 revolver on KZ2 multiplayer..I LOVE IT!!!

And COD4 is one of my all time favorite shooters. Killzone 2's online is fantastic, no lag, HUGE maps, and constantly changing game modes make it one hell of a time. There is the problem of lack of leveling. After you get to general the only thing left to do is go after the badges and I don't know how rewording that will feel. Either way, the game is freakin fun.

What a load of rubbish! COD4 did not 'reinvent' the FPS genre! it's one hell of a quality game, the multiplayer was well refined and added a few new elements. Overall it was a well polished quality multiplayer game. Single player personally I thought it was sub par, more like a training ground to get use to the controls and feel of the game before jumping into multiplayer. The whole single player experience felt like 'stand here, shoot them' that doesn't sound much like a shooter that 'reinvented' the genre!

Don't get me wrong, it's a well polished quality game, one of the best games this generation so far!

I think both are great games. The best two FPSs out there, and both ground breaking. I think Killzone 2 has the edge with online variety, and puts COD4's prestige mode to shame (there was no point in going prestige). Adding badges and trying to unlock those and new weapons and combining them is great. But KZ2 did come out later and has had like half a decade put into it. I loved KZ1 and hope they add some more weapons for free (and make the shotgun have a shorter range) and add the Vetka maps from KZ1 also probably for a fee.

Killzone 2 and COD4 require different play styles... KZ2 is a more slower paced tactical FPS, while COD4 is a more twitchy shooter... almost anyone can probably pick up and play COD4 and love it, but I think that KZ2 isn't a game that every FPS fan can pick up and play right out of the gate.

There's been a lot of people complaining with KZ2's controls and the the slower pace of the game, but for me it's totally perfect and it feels just right.

I'm glad that KZ2 doesn't play exactly like COD4 because if it did, nothing about the game would be true to the Killzone roots (because KZ1 played similar to KZ2) and not that much about the game would be truly different if it played exactly like COD4... if KZ2 played like COD4, then it would have been criticized even more for not being different enough.

Even though KZ2 doesn't exactly revolutionize the FPS genre, it is one of the very few FPS games of it's kind this generation when it comes to a slower paced tactical realistic FPS game and that makes it stand out a little IMO, and the fact that it's the best looking console game to date makes it stand out even more.

Killzone is like a hybrid with mixtures of run and gun and tactical gameplay... depending on your play style and the game mode being played at the time....

All Killzone 2 needs now is constant developer support, more maps, more game types. The maps so far are the best I have ever played. I won't even talk about the graphics because everyone know it looks way too good. But after the control patch the game is perfect. I am COD MW2 will be great as well, but only time will tell will it be able to 1up Killzone 2.

Alright im not going to get in a stupid debate over this topic... because I like both games.....

But I will say this... no one should be trying to downplay CoD like they are.... it took what 2 years to develop? is one of the biggest selling FPS games of all time... with all platforms included......

And the fact that CoD4 runs at a solid locked 60fps..... when you think back on playing it... it didnt matter how retarded the fights got at some points... the game was butter.....and still was a graphical powerhouse.....

So that fact alone that it holds a 60fps in a FPS game... and was the best looking FPS game on the consoles for a year... is quite the feat....

Anyway... lets stop these stupid comparisons at least until Killzone is a half a year old... the game is still fresh on peoples minds and can make people hate it or love it easily... the big question will be a year from now.... will it still be captivating people online.... that is what really measures a great FPS online.

Killzone 2 however, seriously needs vehicles(jeep, tank, aircraft) and to get rid of the spawn flares. Spawn Zones are more appropriate.

Other games may have more game modes, but there is no combination of them like in Killzone 2.

Personally, I find the seamless game modes a huge plus in Killzone's favour over other games. I never feel lifted out of the action.

One thing, however, they need to change up the Search and Destroy and Search and Retrieve points. I think we're all getting to used to where they're placed, maybe have the targets cycle through a few locations. The epic wars this has created in tiny spaces is something else though, a lot of fun, but I can imagine the quick thinking required if the target suddenly isn't where it's expected.

I've found the game becomes infinitely more the fun when your level goes up and you play against good players. It really makes S/R, S/D and Assassination a lot more insane, you really can't get distracted.

I'm not really going anywhere with this, other than to say that Killzone 2 is the most fun I have had in an online game and I am still using the same weapon set up I used when I started playing online!

So, I don't think more weapons are required, but more maps, that keep the balance of the current set, would be nice as well as different points for the objectives.

I thought in some areas COD4 is better, campaign was solid multiplayer with the perks was so fresh and fun, great game.

I thought KZ2 obviously looked great but after you get used to the gameplay( and controller for me) it plays great also, the campaign takes alot from other shooters but the multiplayer is really where it shines, so the bottom line is it ends up being very good game, I think KZ2 will always be knocked for its lack of identity compared to other shooters but in the end whats important is the game is alot of fun.

the way the multiplayer in KZ2 is done, I wish the mash-up game mode that is the only one you can play... I just wish that were 1 of many game modes insted of my only option... I like the glory of it being me against everyone in death match and I NEVER play the hold your location stuff in ANY shooter games (like taking over Visari's radios in KZ2 by holding down the post, or Annex in Gears, etc.) I just never liked those modes. So being FORCED into playing a mash-up of multiple modes was a major killer of me with KZ2... hopefully the DLC due out, will bring what I've come to love in other shooters!

and I know that MORE guns/vehicles etc.. DON'T make a game better

but GRAPHICS DON'T either...

and when your spoiled with being used to having all that in MOST FPS offering on the market, to not have that at all and not even as a option... it's kind of a bummer!

This game certainly takes COD4's crown in my opinon in both campaign and MP

Campaign - obviously KZ2 kills COD4's 6 hour run, granted COD4 was more varied with the sniping missions the epic hollywood feel of KZ2's campaign will be tough to match.

Muliplayer - again i give it to KZ2 because first of all, 32 players with bots is better than 16/18 players with no bots. So already KZ2 beats COD4's MP just because it handles double the amount of players with THOSE GRAPHICS!!! But then there is the class system, which given the fact that you can mix and match the classes we've already been given, we can expect future classes via dl content!!

KZ2 is now my favorite game of all time!

Everything in KZ2's multiplayer I like better, except for search and destroy. During my COD4 days I played Hardcore S&D and really nothing can top that. The suspense of no respawn and the teamwork needed. I really wish Killzone had something more tactical. They either need to do something about spawn grenades in objective zones or implement a no respawn type gameplay...otherwise it does get boring pretty fast.

Don't get me wrong. Killzone 2 is the best FPS I've played. But the multiplayer needs more diversification when it comes to game modes.

Just my opinion. Regardless of who you are KZ2 is a gaming experience that should not be missed. All fanboyism aside, it really is awe inspiring when all things are considered. You will have extreme fanboys on both sides and the game is not perfect, better games are coming, but we will not see a FPS (or game) better than this for quite some time. God of War didn't reinvent Action/Adventure games. still was a fantastic game. it took what Devil May Cry had established, and grew on it.

Killzone 2 doesn't reinvent FPS games. it's still a fantastic game. it took what made games like COD4 and Team Fortress 2 the successes that they are, and builds upon it.

what separates Killzone 2 from COD4 and Team Fortress 2 are little changes and adjustments to the gameplay.

Killzone 2 is CONSTANTLY getting called generic, and not offering anything new to the FPS genre, but i can count on ONE hand how many FPS titles released this generation have an XP system, a Class system, and more. how can something be called "standard" when only a few games in the genre utilize those features.

Team Fortress 2 has a class system.
Resistance 2 has a class system.
Killzone 2 has a class system.

what other FPS titles released so far this generation have such a system? how is it a generic, overused system when only a few others use it?

Killzone 2 has cross class ("Badges" in the game) system.

from my memory, NO OTHER FPS title has a cross class system. or can you be a Medic/Sniper in COD4, Resistance 2, and Team Fortress 2?

isn't that something NEW to the FPS multi-player genre? i'd expect other FPS titles that feature class systems where a player can truly customize a class best suited to their play style like in Killzone 2.

Killzone 2 has a literal first person cover system. this is, to me, one of it's best, and most overlooked features. playing other FPS titles after playing KZ2 really surprised me, because i didn't realize how incredibly useful a genuine cover system in an FPS could be. i expect a lot more FPS titles to have truly first person cover systems from here on out.

Killzone 2 has an in game valor points system that allows clans to wager their valor points on matches.

Killzone 2 has bots. no, that's not anything new, but how many FPS games released this generation have allowed bots for those that don't want to play online? i know of UT3 on the PS3 and 360, but that's about it.

beyond just the fantastic visuals, Killzone 2 is an insanely polished FPS game, that elevates the genre on consoles because of it's polish. games like Halo 3: ODST, COD: MW2, and other highly anticipated FPS titles from here on out have a lot to live up to in terms of polish. it is a gritty, intense, and realistic shooter.

no, Killzone 2 is a revolution of the genre, but it is a quality FPS that ALL FPS fans should play (whether they like it or not is up to them, but they should at LEAST give it a try - i don't like the Halo franchise, but i'm going to give Halo Wars a try because i love RTS games, and i may enjoy it, despite my feelings for the particular franchise it's based on).

KZ2 is simply being hated on because it's an exclusive. that's simply undeniable fact. if this game was on the 360, with the same level of visual fidelity as the PS3 version, the media wouldn't hesitate to sing the games virtues.

considering that

A) the visuals are spectacular
B) the story is actually rather good, despite some weak voice acting in some parts (the same can be said for Gears of War, Halo, and COD4)
C) the gameplay is responsive, rock solid, and intense. exactly what you want a shooter to be.
D) the multi-player is robust, with an addictive level and class system, and the incredible Warzone mode, which has game modes segueing into one another without needing to constantly go out into the lobby.

there is no reason why people should hate on this game the way they do. it's simply sour grapes due to the media being so horribly WRONG about Killzone 2 being able to pull off it's lofty ambitions. the skeptics and doubters are simply too prideful to admit that GG pulled it off. the game is brilliant, despite it's lack of 100% originality and new features oozing out of it's pores. the game delivers what it set out to deliver: a visceral, intense, and overall FUN first person shooter.

I continue to find enjoyment in this comment section, because it seems that very few people can just enjoy both games. Everyone always has to enjoy something more than something else, and it's kinda sad. I play COD4, COD:WAW, alongside of Killzone 2, and get this... I enjoy them all. Why? It's because I'm not short sited like many of the people out there, who must label something the best or only play/like one system. Do yourself a favor if you're like that, and just lighten up. You might have fun with your games a bit more.

Will Killzone be as resonant as the CoD series remains to be seen. Some of you here seem to really enjoy it so that should serve as satisfaction enough.

It looks like I am in the minority here but I think CoD 4 is an all around better game. From the moment I first picked it up I knew it would be one of my favorite games of this generation. I have been having a blast with it ever since it released.

Yes I haven't played it in awhile but it is a game I don't think I will ever get rid of until modern warfare 2 comes out. Killzone on the other hand after unlocking all the classes I feel as if I have no other reason to own this game as I find playing it online to be quit boring.

However, the online gameplay and victory becomes very predictable with a tactician that knows how to use the spawn flare....and one who doesn't.

It's longevity is in serious doubt.

Removing the spawn flare from the game forces team to truly fight their way to victory rather than a Tactician planting a spawn flare at a exact location to destroy/defend/retrieve or to launch attacks at the target or body count.

Very predictable.

The Spawn Flare is truly a hindrance to the games longevity if you have played Killzone 2 enough and understand the fundamentals to winning games.

BTW. MW2 will totally kick butts as the best shooter this year. Mark my words. IW are not noobs.

So many comments to respond, but I chose this one because its the most absurd. If you think the errors in COD4 don't exist, you definately give fanboyism a new meaning. All games have their issues online and Killzone 2 has its own, but nowhere near COD4. If COD4 online is your dreams I would hate to have your nightmares.

I think CoD4 is a really great game. The campaig was forgettable except for the part where that bomb was blown and your helicopter went down.
The multiplayer was great but it was too arcady and run and gun. I don't like it. I want to feel that I'm in a battlefield.

I haven't played KZ2 more than the demo since I haven't bought it yet (but Im getting it tomorrow) however, the demo blew my head off and I played it like 50 times. If only the demo did that I can only imagine what the full game will be.

First of how can you compare 2 different types of shooters, your a retard in the first place.everyone hates on killzone 2 because you cant snipe somebody across the map with a p90.cod waw was fun dont get me wrong. but it was to easy, and thats why people liked it they felt good at a game.

IMO is pretty easy. Camp it out, grab 5+ kills in a row, use the carpet bomb/helicopter combo and before you know it, you're number 1! KZ2 on the other hand, you gotta WORK for it. Work HARD! And even if you obtain number 1, doesn't mean you'll win the match. Stupid aerial support ribbon is hard to obtain. Stupid, weak bots, LOL!

Before the patch I would of said COD4 all the way. But now that they fixed the dead zone accel issue with the controls I just love KZ2. I am a rifleman @ heart and the controls before just lead to a big cluster*** of terrible CQB. Now you can stand off if needed a pick off ememies due to the better aming. Even the Shotty is better. May not have the auto aim bu now you don't need it

Played both, prefer COD 4. I mainly am a campaign first guy and COD 4 wins here for a number of reasons. One of them is that since it is closer to today (came out in 2007 but based in 2009) it to me helps the realism facto since we are not invading another planet. Also, it threw the curve ball of the nuke explosion and who didnt go WTF when you are crawling in the chopper and just as you look out over the destruction, you die. Also, the heavy brething and the heart beat (good use of rumble) during that scene is intense. Only thing that I at first hated was the flashback scene. I died too many times when crawling through the field in full camo while trying to avoid a patrol. Talk about a tense moment in a game.

Anyway, both games are great and yes, graphics are going to go to KZ but overall, I gottta go with COD 4 and am hyped as hell for MW2.

I do not like teammates. Thats my only gripe with KZ2.
Hopefully an update will give gamers the option.

I mean I love the kickbacks/recoil on all weapons. Graphics and light blew me away. I am still observing the environment in all maps. Its freakin gorgeous.
