TGR: Madworld Hands-On Preview "An Amusement Park of Pain"

"When you think of the Wii, you don't normally conjure up images of poles being jammed down people's throats or chainsaws ripping through torsos. Enter MadWorld, the first game to be released by Platinum Games, which is a studio made up of former Devil May Cry, Okami and Viewtiful Joe developers. MadWorld brings a bit of the old ultra-violence to Nintendo's kid-friendly console, and hardcore gamers who have been waiting for the next big adult title since No More Heroes need to look no further."

Honestly? I think this game will probably disappoint most. Once they finally play it, most people will be brought back down to earth finding out that it's still just a beatemup brawler no matter how bloody its aesthetics are.

Wow...did I just agree with Viewtiful about something videogame related? Weird.

Seriously, the comparisons to No More Heroes are disappointing, because I felt that game had little to offer in terms of actually enjoyable gameplay. I was hoping MadWorld would have some sort of greater depth to its combat.

"most people will be brought back down to earth finding out that it's still just a beatemup brawler"

I'm not certain I follow. Why would people be disappointed about that? Obviously, they're not for everyone, but speaking from a historic and contemporary standpoint, Beat'em ups comprise one of the most successful and popular genres in all of gaming.

Sega has quite a line-up this quarter. Can't wait for this one. Nothing wrong with a solid beat-em-up.

I think it has the potential to be something special, but they really have to pump it full of variety to keep it interesting, ala No More Heroes

Platinum Games has some ridiculous talent, I'm confident they'll do what they need to with it.

Platinum Games impressed me a ton at E3 last year...

I referenced a lancer from Gears of War in something I wrote a couple weeks ago, 'cause I was talking about a chainsaw, and a friend of mine told me the reference was outdated now that Mad World was coming.

He was wrong, but Mad World still looks cool.
