Most certainly Square-Enix isn't the top dog that they used to be. A fair share of top tier games still come from the East, but I think American has become a progressively more FPS oriented culture. Which fits us since we're a bunch of gun toting red necks, right?

evrfighter5559d ago

so true lol. I often had to hear over vent from my r6 raven shield uk buddies how americans were gun crazy barbarians. Thinking about it even my JP buddies from ffxi told me once that they couldn't understand how the people were allowed to carry firearms. Though I'm not surprised shooting games dominate the states.

The recent rise of Rpg's made outside of japan have shown how stuck in the past Jrpg's are.

And the truth is, Jrpg's have been the same for years, but gamers were so used to it that it didn't matter. But newer games, now have people frowning on what they used to love so much.

The quality didn't get worse, you are just able to see it for it's truth. These are the same games we have been getting since the NES. The only difference is the graphics have gotten better and they changed a few things around. It's a shame it took gamers so long to realize this. But you know the fanboy will say it has something to do with the 360.

Personally I've always prefered Bioware and Bethesda style RPG's to turn based.

Square has always been great though for Turnbased ones...

agreed I just played Mass Effect for the pc and seriously it was the first rpg I enjoyed since final fantasy X.

I just played The Last Remnant demo over steam the other day. It's like time has stood still for the JP dev's. There's definately been an evolution in western based rpg's compared to the games we saw 10 years ago.

I think Japans inability to embrace and learn from Western technology and Western game design has effectively hurt their software and hardware products.

They've failed to create products the Western way while still maintaining their identity, and this is largely why companies such as Square and Sony are no longer the King in their respective businesses.Sony will officially be run like a Western company once Ryoji Chubachi steps down on April 1st-in other words, the Playstation business will officially be run like a modern videogame business needs to be run these days.

Are Square smart enough to shift positions and hire a Western man to handle their company?Sadly, the answer is no,which is why Final Fantasy 13 reviewing averagely will be the downfall of the company.

It's a good thing they've got strong ties with Microsoft, gonna need some of that Windows money to bail them out.

JRPGs are terrible. American RPGs evolved the formula but Japan apparently wants to continue playing the same game over and over instead of evolving the medium.

SirLarr5559d ago

I agree. I think they feel that they have to keep appealing to the niche market that demands the same JRPG mainstays, while there are much bigger and more profitable markets that want something new and better.

cain1415559d ago

JRPGs always seemed to involve grinding to level just for the sake of extending the length... I really don't have time to just constantly fight the same people over and over...

I would agree that in terms of RPGs the East just isn't hitting with the power it used to. That said, I'm not sure if its because they haven't evolved or if they simply haven't been putting out games of a high enough quality to compete. There is still a niche out there (which includes myself)that enjoys well made turn based games. The problem is that for the most part the recent releases in that category have been largely mediocre. Look at the last year for Squarenix. They've released a ton of non FF games, and they have all been lackluster.

Some of it is an unwillingness to adapt to new and western trends, but that isn't all of it. I mean, look at Atlus. Granted they aren't the size of SE, but they've managed a modicum of success by aiming at niche audience looking for older styled games that utilize new tech to make the play experience smoother and more fun.

PlayStation Plus is a secret paradise for RPG fans

From games that digitaltrends DeAngelo Epps has always wanted to play but missed out on, like Odin Sphere, to newer titles that he'd love to re-experience like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, there was enough there to justify diving back in. And those titles aren’t even a small percent of what’s available here. Vanillaware titles, Square Enix games, NIS franchises he’d never even heard of — there’s a whole lot to dig into.

PSPlus is Amazing for RPGs and NIS America, Square Enix and Vanillaware games are perfect for PSPortal.

LG_Fox_Brazil175d ago

Not really a 'secret' but a paradise indeed, I just finished Soul Hackers 2, pretty good, and started Labyrinth of Galleria and I am having a blast. Tons of great RPGs in the PS4/PS5 family

Mr_cheese175d ago

Secret is the click buzzword. Can't have a title without bait these days.

secret, shadow, hidden

Perfect for playing on the Portal, since rpgs can be such timesinks. For those people who can't stay glued to the TV, it's good to give some freedom around the house, out on the porch or whatever. I haven't picked up a Portal yet, bc of life priorities, but I definitely anticipate picking one up asap and playing more rpgs!

I'm currently playing Final Fantasy VII:Remake for the first time on PS5 and I am freaking blown away by this game so far. I don't know why I waited this long or due to my huge backlog but had to be honest, this game exceeded my expectations.

OtterX175d ago

Yea, story pacing aside, the combat system is pretty killer, especially if you slow it down to play it more like a tactical turned based jrpg!

I actually wish FF16 had gone this route, instead of the DMC route. The FF7:R system gave enough action for those who wanted to play that way, while still appeasing us old school turn based jrpg fans.

Glad you're enjoying!

crazyCoconuts175d ago

Some of the best in game HDR I've ever seen in that game. I liked it a lot too. My first final fantasy game believe it or not

A beginner's guide to Star Ocean

Star Ocean is one of those series that did, and still does, things that others don’t. Think of it as a JRPG for fans of series like Star Trek. The casts regularly involve people from more advanced civilizations getting involved with those who are still growing, even though there are various measures in place to allegedly stop that sort of interference. As a result, people get energy weapons, cyborgs, magic and people who can turn into cats. It is a lot to take in.

Let's see here. There was another classic JRPG series that started this SCI Fi. It was Phantasy Star by Sega. Before Star Ocean, there was Phantasy Star 1-4 on Sega consoles

a beginners guide to star ocean....after playing the 3rd game
you've been told that the universe (SO lore) is just a ------------------- and close the book

VsAssassin1631d ago

Yeah, that plot twist didn't work for me. I wish SO3 isn't canon, but it is. Anyway, SE can just sweep SO3 under the rug perhaps by soft rebooting the franchise.

Nerdmaster1632d ago

The first two were so great, among the top RPGs on 16 and 32-bit era. I wonder why it went downhill after that...

LiViNgLeGaCY1631d ago

I still regard the 2nd Story as one of the greatest JRPG's of all time.

ChronoJoe1632d ago

Play the PS1 game and then the PS2 game and then the rest probably aren't worth your time unless you're a superfan of the series. I think that's all you need to know.
