Syphon Filter 5 The New Metal Gear Solid 4?

Blend Games writes:

"Given that Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patriots was the last game featuring Snake Solid, gamers are going to need a new icon for stealth and spy-action on the PS3. And since Ubisoft won't share Same Fisher from Splinter Cell: Conviction with PS3 gamers, Sony is going to need to redefine how gamers experience stealth-action for the PlayStation 3. So why not Syhon Filter 5?"

Please don't release any more good games on the PS3,I only own an Xbox 360 and it's torture seeing all these awesome games being released only for the PS3.

Any more positive news for the PS3 and the gaming media will have a cow!!!

@ Blur

Oh What a Zinger that Was! Where did you learn that from? Probably The other night when you were alone in your grand parents attic, with the door locked, Je*rking off while listening to The Jonas Brothers.

Oh you mean just like the how the superior visuals for Killzone 2 was once said to be a rumor, right? Well that certainly is a reality. Keep one thumb in your a$$ and one thumb in your mouth and keep telling yourself all day and everyday that it isn't real. Whatever keeps you going, little one.

I doubt it. Syphon filter protagonist is more of a poor man's James bond. He isn't hard core like Snake. But i still loved the games

LarVanian5567d ago

Gabe Logan is much more similar to Ethan Hunt than James Bond.

UnSelf5567d ago

tbe reason why i was introduced to the metal gear series so late (i entered at MGS2), is cuz of Syphon. I was so in love wit its installments, and me and my bros used to laugh at metal gear's gameplay when compared to Syphon's.

I shouldve been the one gettin laughed at. MGS4 is insurmountable

GWAVE5567d ago

Logan reminds me of Nathan Drake, actually. I didn't care for the console Siphon Filter games but the PSP games were fantastic. My main gripe is that the characters and game world are rather boilerplate, especially in comparison to MGS4. Actually, I'd say that applies to almost any non-MGS stealth genre. Call me an MGS fanboy, but it's difficult for me to see the charm of Sam Fisher fighting generic Columbian guerrillas when I can see a cybernetic ninja team up with a war-torn clone to fight a 10-story tall mecha. :P

thor5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

Hmm that's strange. Because I actually think that MGS2's core gameplay beats MGS4's. I'll give some reasons as to why the stealth is better:

-It's more like a puzzle. How do I get from this end of the room to the other?
-Snake/raiden actually flattens against walls rather than hovers 2 feet away.
-It's very clean and clinical - knock on the wall, enemy comes round to find you, you cartwheel out of the way, hold up another enemy, move on.
-VR training captures the very essence of the game and is awesome
-Checkpoints are close together - each area is just a room. A HUGE irritation of mine in stealth games is when you can't save when you want and the checkpoints are really far apart. (This is why I loved Thief 1/2 but hated 3, and why I hate Splinter Cell). In MGS2 you just restart that area - in other games like MGS4 you have to restart the WHOLE area again which is huge. Because stealth games require patience, I run out because whilst a particular part is easy, I have to do it again and I have to wait for ages whilst doing so.
-MGS2 offered a better selection of difficulty levels. European Extreme FTW.
-The punishment for getting spotted in MGS2 was to have a load of guys come and hunt you down - you needed to hide or shoot your way out with great difficulty. In MGS4, if you just shoot the guy who saw you, you'll get away scot-free, the backup is pitiful and you can easily take them out.
-The drebin point system is hugely imbalanced and flawed. Who needs 60 weapons with practically infinite ammo for each one? On-site procurement was MUCH better and you had other dynamics like having to conserve ammo, not having a silencer etc.
-Boss battles are WAAAAY better in MGS2. MGS4's bosses are weak and barely attack you. It's just frustrating. In MGS2 they attacked you with proper attacks that you needed to dodge and block. In MGS4 they LOSE you and then fire off some weak shot which misses you entirely or gets soaked up by your 15 rations. Of course there are a couple of boss battles in MGS4 which are awesome but I'm talking about the first 4 bosses.

Every PS3 exclusive is the second coming of Christ.

UnSelf5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

the funniest thing about all dis is, i thought i was the only person alive that thought MGS2 was betta than MGS4. I hear 3 is great also, but i never got into it.

While i agree 2 had its moments, there is sumthing about 4's "do whatever u can, its up to u" stragety that i LOVEEEEE. in 2, u were forced to be sneaky ala Splinter Cell. Though this was done exceptionally well, i wouldve been grealy disappointed if they only offered this same route in 4.

Part of 4's bliss is that u naturally wanna be sneaky....but at times u just cant becuz theres a full scale war goin on....and u have the arsenal to become a part of it if u want.

Though the boss fights in 4 was relatively easier, they still gave me a push and rush after i completed them, basically i was satisfied as i was in 2. (Cryin Wolf being the best one)

Now as im typin this im realizing that i must retract my original statement. 4 is actually >'er then 2.

The pure notion that ur able to basically "get here by w/e means" is why i love that game so much. Im not knockin 2 at all, i seriously place part 2 over 3,1, twin snakes, and 4 (up until now).....but 4 has so much replay value, it can potentially be a new, diferent game every time u play it .

Im not goin to get into the storylines, cuz to me, idc how much i get ripped on....4's story was jaw droppin, but 2's was just on another planet.............really

EXCLUSIVEGAMER5566d ago

LOL.
ALL DISC BASED MGS games are better than anything else developed in that genre.

gameplay, style, delivery.

This is a very simple list to complete. There are no collectibles. Most of everything here is story related with a couple miscellaneous Trophies thrown in. Nothing here can be missed as there is a really helpful rewind feature as well as mission select.

The Battle for Backwards Compatibility: PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X|S

A new battleground is heating up in the modern era: backwards compatibility. Sony and Microsoft have different angles, but which is better?

Eonjay721d ago

These are different companies with different eco systems. They will pick the approach that best suits them and the games in their catalog which are also vastly different.

Silly gameAr721d ago

Nothing will ever be as good as the phat PS3 model. Since sites like to compare things all the time, compare the older systems to the newer systems when it comes to BC. I'm sure you'll find the newer systems lacking.

lonewolf10720d ago

Shame they removed the hardware emulation pretty rapidly from the PS3.

Eidolon720d ago

Wasn't it at revision one? lol

720d ago
Silly gameAr720d ago (Edited 720d ago )

Had to get those cost down to make it cheaper. Since people weren't too into BC back then, that was the first to go. Shame indeed.

3 gens of playstation games, and you could use your PS1 and PS2 disk. No limited emulation. The PS3 was ahead of it's time. The way people LOVE BC today, the PS3 would have killed in 2022.

Orchard719d ago (Edited 719d ago )

@Silly It wasn’t that people weren’t into back compat, it’s that they weren’t into $599 consoles that arrived a year later than and ran a lot of games worse than the cheaper competitor console.

Price is always #1.

Unfortunately I've only got the slim I do really want to find a far model

Eidolon720d ago

Just get a PS2............ Maybe if you're collecting, though.

Eidolon720d ago (Edited 720d ago )

The Phat models, especially the original were prone to overheating, no way at this time you could get one where you could use it for PS2 AND heavy PS3 gaming(which would cause it to malfunction at some point).. It's just a novelty now. So, why... ? Only collection/hobby, and definitely not practicality.

Fat 60gb ps3

Profchaos720d ago (Edited 720d ago )

@Eidolon I've actually got an original PS2 but I don't have a crt to play it on. Upscaling to a 4k tv doesn't look great and I've tried component cables and such but nothing has really worked for me.
I would happily pay for a ossc or a framemister but apparently those are not that great for PS2.

I basically want the fat PS3 purely for PS2 BC on HD TVs

Eidolon719d ago (Edited 719d ago )

Component cables worked great for me, I do have one of the slim ps2 models, though. You can grab a cheap crt but shipping will be expensive and their brightness degrades. Nothing will beat playing PS2 on a CRT. Even upscaled PC emulation just exposes the age. Wish some technology like CRT could co exist with LCD and OLED, but for retro gaming.. and shit.. maybe could make older more recent gen games look decent again.

Modern gaming journalism. Creates division so that they have something to talk about in the time between new games.

PS2 BC wasn't finicky. It played nearly every game in PS1's catalog. The list was almost negligible. PS3 almost played all the games from PS1 and PS2 until the removal of full BC. But Sony showed you can sell over 100 million PS4 consoles WITHOUT it if you provide a smattering of new games. Microsoft showed you can't sell 100 million consoles WITH it if you don't provide enough new games for a new console.

Xbox is said to lead the way but if we were to count the total amount of BC games for each console, it's near the same amount. Microsoft doesn't play all its previous games as Sony doesn't. Just offering different selections.

New games for new consoles still matter and should always be the priority. BC is fine but should be secondary to providing new games. There isn't any new battleground. If a strategy is to look to the past for games already played or purchased for new consoles, you're looking in the wrong direction. It would be the same with subscriptions. You don't watch Netflix to watch old shows you already watched even if they were good. You look to watch NEW shows you haven't watched.

I know some love trophy or achievement hunting. But that's not enough for me. Only if the games looked better, moves better and played with better controls. Going back to some these games with bad camera angles and tank controls to get a trophy doesn't sound fun to me. But that's just me. Some might. But I hope it's because a game was fun.

gangsta_red720d ago

"You don't watch Netflix to watch old shows you already watched even if they were good. You look to watch NEW shows you haven't watched."

What a horrible take. There are shows on Netflix that are old that I never watched that are still very good. The 4400 and Peaky Blinders are just a couple that I recently discovered on Netflix. There's a reason old movies are reformated and put on new media. Because there's always a generation that wants to watch something that could be considered timeless.

The same can be said with many games that people never played in the past that they have always been told were good. A new console should be able to not only play new games but also have the ability to play classics.

Also...Absolutely no one is saying that new games don't matter or that BC is necessary to win the console war. I feel this over exaggerated narrative keeps being brought up because of how long certain people downplayed gamers wanting a way to play their old games and Sony not providing a means to do it, even when they had emulators available.

Sony even went as far as releasing their own study saying that less than 3% (or something) hardly used BC. And Jim Ryan even laughed at older games saying asking why would anyone play them. But as usual with companies that don't have the same features as the competition they go into PR cover mode until they're up to speed. As you can see BC is now the talk of the town again.

Sony is using past games to bolster their library for their higher tier sub service. And it looks like they're adding a few additions to some of them like trophy support and multiplayer. This is a good thing. If there's any criticism to be made it's the fact that Sony is pushing old games to get people to subscribe to it's highest tier.

Eidolon723d ago

Too many, too poor 😳. Hopefully Premium has a good collection to start off with. Wish we could emulate from disc, I have a few and a friend with 100s, would be so nostalgic to borrow a retro game again.

ABizzel1724d ago

PS Now had already added trophies to these older games, so it's nice to see them continue to do this with their patent.

Eidolon723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

Which classics? Could you be thinking of the PS2 games(Arc the Lad, Dark Cloud, Ape Escape 2)? Those were not regular classics, they had to be altered.

ABizzel1723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

I think you're getting what I meant confused. I'm not talking about the PS Classic like on PS3 when they were in bubbles on the XMB. I'm saying that the PS2 games on PSNow allowed trophies, 1080p, etc... through emulation, so it makes sense that more games will be launching with trophy support as the patent back in 2015 stated that was the goal.

Native PS1 / PS2 support would be an awful idea, because resolutions and framerates will be horrible, especially on 4KTVs in regards to resolution. Emulation already has PS2 games running at up to 1080p and double-buffered to emulate 60fps which is a huge leap for all of those games. Trophies is just the cherry on top. At least that's how they were on PSNow, so here's hoping that's how all of the PS1, PS2, and PSP games work on PS+ Premium, along with a better 3x - 4x resolution bump per axis, instead of the 2x.

You literally posted exactly what I was talking about in your comment below lol

Majin-vegeta724d ago

Love Syphon Filter so this will do me nicely, hope we get a new one built for PS5.

Orchard724d ago

This is pretty neat, I wonder how 'involved' the trophies are, e.g. are they just 'finish level' or does it actually have knowledge of the gameplay and can do things like 'Kill X enemies', 'Finish level X only using the tazer" etc.

Also related... I hope when they put this on the store it sells a bucketload and we get a remake bundle and sequel.

generic-user-name724d ago (Edited 724d ago )

Not likely. A lot of these early 3D era games have aged like milk. MGS1 is my favourite game but it controls like absolute ass by today's standards. Jim Ryan's comment from a few years ago where he was criticised for saying nobody* wants to play these old games will be proven true in most cases.

I don't see the Fortnite crowd caring about any PS1 game.

*outside of a small niche

LucasRuinedChildhood724d ago (Edited 724d ago )

I hope MGS1 will have trophies as well when that eventually gets emulated.

I don't have many platinums but they're usually games I love (that also don't have annoying lists, haha). MGS1 wasn't the first game I played but it was the first game I bought when I got my second-hand PS1.

I'm pretty sure the reason I picked MGS is because I watched my cousins play Syphon Filter. lol. I'd like to finally give Syphon Filter a go.

Orchard724d ago

I was kinda surprised MGS wasn't in there, it's the first game I think of when I hear "PS1". On the other hand, it's probably down to Konami not Sony. They've also been pulling the HD titles etc from digital storefronts.

MrNinosan723d ago

As they not long ago removed all Metal Gear games from PSNow, I don't see any the chances of MGS on this service any time soon.
