The Guardian: Killzone 2 not up to 'standard' of Gears of War 2

the gameplay offers nothing new except maybe changing the camera position form behind the character when your in cover (RSV) to on your face.

First, it's a preview, not a review from what is obviously a Xbox fan working for the Guardian... Quite funny that he mention Gears twice and Halo once, manage to get the name Xbox 360 in the article, but never mention the term Playstation once for a Playstation game!!! Yes, it's threefold. First a preview of StreetFighter, then a preview of a pocket projector (you can connect to a Xbox 360 or dvd player, but no PS3 mention... this guy truly love his Xbox), and then in third, Killzone preview.

What I'm curious about is this... why even make the comparison at all? Killzone 2 and Gears 2 are different genres, different gameplay focus and design mentality. Both are good games. Well how many have you guys played KZ2 yet? Most likely not many right now except the demo portion, so you have no choice but to listen to the opinions of others right? I think perhaps they might be referring to the beautifully balanced gameplay and cover mechanics. I love Gears 2 and I'm really looking forward to Killzone 2, but face it anyone talking about Gears 2's lack of innovation: Killzone 2 has NO innovation either!

Is this a bad thing? Absolutely not. I think it's equally admirable of a game to take what's come before and perfect it to the highest possible degree.

I love Gears 2 and I can't wait for Killzone 2 which I'm sure will be great. I don't know if it's just the console exclusivity that makes people hate these amazing games, but if anyone is a true gamer they'll appreciate great games no matter what console they appear on.

Thats the problem with some that review PS3 games. The all seem to review the game as some comparison to a XBox360 conterpart. And they don't review it as a PS3 title without the comparison. I.E.

KZ2 reviewed to Halo 3 or GeOW2
Resistance 2 to GeOW2 or Halo 3
MGS4 to Halo3
Resistance: FOM to Halo 3
I even saw Haze compared to Halo3

Wait a minute I see a trend here... All possible Triple A PS3 exclusive titles will be reviewed in comparison to Halo3 and GeOW3. Is this all the 360 can amass. PS3 exclusive titles are reviewed in comparison to buggy games.

Oh please, any true Gears fan will tell you that part1 was much better! There was more cat and mouse/ stealth elements to the first GearsofWar. I think that the 5 on 5 just makes the maps feel overcrowded. The weapons are also tweaked and they have so many new funky weapons, definetly feels the influence of UT.

And lets be honest, nobody's buying these games for the single player. Just look at Bioshock, one of the best games of this gen, but the lack of multiplayer hurt it in the long run.

It definetly would have reached a bigger audience if it had mp, this is pretty obvious considering they just announced MP for Bioshock 2.

Gears is a great game, if you played either of them, you'd know just how satisfying they are. Bad story? Check. Over-manly characters with no need for helmets cuz their one-liners can stop bullets? Check. But the game plays real, real goddamned well. And IT LOOKS GREAT. No, it isn't Killzone 2 graphics, but it does leave enough room for coop, which is incomprehensibly fun.

That being said, I look forward to Killzone, but as a long time gamer and fan of both systems, you're a f@cking idiot to dismiss Gears. I just played the demo yesterday finally after having it on my Ps3 for quite some time and i've got to say. Very fun. I love how you feel like you're just one of many and not necessarily the "badass to end all badasses". The demo was short but sweet and i loved the weight on everything. No more moon boots and walking feeling as if you were merely gliding instead of taking actual steps. I didn't really play around with the cover mechanic too much because in the demo ui didn't really need it to be honest. I'm a pretty good shot with the guns in KZ2.

The only shooters on the 360 that aren't on the PS3 are Gears of War 2 and Halo 3.

Halo 3 isn't really up there with the rest of them. The campaign was shallow and the multi-player was just like the first 2...which were both Tribes rip-offs.

Gears of War 2, however...is a fantastic campaign experience! The multi-player sucks...but the campaign is so good! It's not MGS4 or COD4 good...but still very good.

Can these site/newspaper writers get it through their thick skulls that PS3 exclusives are on par with and a lot of the time better than any game released for the 360/PC/Wii???

I'm not saying you should hate on a game and you have every reason to. What I'm saying is that when people make a judgment without playing the full game, that's not an accurate assessment of what the full game will be. For instance, one of my favorite books is Rabbit, Run. However, that books start off slow and it was boring. The plot development was lacking and whatnot. However, as you continue, the book is amazing. However, I continued playing it despite the lackluster beginning (in my view) and was graciously rewarded for a wonderful experience. You should do the same for Killzone 2, if you decide to get it.

Okay i know i keep mentioning it, but Gametrailers.com gave Killzone 2 best graphics of E3 08 over Gears of War 2. Don't get me wrong i love Gears 2.But seriously man, come on. It's just disappointing to see some people go so far to demote a game. I still don't like the idea of comparing an FPS to a TPS. I love Gears of War 2, the pacing, the campaign, the multiplayer (after the patches even more), horde and the overrall "character" of the game. It has an identity that I find lacking in the very short demo I played of Killzone 2. The graphics, animations, textures, partical effects, lighting, etc are all gorgeous. However, I find the characters not very compelling and the Helghast are rather generic enemies. "Look out for the Red Eyes!!" "Here come the Red Eyes!!" cheezy city.

However, I am not going to form an opinion on the game until I have a chance to play it. I would get that same cheezy feeling if I just heard Marcus throw out a few one liners but after playing the whole game the characters starting appealing to me. I will give Killzone 2 the same chance since I never finished the first Killzone.

I am going to enjoy each game for what they are. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you are dissing Gears or Gears 2 I disagree. It's not a perfect game but it's a special one and does so many things right.

NOBODY HAS PLAYED THE RETAIL VERSION OF KILLZONE 2 EXCEPT THE MEDIA!! Now I have to say to me the demo is incredible, however you know what? On my first play-through I doubted it. I didn't like the button-layout, it was hard for me to aim, and it wasn't Call of Duty. I was briefly disappointed. I decided to go through it again. Something amazing began to happen: I began messing with the button-layout and ended up trying alternate 2 and turning up the sensitivity one notch on each axis. "AHHHH!!! Much better," I said to myself. I decided to go through a third and final time and by this time I was truly saying, "Goodness gracious this game is awesome!!" You see, this game is NOT Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, or Crysis. This game is Killzone and until people start to realize that and get used to what this amazing game (demo for now) is about they will continue to flame it. My point? At least wait until the retail release of this game to make claims that it is the Be All End All of gaming. To rehash a post I made on previous threads regarding KZ2, WITH THIS GAME NEXT GEN BEGINS

I've got lots of experience playing every type of game you can imagine and one thing I can't understand is when people criticize this game for not reinventing the FPS genre. Many people have had the realization I have had, play through the demo and get the controls set they way you like it then try to contain your angst to get your hands on the real thing. THIS GAME BLOWS MY MIND EVERY TIME I PLAY THROUGH THE DEMO! Sight and sound has never been stimulated like this in a video game. Every time is different, the AI reacts different, my shot is different and my satisfaction level for a game keeps getting bigger and bigger. Every opinion is going to be different but I think more people agree with me, who have actually played the demo 50+ times, this game is totally awesome. By the way if you have the means for 7.1 audio, this game will take you to a level of gaming never before touched simply by how is uses the 4 rear speakers. When you are against a wall and the enemy is firing at you, you will hear the bullets impact around your ears with a realism I have never experienced. I can't complain about one article that gets it wrong because there are so many articles that got it right. Go back and read some of them. "THIS GAME MAKES GEOW 2 SEEM LIKE A HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT." The average review score is still above GEOW2, COD, and HALO. The only reason I am taking time to write a comment is because I'm taking a break from the DEMO. Just wait to play through it yourself, this game will last in your library far beyond anything that has come before it. Just don't let the envy of others get to you, its only going to grow as the exclusive library grows...

I agree that Killzone 2 is going to be awesome. That's what I was trying to get across to some of the people who claimed they played the demo and it was "garbage." I tried to explain that it took me several play-throughs to get used to it and to actually start liking it just because this game is so different from every FPS I have ever played. Now I don't just like it, I am astonished every single time I play through the demo, and I might add I just played through it for the third time today (probably about twenty + times total now)!! All I have been trying to get across on the thread is that very few have actually sat down with the final retail copy so everyone needs to chill and wait until the game actually arrives before we all lose our minds here and claim that it is garbage (like the 360 camp) or heavenly (like myself and the PS3 camp). I don't find nothing big in GoW just that have a lot of blood and the chainsaw and a good co-op but the control sucks in both mp and sp, the host god bs is crap and not even talk about the aiming which is the worst I ever seen in a game, is not that I didn't play the game but is not even compare it with KZ2.

XDF: The graphics and 7.1 audio was a secondary point to the unbelievable AI, and GAME PLAY satisfaction. For KZ2 graphics to be secondary to game play should say something since everyone will agree that KZ2 is the best looking and sounding game to date. After sinking into this game you will realize intelligence goes beyond IQ, but despite that, the blonde would give you the craziest ride of your life.

gow2 = great game but it still has alot of flaws/bugs. so it's hardly a good standard. considering for the first few months playing online was awfull (and still is alot of the time), ranks didn't work properly, really bad host adv, tons of glitches - just not a great standard imo

perhaps the single player of gow2 will be better than the single player in kz2 but in all fairness for both games i play the single player once and then its's all about online, and as i've mentioned, gow2 online ins't exactly fun or 'a good standard'

Okay, first off, let me say that my tastes tend to run the way of the 360. While I wouldn't call myself a fanboy, when I look at my gaming library, it is heavily skewed on the 360's side. When buying multi-platform games, I always choose the ones 360 version. (Okay... maybe I am a fanboy...)

That being said, I am truly excited about Killzone 2. I can't count the number of times I've played the demo. Many times, I'll clear out the bech area, and then just roam around, checking out the character models, the textures, the architecture of the level, etc. You can really tell a lot of attention to detail went into making this game, and it really does show off what the PS3 is capable of. I'm hoping a lot of game developers follow GG's lead, and we start seeing some truly stellar titles coming, and my lonely PS3 will see a lot more usage.

I enjoyed Gears 2, I liked playing it. And at the end of the day, that's all that really matters to me. But having played it and the K2 demo, I don't really see how they can be compared in a review type setting. the two games "feel" completely different when playing. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Yeah, they're both fruit, and yeah, they're both delicious, but beyond that, the comparisons lose relevancy.

Side Note: I noticed the postings earlier about Heavenly Sword, (which I also enjoyed very much.) Did anybody out there know that the actress who voiced Nariko is the same one who plays Agent Olivia Dunham on Fringe?

The only reason somebody would compare Gears 2 and Killzone 2 graphic wise would be because both happen to be a dark/gray type of game. You can't however compare them as far as gameplay. A FPS and TPS play differently than each other. I personally believe that if you are reviewing/previewing a game no other title should be brought up. Whyyy oh why should i be a fanboy, when i own both systems?
i used to be a PS3 fanboy (believe you me), until i bought a 360, and realised that it had, and still has the best exclusives. And if they arent exclusive, they have exclusive DLC (fallout, GTA, and that some awesome DLC)

The PS3 is beginning to catch up, but imho it will only surpass the xbox360 when UC2 and GoW3 is out. But by then ME2 and Bioshock 2 will also be out, with a possible GeOW3 right behind.

From my experience newspaper reviews for games are less than reliable. Majority of multiplatform games get reviewed in UK papers based on the 360 version, very rarely (if ever) is the PS3 version the review copy so it seems as if the general media sway towards xbox in some regard anyway.

Had this review come from a gaming publication i could possibly understand the uproar but this is a bog standard "newspaper" game review and definitly doesn't deserve the level of attention it's getting.

The Guardian is also notorious for having a readership that is about as far from your average gamer as you can get. Imagine getting a game review from your dad or your 50 year old uncle and youd'd be in the right ball park...
