Did Gears of War Innovate the Cover System

From the editorial:

"As the graphical prowess of Xbox 360 games become a familiar and taken-for-granted normality, they have to individually reinvent themselves on a deeper level, in order to stand out from the crowded release schedules and stand up to the test of time. While it may be an obvious fact, good graphics only give a game temporary appeal since they can become outdated relatively quickly, but good game design is timeless and classic. An innovative design feature in a game may quickly become a selling point of its entire genre, with subsequent clones adapting it with ill-consideration merely to get a slice of the profits, but its original invention and subsequent reinvention proves that, as Epic's mantra goes: design is indeed God."

Not really IF i am not mistaken the first game that had this type of cover system first was Killswitch, everyone followed suite there after.

Fishy Fingers5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

Yup, Killswitch is certainly the "innovator", Gears helped refine the concept, but if you watch some Killswitch gameplay > http://www.n4g.com/gaming/N... it's obviously the starting block. It still looks fun now :)

You can see so many aspects of that game in future (current) games.

Trollimite5570d ago

why is this in the ps3 section? mod please move this

thereapersson5570d ago

Man, I forgot how crappy the animation on the characters were in that game...

Still, the major component of Gears of War can really be attributed to this game, as well as a game called "WinBack" on the PS2 / N64.

Valkyrie835570d ago

PS3 section removed; good article ....I think the cover system did start some time before Gears of War but it seems as though that game really made it mainstream and tweaked the cover system allowing gamers to use it more.....

Coconutz9195570d ago

Ah, you beat me to it! I remember Winback very well, and I actually really liked the game back in the day, mostly because of the cover system. It's a shame Winback 2 was a bust.

edgeofblade5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

Sure, Killswitch did lay the ground work, but I think Gears' roadie run and cover transitions did a lot to refine the model. Instead of just "cover", now there are mechanisms to help you move from cover to cover.

I think we can agree that third person is important for doing cover right, which is why I think Killzone 2 didn't do it quite right.

phosphor1125570d ago

No mention of the ORIGINAL game that made the cover system. ALSO if Gears didn't have a cover system, it wouldn't be "frustrating" and w/e, it would be a completely different game, because devs aren't stupid enough to make a game where you NEED cover, without the ability to take cover. This is f*cking stupid.

she00win995570d ago

if you read the article the writer just reminded us that the mgs series has a cover system too and it was released way before gears of war..

GWAVE5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

There was a game for the origial Xbox called "Strike Force Nemesis" or something like that. Other than having inferior graphics, it has every aspect of the cover system in Gears 2: blind fire, the "roadie run", sliding along cover, jumping from cover to cover, etc.

Anyway, I say that because Kill.switch wasn't the only game to contribute to the cover system before Gears came along. WinBack and Psy-Ops also had cover systems, IIRC.

Tempist5570d ago

Popularization of the cover system; yes it did do that. Did it innovate it? No, not really.

The article left out Uncharted's cover system which has this little unique feature of having it crumble away over time, or Nathen reacting to being shot at, or I recall a number of times, being out flanked / forced to find new cover.

Credit where credit is due for sure, but make sure you credit everyone for their part. Will be interesing to see how Uncharted 2 takes on the cover system.

ikaris5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

I remembered getting killswitch because the cover system looked cool.
All gears of war fanboys think their cover system is innovative and new from other games, but I'd hate to break it to you kids, cliffy is human, and takes ideas from other humans, just like all video game designers do.
It was 'refined' I guess, because ever implementation in another game has to be done a little differently, but in killswitch I never remember trying to RUN somewhere and getting stuck in cover instead. oh, and killswitch was actually challenging, and a lot less buggy than gow2.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5570d ago

Killswitch started it and Gears perfected it.

DA_SHREDDER5570d ago

Killswitch is a better game then gears IMO. Gears didn't innovate anything. It actually suffers from bad gameplay mechanics. The game sucks. It wouldn't even be worth mentioning if the game didn't have the lancer. Gears is freaking last gen compared to Killswitch.

ThanatosDMC5570d ago

Actually, Winback on the PS2 did cover system first. 4 players deathmatch on Winback was pretty hilarious... melee first then shoot 2-3 times.

cappakrako5570d ago

it had a cover system. does that not count cause it's ps1?

soccerstar5570d ago

I have always thought that Rainbow Six had a much better cover system then Gears

phosphor1125570d ago

Cover systems refer to shoot/hiding, while MGS utilized a sneaking system, based on stealth, yeah, you can ditch the baddies by finding "cover" and waiting, but it was more of a hiding spot, not a spot to give you cover as you shot back at them...I love MGS though <3

Shepherd 2145570d ago

Gears did innovate the cover system. Its so easy to use a 5 year old could do it, but it can be used so strategically which is what makes gears copies sell. Of course other games used a cover system before gears, but gears innovated it by making it crucial to survival and revamping the ease-of-use and the way its used.

Oh wait that cant be because this is a 360 game!!!!/sarcasm

You can compare first and third person shooters, but I don't think on rails shooters compare as well. It's like Apple, Oranges, and Green Beans. It's not even a fruit.

manwich255570d ago

Syphon Filter invented cover based gameplay.

DelbertGrady5570d ago

Nope. To be picky a PC/Amiga/SNES/etc game called Blackhawk/Blackthorne did. It was released in 1994, developed by none other than Blizzard.

Blackthorne
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Before that there was a game called Hostages that also had coverbased gameplay. It was released in 1988 and was developed by Infogrames.

phosphor1125570d ago

I can understand how that game has a cover system, but I think they were referring to a 3D game >_<. Nice looking game though, is it freeware yet?

Lord Vader5570d ago

Loved me some Syphon Filter.

Shepherd 2145570d ago

its not about what invented it its about what made the cover system innovative.

gears did that.

Bathyj5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

I can literally think of a dozen games I've played, that had a cover system before Gears.

And Rainbow 6 came out at the same time and did it better as well.

UltimaEnder5570d ago

The article isn't called "Did Gears of War Create the Cover System"; it's discussing the innovation of it. Of all those games that you are thinking of did any of them sale as many units as Gears did, I believe Epic innovated upon the cover system and created what so many gamers love and cherish in their titles these days.....a workable action-cover system.

Capt CHAOS5570d ago

Though, rainbow 6 is pretty darn cool too.
But I do like the innovations in the Gears system.

blackbeld5570d ago

Time Crisis 1 and 2 Have the best action cover system!!!!!!!!!!!

But it was only on PS1 and PS2 also PS3 ....... 360 owners have there first cover system experience with the 360 mann..... how sad can it be....

killzone2flop5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

Your a Sony Fan Retard so what ever you say doesn't matter. Anyway yes Gears of War Innovate the Cover System.

Also get the F*ck out of Xbox360 news this has nothing to do with Droids.

Fishy Fingers5570d ago

"Also get the F*ck out of Xbox360 news this has nothing to do with Droids. "

Says the guy found spamming any and everything PS3. Hypocritical maybe?

jaybdemented5570d ago

@flop

i see you all over n4g acting like you know what your talking about. now your chance to prove it please go deep inside your 5 year old head and tell us what is so innovative about it. come on pp, this is your chance to prove your not completely full of s@@@

cereal_killa5570d ago

PP unlike you other people own both systems and don't have to result in being a hypocrite since all you do is troll in every PS3 is this and that article and wow looks like you were able to bubble your self up you were at 1 bubble the other day let me help you back to 1 where you belong Muppet.

Ranking The Gears Of War Games From Worst To Best

The Gears of War series has been a consistent deliverer of quality for Xbox, but which games are the best?

KicksnSnares693d ago

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies692d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638692d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72693d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337693d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever692d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

MadLad693d ago

3
5
2
1
4
Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds693d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.

It's brilliant but personally liked part one more. It's the only one that had a near horror movie vibe to it in parts, the atmosphere was amazing.

Also, the commercial for it was 🔥🔥🔥

https://youtu.be/wy8LRlS1SC...

Neonridr826d ago

Mad World was such a perfect song for that trailer. I loved part 1 too just because it was so fresh at the time. The series has been solid, but experiencing everything for the first time was pretty awesome.

ChasterMies826d ago

Gears of War 2 has one of the greatest campaigns of all time. Carmine, all that juice, fighting inside a giant worm, and riding monsters.

Knightofelemia827d ago

Gears 1 and 2 will always be my favorite Gears titles. The scene where Dom find his wife and then has to shoot her was an epic scene.

monkey602826d ago

I always found that scene laughably bad myself. Fantastic game though.

1 will always be my favourite. Most were great with the exception of 4 being okay and judgement being terrible.

They still have the most satisfying headshots from any multiplayer game around.

lucian229826d ago

Nah I laughed, the acting was soooooooooo bad

KicksnSnares827d ago

My favorite Gears game list
1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 1
4. Gears 4
5. Gears 5
6. Gears Judgement

Gears Of War is my favorite video game franchise. I can’t imagine how Gears 6 will look in UE5 after watching Hellblade 2 gameplay trailer

RetroCaptainSteve827d ago

Or if they remake 2 and 3 with that engine.

KicksnSnares827d ago

There is a rumored Marcus Fenix collection (Gears 2 & 3 remake) in the works at the Coalition. Hopefully, it’s true, but I doubt it.

Profchaos826d ago

For me you can't beat gears 1 the original was so fresh and revolutionary at the time.
Then basically I'd rank it 2,3,5,4 and judgement

Viljong826d ago (Edited 826d ago )

One of the reasons why i got the series x. Been fan since the first game.

myfathersbastard826d ago

Played them all recently on gamepass. Great games. But my favorites gotta be gears tactics. Don’t know why. I just had a blast with it lol

5

3
Judgement
4

Sciurus_vulgaris1169d ago

1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 5
4. Gears 1/UE
5. Gears 4
6. Gears Judgement

Atom6661169d ago

This is the correct answer.

nibblo1169d ago (Edited 1169d ago )

Close to my rankings but some differences. My rankings:

1. Gears 3
2. Gears 5
3. Gears 4
4. Judgement
5. Gears 2
6. Gears 1

People will hate on me putting Gears 2 so low but I always felt the graphics were too busy to the point of confusion and the combat/movement hadn't really improved over 1. Lot of cool ideas but execution wasn't the best as far as I'm concerned.
