Has our beloved blue hedgehog "run his course"? When a game franchise has been milked to death, and your favorite characters reduced to laughing stocks, when is enough, enough? Is it time gamers told the developers "Please, let them die" when something has just gone on far too long?
Within this article, the author discusses what made Sonic great, and why it might be time for Sega to finally put him to rest.
WTMG's Leo Faria: "Sonic Heroes is an enigma of a game. It is bad, in every technical aspect you can imagine. Upon replaying it for the first time in more than a decade, I did noticed how poorly it aged. Yet… I really don’t care. It’s the bizarre kind of charm featured in every single Sega game from this era. Call it nostalgia, call it game feel, Sonic Heroes is the kind of game you know you shouldn’t like as much as you do, but you couldn’t care less about that. It just takes a few seconds of listening to that adorable Crush 40 theme song for you to basically shut off the logical parts of your brain and proceed to enjoy this adorable jankfest with the biggest of smiles."
The popular Sega franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog, has been really successful in recent years, forging paths for the recent upcoming titles.
These sales surged by 150 million compared to last year.
we need a new sonic pinball, with boss battles / hidden stages / 1 sec load times
Still need to check out Frontiers at some point. Just waiting on a really good Steam sale for it.
I agree. They haven't made a good Sonic game since Adventure 1, and many fans would even dispute that. They really had 8-9 chances on this one.
This is a prime example of a great game concept and franchise being beatin to death by people who overly think what a next gen game should be.People seem to forget alot of what we liked about old franchises were their gameplay.
Instead people are to focused on making cross genre games, online, mulitplayer, graph ics,and special achievements instead of first perfecting the gameplay.
Especially in an old franchise from the golden age of gaming Sega among others should know that gameplay was the number one selling factor fro games back then.Sonic unleashed almost had it untill they thought about Sonic going all Teenwolf on us because they thought the game needed more.
Overthinking often leads to bad ideas.
Things that ruined Sonic:
1. His 'cool' voice in the games.
2. His numberous typical random 'furry-like' characters that turn up in games like annoying flies.
3. Changing Dr. Robotnik's name officially to 'Eggman' creatively just because he looks like an egg.
4. Putting lyrics to what would sound like cool tunes if it wasn't for the singing.
5. Trying to find a balance between 2D and 3D gameplay.
6. Having no-coherant plotline throughout all the games.
7. Taking him away from Moebius and plonking him on Earth with humans.
8. Not going back to the Green Hill Zone and ignoring the simple chequered patterns that made Sonic games so memorable.
9. Making a rubbish sequel to the great Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast.
10. Giving him stupid abilities.
I wonder how that could work out in a modern day scenario...
Wow, that loading clip from Sonic '06 is insanity.
