On the surface, Holic could be described as World of Warcraft Extra Lite – apparently the influence of Blizzard's unstoppable MMOG beast is farther reaching than thought, as many aspects of Holic's core gameplay are strikingly similar, right down to the yellow question marks that float above quest NPCs. Mind you most quests boil down to the "kill ten rats" variety, although in Holic's that should be "kill ten giant killer mushrooms and fluffy bunnies". That said, Holic does have a few cool mechanics hidden up its virtual sleeves that shouldn't be overlooked, as they help distinguish the game from the crowd in some meaningful ways.
While Holic clearly isn't attempting to offer the kind of depth found in triple-A MMOGs, one can see how it might be attractive for a younger audience. There's enough odd visual elements to keep you entertained so long as you can overlook the fact that the majority of gameplay boils down to grinding mobs. Between groups, the grind can definitely bring the overall experience down, but that's nothing getting shot out of the Human Cannon can't fix!
MMOCrunch makes a list of 9 free MMO's which deserve your attention.
I played huge time on Cabal Online. I participated to the closed beta and open beta and remember before its launch when it was considered as "the first Devil May Cry-like MMO".
But there were 3 problems: first, the maps were very small for a MMORPG, when you see huge worlds as in Lineage 2 or 9Dragons. Then, there were no healer class, every class has its magic, can heal itself a bit, and real buffers were lvl 60-70. And finally, the price of potions was way too small, meaning you could easily buy 250 potions when you are a noob, decreasing the party interest.
But i loved playing Cabal, i don't regret having lost my social life on it.
im trying to get into Mythos beta. seems very nice. anyone knows anything about it? seen the vids and screens, looks really nice, especially the graphics, usually free games have crappy.
Nice list for fans of the genre . In my case i cant be fan of any , since my grip with ultimately all mmo is the amount of grind . I dont kid myself , quests are just a deguised form of grind , but the illusion would be enough for me . Thats why i'm more inclined to enjoy mmo such as wow and a few others , since they drown you with their lore , quests and story bits .
Unfortunately most free games fails hard in quests and storylines . Not to mention that their world is horribly static (but to be fair , its like that with nearly all mmos)
