Naughty Dog: 'Uncharted bigger than Tomb Raider'

Key word there is "PlayStation audience." not many people outside of that have ever heard of uncharted and even less could tell you who drake is. Personally I like TR better maybe it just cause I've been a fan of the game when it was 1st announced.

Tomb Raider 1&2 were really good, but since then it's been sh!t to sh!t.
I think Uncharted is a lot better in terms of gameplay, story telling, dialogue, motion... (it's so well done, it's like you're watching a movie), but it's not on the same level in terms of popularity.

Uncharted is better hands down than Tomb Raider. Sorry, but the TR series is dead and the Uncharted games are upcoming and awesome. It's almost like comparing the Indiana Jones movies to the TR movies, no contest... Especially if you ignor the last Indiana movie.

i love both but the real classic is the 1st tomb raider....in 1996 the game was more impressive than uncharted in 07 though i god dam love that game!

Yes there has been tons of TR games. First three were awesome, but then it went downhill. Now there has been only one uncharted game. We can't know if the rest of the series will be any good. But since it's made by NaughtyDog I have high hopes for it...

Tomb Raider and Uncharted may be similar in terms of locale, but nothing else.

Tomb Raider is more of a puzzler like continuum with just as many if not more animals than humans.

Uncharted is more of a shooter like Kill.switch with arguably all people.

Sold pretty well, had legs and overall was a fantastic game.

I will say that Tomb Raider never appealed to me. She is hot and all but also not real and nothing worth getting excited about. The series is old and needs to take a break. Uncharted on the other does everything Tomb Raider wishes it could do. I'm surprised Tomb Raider didn't borrow elements from Uncharted in the most recent game.

lara croft has aged and is to old to stand on her legs in this generation now.
she had her time and thats why i think that lara's fanbase has fallin with her in terms of her popularity back then in the ps1 days.

imo drake is the throne taker now for popularity wise-nughtydog created a great story line with character depth (witch is hard imo),and toped it off with top notch gameplay and true next-gen visuals witch all together made Drake and his compadre's memorable.

And with uncharted:amongst thieves,the fanbase is gunna grow even STRONGER,LARGER and more DEVOTED as the years go on,i mean the demand was pretty freakn high for and uncharted sequel from my experience on the internet.

You have to stop and consider what they are known for. Uncharted is regarded as being, simply put, a great game. The first 2 Tomb Raiders were good, but it was mainly due to Lara's bust that it got, and has continued to get, any attention.

But teh ezcluzibe DLC... While sony spend money in awesome new IPs microsoft just spend billions in timed exclusives, buy some mediocre PS3 exclusives to go multiplat, exclusive DLC and worst of all, timed demos, while they close game studios to finance it.

2008 was a great year for PS3 owners and 2009 just look even better. For the xbox owners, keep waiting for Alan Wake to save you, and some more halo milkage and that lame GTA4 DLC ;)

Lara Croft needs to end her jouney's or follow in Drake's footsteps. Sure Lara's got the looks(body, not graphically) but beyond that shes kinda dull. Sure Drake is not as popular as Lara (yet) But in due time i think we will see his popularity surpass that of Lara as new titles are created. The original Uncharted had that Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones feel, but also created a unique 'everyman' character in Nathan Drake.

Lady Lara was always my first female video game character that i had a huge....uhhmmm....crush on(among other things). Seeing her games not age well does sting a little bit but Underworld was really playable even if it did have some issues and was better than most TR games. the first two were the sh!t..but after playing about the nexxt five or six (i lost count), i got bored with it..i got tired of shooting lions, bears and t-rexes (wtf?!?) but uncharted has delivered an adrenaline game..something TR tried to do in its last game (not underworld, but the one before that)...like everyone else says, Uncharted is BIGGER than TR, but it surely is better...maybe if they stuff going to the middle of nowhere and actually give us something to do, not just getting a book, a key, and some ammo

For me Uncharted was better than any of the Tomb Raider games I've played although I haven't bothered with Underworld.

Uncharted is definitely a better game in every aspect but it isn't a bigger or more popular franchise. Tomb Raider has had 2 hollywood movie releases and over the years has had extensive marketing not to mention having been around for 10 years or so. People are familiar with it.

However if you're talking within the Playstation 3 audience he may not be far off but overall TR is a bigger and more popular franchise at this point in time.

Considering I don't think there's been a decent TR game for about a decade now, I'd have to agree. Although Anniversary wasn't too bad, but that was just the original with better graphics.
If Eidos hadn't drove the franchise into the ground, maybe it wouldn't be the case, but Uncharted is definitely the "new" Tomb Raider.

Uncharted will never be bigger than Tomb Raider and saying it's better is opinion. If you look a Metacritic Tomb Raider(PS1)received an overall 91, while Uncharted only received an 88 overall score. Why you ask? Cause when Tomb Raider came out it was a fresh and new experience and Uncharted is considered nothing but a clone. Hell, the reason they made the main character of Tomb Raider a women was to get away from the Indiana Jones comparison. Uncharted is nothing but an Indiana clone and a bad one at that. Pretty graphics with mediocre game play. The other reason it won't be bigger is cause TR is multi and Uncharted is PS only so it will only be bigger in Sony fanboys minds.

Suicidal, Uncharted is the best game on PS3, so it is above mediocre in my opinion. Having said that, I entirely agree with your observation that Uncharted is far far from being as big as Tomb Raider.

When Tomb Raider first came out, it was revolutionary and had an immense impact on the gaming community. In comparison, Uncharted did nothing to revolutionize the genre and apart from memorable animations did not leave that much of an imprint except on the starving PS3 fans.

Of course one might credibly argue now that Uncharted is a better game than the latest incarnation of Tomb Raider, but rational people do not take a game that is at its peak and compare it to a game at its sunset moments.

Hit disagree all you want, but Crab is right. Tomb Raider has had movies made after it, with Angelina Jolie, an A-list celebrity play Lara Croft. Tomb Raider is more successful as a franchise. Uncharted only has one game so far, so it's hardly a franchise.

Having played many Tomb Raider games and Uncharted, I prefer Nathan Drake already. I like his teased relationship with Elena, his relationship with Sullivan and how he's just a guy in a bad situation. He comes across as much more real person than Lara ever has.
