How Did You Decide Upon Your Next-Gen Console Purchase?

First one I got was the 360, because I loved Morrowind and was dying to play Oblivion. At the time, it was significantly cheaper to buy a 360 than it was to buy a full PC capable of playing it, so the choice was made for me. 250 hours I put into that game.

I got a Wii later on, when it launched. Because I was caught up in the motion control thing they were touting. I was one of these people that was like "Got my 360, it's got awesome graphics and some good games and it's way less than the new PS3. PS3 is copying the Wii with its poor man's motion controls. Who needs that PS3." So, for a year, I went without a PS3.

Around the time I saw the first gameplay footage in 2007 from Metal Gear Solid 4, I was like, "OK, yeah, PS3 must be mine." So I got a PS3. It was cheaper by then, and I'd realized that other than a few solid games, the Wii was mostly just a toy and good for legal versions of classic games. PS3 has since been the console that's gotten by far the most playtime out of me, with special thanks to Warhawk, which is the most perfectly balanced & addictive online game I've ever enjoyed. My initial views on the PS3's lack of games, lack of impressive features to justify the extra cost, and lack of innovation through what I perceived to be "copied" features have all been proven false. Nowadays, when friends ask which system they should buy, I recommend the PS3.

It is really funny that on N4G.com that the majority of posts here are dominated by PS3 users. I find it really interesting/pathetic that fanboys have to justify their purchases to everyone while ragging on the other consoles.

In reality, there are alot more 360 users out there then PS3 users, yet.... this site is dominated by PS3 users. Why is that? Is it because they rather troll on a gaming site than play their precious gaming console? Or is it because they feel the childish need to defend a piece of machinery or they just don't play their PS3 that much?

P.S. I own a killer PC rig, 360 and PS3. I play my 360 the most, followed closely by my PC, and in the far rear, my PS3 gets played more as a bluray movie player than a gaming console. Easily, the 360 slaughters the PS3 for quality shooters and driving titles. The PC slaughters all for RTS and strategy games. The PS3 just really doesn't have much for a gaming library yet. Killzone 2 I have to say is my first "must have" game for the PS3, and thats pretty horrid considering it is 2 years old. So goes my childish fanboy 2 bits.

Now off to slaughter some Nazi's in Company of Hero's.

I've owned every console since the Nes but i will never buy a 360. even if they manage to fix the RROD i won't buy one. I can't believe people actually support these types of business practices. The Wii is a better console than the 360 as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably buy a wii when the price drops. I'm not willing to spend the $250 + $60x3 (wiimotes and nunchucks).

I got a PS3 at launch, cos of it's potentially great games (that seem to be coming this year and next year), and a good variety of games. Also I've owned PS1, PS2 and PSP, so PS3 was a natural evolution. I didn't really care about the power or reliability.

I got my used 360 a last year, for the games that are available, not so much for the upcoming games. Halo 3 was NOT the reason for purchase, mainly Gears of War. I only got it cos it was relatively cheap and it came with Bioshock, Halo 3, Gears of War, Stranglehold.

The Wii on the other hand, I want to get it, but I'm stopping myself because I KNOW that after two weeks I will get bored of it and it will be a £180 paperweight. I may reconsider after Madworld is out.

for one, the RROD wasn't really significantly noticed until over a year after the 360 came out. Besides that, I'd say the consoles are about equal quality-wise. I don't really think that the PS3's is worth its high price. I bought it anyway for MGS4. : )

I didn't I bought them all. Didn't see much point in tring to choose anything at all. I want all games that appeal to me so this is the only way to do it. There has been disapointments along the way from all 3 camps, but I still love them all in certain ways.

Wii has to many games that are not suited for my taste. My 360 just can't seem to stay working. The Ps3 had a really slow start so games were hard to find that I wanted. But now I love all 3 systems for the games that they can give me. If I had to get rid of one it would be the Wii it doesn't get near as much playing time as the PS3/360. I got both and price was a big issue. I got the 360 first because most of my friends had one and it was cheaper at the time, then when I seen a good deal for the PS3 a few months later, I got it (£200 for a 40Gb GT5:P box, this was before E3 and even now it's not a bad price at all).

I came about the decision to buy a PS3 rather easily.... I've owned previous Playstation consoles, so a PS3 purchase at launch was a no brainer.

For the most part, it was the Playstation Exclusive franchises (God of War, Gran Turismo, Shadow of the Colossus, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Jak and Daxter, etc....) that drew me to the PS3, and the fact that I was a previous Playstation console owner.

If Splinter Cell Conviction and Alan Wake weren't coming out on the PC, then I probably would get a 360 just for those 2 games, but the majority of 360 games come out on the PC, so for now I'll just stick with my PS3.

I never owned a Original Xbox, so when the 360 first came out, I didn't consider it, and at that time I was still pretty unfamiliar with Xbox franchises because I didn't keep up with anything regarding Xbox last generation, just PS2.

I remember when the PS3's price was first revealed, at first I was like: "Damn, that's a lot", but after the initial sticker shock settled in, $499/$599 didn't seem like that much to me and I simply saved up for it and got a Launch 60Gig model.

..... What else can I say, it's like Playstation is just in my Blood because it's been with me since 1995, LOL.

I loved the xbox...still could not get into Sony, despite having purchased the ps2...and thought Nintendo was on its way out after the low support for the gamecube. So I sold off my ps2, and gamecube to purchase a 360 on day one...along with getting over on Blockbuster. Come March 2008 when hd dvd's fate was sealed, I was ready to jump on bluray...and given that the ps3 was the best option, along with the scarcity of the 60gb model for bc, I was able to get a refurbished unit as a wedding gift. But the best way for me to explain why I personally PREFER my PS3 over my Wii or 360 as my "choice" is a repost from a while back edited here and there to fit here...

I believe most people would rather a sense of worth for what they paid for. The BEST Value for the cost of investment. Call me crazy, but I love my money and I think others do to. I personally want to get the most out of what I spend, and the last 2 gens Sony has not disappointed, neither has Nintendo for the vast majority of their outings. MS cannot say the same with the quick in and out >4 years support for the original Xbox.

That's not to say I do not appreciate any other console manufacturers or that I don't own/game on others (as I own at least 10 different consoles including a 360, Wii & PS3). It's just I like to as they say, "Work smarter, not harder" and that correlates to me, my decisions, my work/way of income & my money.

In addition, to put it simply, if you buy something that consistently fails, malfunctions & breaks was it worth the money spent? Quality does not only mean gameplay to me, it is a culmination of a few factors like stability, support, past history, build standards, performance and more. If I "lose out" on a very few titles just to avoid headaches, then it's not really a "loss" then huh? While on the flip side it's only a "plus plus" situation and the benefits truly outweigh playing a handful of games I personally wouldn't miss especially since I can get 95% of them on my PC.

Maybe I'm selfish but I want the most out of ANYTHING electronic and if certain companies fall short it's not my fault that manufacturer didn't commit/provide/fulfill what I wanted. I am not one to settle for less in ANY AREA of my life so why should I start with a console?

Xbox360 was the first next gen console released and I wanted it.

Ps3 I was under the impression it would be better then the 360 and get all the attention like the Ps2.... in all ways necessary when I purchased at launch(8hour camp on School Day) and was mistaken but at least I had BC and a free 3inch USB cord.

Wii I ebayed after making a killing on the sale of my 70 Orc Tier4 and 5 with Full Merciless Warrior 375BS/Eng for 2grand usd. (back when Merciless was the shizzzzit)

I mainly bought the PS3 because I was a loyal Playstation fan since the PS1. I had always bought a Playstation branded console first, and this wasn't an exception. Of course, when I purchased my PS3, MGS4 was already out so that gave me another incentive to get a PS3, but a few months later as Microsoft started to show off Gears 2, I started looking at the Xbox 360. There were a few games that I wanted for the 360 such as Gears 1 & 2, Halo 3, the upcoming Star Ocean 4, Mass Effect, and Left4Dead, but with the economy the way it is, I decided to hold off. The PS3 has some great gems coming out this year, and I wouldn't pass any of them up. Games such as Killzone 2 which is just weeks away, Uncharted 2, new Ratchet & Clank game, and possibly GT5 is more than enough to keep me on Sony's big black box.

360 - Couldn't wait to play the sequel to Perfect Dark, but I really wanted Oblivion more than anything even though I had an extra 4 month wait since it didn't make launch. Plus I knew it would have plenty of other games I'd like.

PS3 - Had to have FFXIII, MGS4, and Blu ray. I also knew it would have a great variety of games, many of which I was hoping would be RPGs...

Wii - Needed Twilight Princess and DBZ Budokai. The motion control looked to be amazing as long as games had real 1:1 motion control. I thought Nintendo would really push the third parties for more mature titles like they stated. This one turned out to be a massive mistake and a wholly different console than I imagined.

PS3 has one game in the top 20 for December and didn't even sell half as much as the 360 and lifetime sales are 13.2 billion for the 360 and 6.1 billion for the PS3.. How is that a sales increase?

I used to be a Nintendo fanboy. Disgruntled by the new direction the company seemed to be taking, I got into Halo, which led me to buy a 360. Later on I got a Wii for Super Smash Bros. and Zelda, but after a while I sold it in order to get a PS3.

Though I love both of my current consoles, I tend to play the 360 the most since I really don't know anyone else who has a PlayStation. Also I like using multiplats to boost my gamerscore.

One more thing: Are we still in the "next gen"? Will it eventually be the "current gen", or will we one day look forward to the "next next gen"?

i personally had to think on my decision for a LONG time, to decide if i wanted to get a 360 or wait for the PS3 (it was a long wait in Europe).

when i got to try Oblivion on the 360 i was absolutely blown away and i really wanted it.. but i still resisted, since i knew that the PS3 would probably be more to my liking. back then the PS3 was guaranteed to get the next GTA, the next Final Fantasy, the next Silent Hill, the next Metal Gear Solid.. and so on. so i skipped the 360 because i just couldnt risk missing ANY of these game series. eventually when Skate came out i couldnt resist anymore (love skateboarding), and bought myself a spanking new PS3 with backwards compatibility (yay!). then i got the PS3 version of Oblivion GOTY edition and my gaming needs were fulfilled.. (big THANK YOU to Bethesda btw for making a great port of one of the most important games this gen)

thinking back, it was a very good decision i got a PS3. if only for the reason that it's the quieter console, which is VERY important to me, because even the PS2 was too damn noisy for me and really irritated me. if i had gotten a 360 i would've been shocked by the noise it makes.. because whenever i got to test the console at a store or whatever, i had no idea, i never could hear its noise because it was in one of those "booth-thingys" (sorry my english isn't perfect lol, but you know what i mean).

and damn, i would've missed LBP if i hadn't bought a PS3...

i won't entirely dismiss the 360 though, that'd be just ignorant. for example, if the whole Mass Effect trilogy is 100% console exclusive to 360.. (which it most likely will be, i think) i will be REALLY tempted. the PS3 just doesnt have a great sci-fi adventure like Mass Effect, which sucks. Alan Wake interests me too, not least because it's a finnish game and i'm from Finland. and it's like the only big budget game made here in YEARS. so i'm rooting for it to do well, even if i cant get to play it. (BTW i believe the devs at Remedy are really perfectionists, trust me they are making sure it's a great game).

I knew what I was gonna get with both the 360 and PS3, or I thought so, as it seems xbox and playstation got their character sheets mixed up this time around. The 360 was out first, so I got that. Now, the only thing preventing me from getting a ps3 is the price. It has really good games now, so that's not a problem anymore. I want a Wii after trying it out with Wii Sports and SMG as well. Anyone feel like donating a fellow gamer some funds? ;)

Ive always owned a Playstation so naturally when the PS3 came out it was my first choice. I also wanted to get a 360 but was turned off because of the hardware issues and having a 360 fixed or replaced here is a problem since i live in a third world country. That is my only reason for not purchasing a 360 but it has a great library and im certain that aside from the hardware issues 360 owners enjoy it. Its great that people have 3 choices of consoles because everyone has their own preferences.

PS3 no doubt, it delivers everything I want out of the box an I knew the exclusives like to push the innovation stride in more ways then one. From day one I knew it would bring me amazing experiences in gaming an entertainment. An great games I never would have thought I'd be playing like Little Big Planet. Its that mix of certainty of knowing the amazing titles I will get like MGS4. An that surprise of OMG Sony pulled that one out of nowhere an its amazing. Its that which brought me to my console of choices an that which keeps me here having the fun that I do. With a community of gamers I have been blessed to meet on the PSN all around the world.

But those generalizations aren't very good. There are plenty of hardcore, casual, and non-gamers on every side. I'd actually say that true harcore gamers own at least the 360 and PS3. I initially didn't want a PS3 because there were no games I was interested in until MGS4, but according to you guys the 360 has no good games. My guess is that both sides have awesome games.

because i had always been and always trusted the Playstation brand, and i instantly loved it, at first not so many games, but i got and loved rainbow six vegas, resistance 1, and then the amazing online experience Warhawk
and gradualy the multi-plat AAA titles started coming

the reason i put off getting a 360 is the infamous RRoD, and the fact it had crappy games at the time, but then games like Fable II and Left 4 Dead peaked my interest so im glad i got a 360 when i did

I compared game libraries and the best exclusives available at the time. Back then it was an obvious choice - X360 had more games and Gears kicked Resistance's ass. Now I'm looking forward to get a PS3 to play Sony exclusives (I'll wait for Killzone 2 reviews though). If I was buying a console now, I'd probably go with PS3 and upgraded my PC a bit (to play Gears 1 and Mass Effect).

-Gears of war did it for me.
-Mario Galaxy did it for me.
-MGS4 did it for me.

**Controllers**
-Wii remote is the real innovator but is not fit for every game.
-PS3 controller is great for fighters and platformers.
-Xbox 360 controllers pwns in Shooters and such for retro and fighters.

**Network Infrastructure**
-XBL has been around and had great features out the gates.(I don't mind paying)
-PSN is still in it's infancy but YES you can't deny it's Free.
-Nintendo, well online play is not priority..so whatever.

**Company Support**
-Nintendo have always delivered 1st-party titles I have like for years. Though it has not been about graphics they are the most innovating when it comes to playing your games in a different manner.

-Sony's arrognace put me off early, then I decided to purchase the PS3 this early because I wanted the 60 GIG version. Sony have dominated the last 15 years because of the lack of stiff competition. Again hey have supported their console the longest so they are going nowhere.

-MS rushed the xbox 360 out the gates for strategy reasons and almost had it blew up in their face(literally). Same thing happened when they cut off the original Xbox but looking at the situation now, I know why they did it. Business is business. I think MS have the capital to back up it's Xbox 360.(we see this in advertising) seeing how it has sold and continue to get developer support.

I think we will see a new Xbox and Wii before a PS4. Can't wait.

Its not easy for most people to own multiple consoles. If you have to work and have a family to feed or if youre just a schoolboy with a regular allowance then the choice would usually fall to owning just one. But its good good that you can point out each systems strength and not biased towards any console. I had to work extra hard to afford a PS3 cause i have other bills to pay, but it was worth it cause i get to play LBP with my daughter and it became part of my family time.

Begin 2006 i was supposed to buy the PS3 because of the CELL. But then they slipped the release of the PS3 in Europe to Doomsday. That caused that I bought a 360. And you know what, I am happy with my decision because of the games I played and can play. Today, on the PS3 there are only 4 released games which I interested in: MSG4, Uncharted, White Knight Chronicles and Valkyrie Chronicles.

On my 360 I had the most fun with:

RS Vegas 1 + 2
Gears 1 + 2
Mass Effect
Oblivion
COD4
Dead Space
Fallout 3
Lost Odyssey
Fable 2
Eternal Sonata
DIRT
Halo 3

And there are a lot more I played which had not the same fun or quality of the above list.

When the 360 launched in the UK, I was still having fun with my PS2 and didn't feel the need to get another console just yet. A few months later, I witnessed Fight Night Round 3 and thought "I might have to get a 360 now as that looked amazing" until one of my friends told me I needed to pay to play online games with my friends....something I've been doing on my PC for free, so I said "Screw that" and waited.

When the PS3 came out, and I saw all the things you could do with it and more importantly it was going to have the sequels of games that I loved (GT, FF, Tekken, GOW, Wipeout, MGS) so I left £400 quid with my friend who worked for Gamestation so that he could pick one up for me on launch day as I had to catch a flight to Miami for spring break!!!

10 days of spring break in Miami, then coming back to the London with a PS3 waiting with Motorstorm, NBA 2k7 and Resistance to play.......that was a great year!

Have to go back to Miami!!!!!!

A few things swayed me to buy a PS3...

1) RROD - shamefully high percentages
2) Games - I prefer what the PS3 has to offer
3) Value for money - the PS3 actually works out cheaper for someone serious
4) BS routines - Sony got off to a bad start with hot air but MS and US based fanboys have definitely surpassed that blunder

It wasn't a quick decision, took me a good 12 months. I was originally a supporter of the xbox over the PS2 but things change, never regretted purchasing a PS3 yet and am happy I took the direction I did.

Purchased a 360 on day one, because I played my original Xbox on Live stupid amounts, had no complaints with it what-so-ever.
Got a killer gaming rig a few months after purchasing the 360 and I picked up a PS3 in August '08, and I've only played 3-4 games on it since I purchased it; MGS4, Uncharted and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

First I got the 360 because my friend had one and I really wanted to play Prey, Earth Defence Force 2017, Dead Rising the promise of Halo3, wanted Geometry Wars and run most of my old XBOX games.
Expecting the diverse selection of XBOX(1) on the 360, I found myself disapointed how most the 'must have' games were overrated and not even NEAR to the selection of games in the last generation.
After being completly disapointed in Gears of War and struggling for exclusive games of my taste my friend pointed me in the direction of Crackdown which I got trading the goddamn waful Forza 2 bundled with the system.
Earth Defence Force 2017 and Crackdown still rate as my favourite 360 games and really, except for the odd XBLA game, the only sole reasons I keep my 360. There really isn't any justified reason to be paying for online play.
I'm still waiting for Microsoft to impress me. Crimson Skies and more Oddworld would help.

A few weeks later I bought the PS3, which I was always going to buy but was 'advised' not to, naturally, the rebel that I am, I bought my PS3 awaiting the next chapter of Ratchet and Clank since I played all of them over a full summer and also waiting until Naughty Dog's (Back then) 'Project Big' was released (Uncharted) as I am a serious Naughty Dog fanboy. In the mean time I had the bundled Motorstorm
Turned out I was right, Ratchet and Clank was AMMMMMAZZZING, Uncharted was phenomenal, simply the best adventure console game of all time and all the people I knew that traded their PS3 for a 360 suddenly felt stupid, especially more so when Warhawk shortly came out and even more so with LittleBigPlanet and the upcoming Killzone 2.
After all, Sony does have the best inhouse selection of developers of all the console manufacturers, its especially great that nearly all multiplatform games are free to play online on PSN, so you can't really 'lose' having a PS3.

i was appalled by the 360 hardware: the failures, the corny looks, the heat, the noise, the disc scratching... what a POS!

i was appalled by the 360 business model: "here's a cheap car with optional wheels and a driving subscription, this way, you don't have to drive, you can just sit in it"

i ran a quick addition and it was obvious that ps3 was cheaper than 360 in the long run while being such a superior hardware, software and vision.

i didn't want to give my money to a pitbullish company that deliberately screwed its customers

it was going to cost 400+ to upgrade my computer and I got my 360 right before Gears 1 came out and gave it a bit of time for them to tweak the system. System lasted a year and a half then I got it back and it lasted 6 days with a RROD. Sent it in and got a brand new one which just now is in for repair about a year+ from when I got it. Still the game library is everything I want and more.

I knew I wanted the next Nintendo regardless, cause I gotta have my Marios, Zeldas, smashbros, metroids, Starfox, etc.etc. that and i wanted something different. I saw what direction Xbox was taking the industry and I didn't like it. So I went with PS3 for my 2nd and finally 360. Cause I still want to play all the best games, So i got all 3. Now if I had to choose just one....Wii. cause I have Nintendo running through my veins. I'm a classic console gamer so I had to go with the system that remains closest to console gaming which is the Wii. Over 200 games on systems that I've owned and died and even from it's competitors. The best thing is if some thing happens to my games I can always download them again.

HD gaming I'm going with the PC. Why go with a console when we all know that they are not capable of showing off what real HD texturing looks like nor high end shader effects. The same way you guys complain about the Wii I see the HD systems as old tech which just isn't getting HD gaming done the way it's should be done.

So there you go. The biggest reason is games though. If the HD console get a game that makes me want an HD system then I'll get one but so far that has not happened. I mean seriously does the HD guys know how to make a console game instead of a PC game, there is a difference. One look back at the 16 bit age or arcades and you'll see it.

What HD Tv do you have the WIi hooked up to? My cousin has a Samsung 42in 550 series with the Wii hooked with Component cables..PRime3 looked incredible on it.
