360 Editor's Blog: Halo Wars - First Impressions

360 Editor's Blog writes: "We've finally had a near-complete build of Halo Wars into the office, so naturally there's a bit of a buzz around the place. It's always been a bit of unknown quantity - everyone who has seen it has been full of praise, but there's no shaking the whole console/RTS concern that has dogged the genre forever.

Only one way to find out, though, so I put it on to test out the first few levels, and it's rather nice indeed.

Visually, it's slick enough, with a nice motion blur effect on flying vehicles and a bold colour palette, and Ensemble has managed to capture the Halo spirit superbly in the animation. Just watching the little Warthogs leap over cliff edges is enough to raise a smile on any Halo-boy's face."

Indeed it does. I just wish this was coming to PC.

happyface5600d ago

I bet this outsells Killzone by a lot

Mr_Zkaar5599d ago

I would be surprised going on the last crazy buying spree on Halo3 that you don't buy this. I'm glad 360 owners get an exclusive in February even if it's not a console seller.

Not sure how well a RTS will play on a console really RTS is more for pc, but the 360 blog sort of like it, not sure if he sounded blown away with it.

But if a game sells more than another game doesn't make that better, just look at Halo 3, GTA IV etc their ok games but not awesome ones.

Microsoft is going to regret shutting this studio down. =/

floppyfeet5600d ago (Edited 5600d ago )

ensamble sucks now....

if you played age of empires 3 you would know that the studio is drained of talent at this point and microsoft would really just be wasting money on funding them.

The only studio closure that bothered me was bizarre creations....

But then again i kind of understand why they shut that down too , There really is no point in microsoft funding 2 developers (turn 10 and bizarre creations) that are making PRETTY much the same type of games. And from what i understand Turn 10 is making PGR now , so no worries.

ThanatosDMC5599d ago

AOE sucked because you can just rely on one type of unit, a cheap and easy to make one, and spam the hell out of it and win.

It's used a lot in online games. Even melee fighters that's supposedly superior to musketeers or the likes get killed before they even get close to ranged units. That's how they lost AOE3.

I still find Age of Mythology as their best game though.

Rhoic5599d ago

Not to mention they hired like 70% of Ensemble Studios into their in-house dev teams.

The Judderman5600d ago

Im not really into RTS games but might give this ago. Will try the Demo in early Feb first though.

tplarkin75599d ago

I'm not into RTS, but the Halo universe sells it for me. The "new Cortana" looks cool, too.

resistance1005600d ago

Its all going to be on how good the demo is for me, i haven't played a good RTS on consoles in a long time, so heres hoping

The Halo Wars Formula Has Potential to Fit More Microsoft Franchises

Halo Wars is still widely considered one of the best and most accessible RTS games around, and that formula could work with other Microsoft IPs.

I think Crackdown would fit in a more turn-based tactics system via Xcom then a RTS type game play. Being able to customize multiple agents, deploying that group in an crime infested urban zone, going against other super powered enemy and fodder type thugs. The potential for that is huge if they won't do another successful, ground breaking, GOTY open world outing like Crackdown 3....

P_Bomb431d ago

I could see that. I feel like State of Decay could spin-off into something strategic as well.

giovonni430d ago

Actually that would be kind of fly if they made it a turn base RTS.

lellkay68d ago

Crackdown tactics would be legit!!

NoobFeed Editor Joshua Burt writes - There are many games in the famous Halo Franchise that are stellar titles and need to be revered. And some that do not. Halo CE over Halo Infinite anyday

Not to mention the impact it had at the time

Flawlessmic740d ago

Halo 3 at the top is correct the only thing id change is swap infinite and halo ce around.

AuraAbjure740d ago

Halo 4 best campaign and multiplayer. Halo 3 best story.

ChubbyBlade739d ago

Are you trying to give people cancer?

AuraAbjure739d ago (Edited 739d ago )

Halo 4 has the hottest Cortana too which explains why the MC is the hardest in that campaign and why H4's multiplayer is the illest. Chief ain't afraid to take on teleporting enemies that can one hit melee kill.

I feel like I see these articles often. Either way, just going by main titles as a whole package not just on MP I’d say;
Best 2,3,1,4,5 worst.
Story only;
Best 1,2,3,4,5 worst.
MP only
Best 2,3,5,1,4 worst.

Popsicle1017d ago (Edited 1017d ago )

Great list Deathdeliverer! The only place we differ is that I would put Halo 3 MP over Halo 2 MP, but gaming preferences are subjective and there are really no right or wrong answers. We match exactly on everything else. And yes, these list are made all the time, but they still get me to click on them. Lol!

Deathdeliverer1017d ago

I was really torn between the two so I’ll call it a toss up. They are head and shoulders above the other Halo Mps. It’s Halo 2/3 (in any order) then a pause, then the rest.
