Last year Guinness World Records released its first Gamer's Edition, a giant tome filled with videogame high scores and speed run times. The 2009 edition will be released on February 4 and IGN has gotten their mitts on an early copy.
You would think that with all the technology and graphics we have today, classics wouldn’t stand chance in gaming today right? Well think again. The top 5 games of all time are all classics.
Considering that "All Time" goes back quite a ways, it's not hard to believe that the top 5 games are "classics".
I personally think the original Super Mario Bros, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros 3, A Link to the Past, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Castlevania: SotN and Resident Evil 4 are all some of the best games of all time.
If you take away the nostalgia that surrounds those games though, you would have a damned hard time trying to come up with a credible argument that would place them in the top 5.
Where are game like General Chaos, Herzog Zwei, Doom, Quake? - All of which were far more enjoyable than some of those games listed...
These are just obvious choices :/

None of those next gen games deserve a spot. MW2, is marred by the fact that the consumer knows the game is plagued by cheating. AW, didn't resonate all that great critically or commercially. Killzone 3 may turn out better than KZ2 (and I expect Socom 4 to be better anyway) Gears 3 and Halo Reach aren't out yet so we don't know. I would pick Uncharted 2 over all five of those shooters.
Dude, come on man how are you going to argue with his opinion? He said games "HE THOUGH", not the games "YOU THOUGHT" changed the way people looked at them. I mean are we not entitled to our own opinion with having someone tell us we're wrong? What makes your opinion so much better? Yeah, GTA seemed like the oddball. All the others are still a lot of fun to play today, even if I wouldn't necessarily rank Mario Kart in the #1 spot.
but these are not the best games of all time. In fact, there are no best games of all time. There are so many gernes that there can only be "best games of X gerne"
And even if we try to find the best game of a specific gerne that would be totally subjective. This is why this story is an opinion piece and doesn't list the best games of all time but the writer's favourite games of all time
It's actually commenting on the Guinness opinion - I would be interested to see how they came up with that top 5. You're right in that it always comes down to opinion not fact though.
I just happen to be looking at the Guiness Book of World Records and noticed the gamers edition. The top 5 surprised me so I thought it may be interesting for others too.
I agree that for best games of certain generations may vary, these are in fact the top 5 games of all time in sales. If they are top 5 games in sales, then they are the most liked "bought" 5 games of all time.
I do love some Mario Kart, but I would not put these as my personal top 5 of all time that "I Like".
Sorry if it seemed like my opinion on top 5. But its not. Its Guiness Book of World Records facts.
