GTA IV 360 sales almost double that of PS3 for 2008

According to the NPD annual software charts for 2008, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV 360 outsold GTA IV PS3 by nearly 2:1.

The Xbox 360's installbase in the U.S. is double that of the PS3's installbase in the U.S., so why is it a big deal that GTA4 sold less on the PS3?

However, If I'm not mistaken, the PS3 version of GTA4 had a higher attach rate.

But I have to admit that I am a "little" surprised that GTA4 on the PS3 didn't manage to hit the 2 million unit mark in the U.S. in 2008, but it still came close. I bought GTA4 on release, but haven't played it since Last May because I just got bored with it.... I hope the next GTA is much better.

All the reviews said the game was one of the best ever. Yet when I took it home and played it, that was not what went through my mind.

I played it, beat it, and I haven't played it since. It was good but not great. It felt like less of a game than GTA:SA was and that was a huge let down for me.

so more ppl actually bought GTA4 for the PS3 than they did for the 360 and the attach rate proves that.

Thinks back to the mid-late 90s gaming days when gamers didnt care one bit about sales, attach rates, price drops or any of that non sense. What ever happened to the good fanboy wars?.. Like Street Fighter 2 is better than Mortal Kombat 2.. Sub Zero is better than Scorpion or Mega Man X2 is better than Mega Man X.. Mario is better than Sonic.. Of course the 360 sold more copies of GTA4. PS3 had better games to play unlike the 360, fans lost interest in GTA4 after it was downgraded to fit on a DVD, the reviewers got payed off and said it was the best game ever yet it's the worst 3D GTA game in the series.

After a disappointment like GTA4 I doubt anyone will care about the next GTA as it will be as mediocre as the last one probably with even less to do after you beat the story (if that is even possible).

As for your arguement, I remember Sony fans saying that it would sell more on the ps3 regardless of install base, that true fans would get the ps3 version because it was 'better' some how. That the xbox version would be limited by dvd and of lesser quality(spurring on ps3 purchases). And that the ps3 version is the 'true' version because the playstation is where the gta 3, vc and SA all sold so well. I ignored your point because there was nothing for me to argue against as you'd already painted both sides of the story in your skewed light.

Most, normal thinking Playstation fans conceded even before release that it would sell more on XB 2:1. That was the general concensus.

For Most Xbox fans the 2:1 wasn't humiliating enough, even when we admitted it, so they would banter 3:1. Thats the way I remember it anyway.

I dont know why this has to be argued about now, when we've all known this from the start, and in world wide figures PS3 has probably exceede expectations.

GTA IV is a great game...The best I played last year standing right there next to MGS4...I just think it's hilarious when it was first announced that it was coming to 360 at how many Sony fanboys wept and pissed a moaned about it being a PS title first and foremost...Well, I guess that's not really the case, is it?

Funny how attach rate is so often used by 360 stalwarts unless it suddenly doesn't suit them...

The real story here is that the attach rate was higher for the PS3 (especially if you look for world wide figures) - despite the fact that MS paid huge sums for exclusive content and consistently promoted that theirs was the only 'full experience' as a result.

Paying a fortune in this way and then finding you have less attach rate cannot be a win in anyones eyes - surely not even the most hardened delusional would think otherwise?

Incidently, I played and enjoyed it on the 360, but if you can look at figures objectively, sales of this on PS3 were damn good...

PS3 owner and i brought GTA4 and yes it was gimped so it would fit on the XFLOPS crappy dvd format. But the only reason it sold more on the XFLOP is the exclusive DLC wich thier still waiting for LOL. Had there been no exclusive DLC i doubt the sales figures would be the same for the XFLOP.
