MSNBC: Top 5 most anticipated games of 2009

MSNBC writes:
Your 401k is gone. The price of your home has crashed. Your paycheck is in doubt. Yeah, 2009 is shaping up to be a great year, thanks to the recession.

But chin up, readers. With hard work, a little bit of luck, and a healthy dose of escapism, we'll get through this. So when the going gets tough, look to these standout games to forget it all: the most anticipated video games of 2009.

Not one Sony game. KILLZONE2 is the most anticipated game. Look at the degrees on this site. Its quite clear.

Nice try MSnbc.

butterfinger5587d ago

Not only was there no PS3 exclusives, but they threw Wheelman and Punch-Out on there. If I was a gamer and got most of my news from MSNBC, I would be very disappointed with the way 2009 is shaping up. I mean, they couldn't even throw Ninja Blade on there or something? lol.

joydestroy5587d ago

that's the lamest list ever. RE5 and FF are the only ones worthy on there.

Nineball21125587d ago

I knew KZ2 wouldn't be on there before I even clicked on the link.

MSnbc. 'nuff said.

mintaro5587d ago

Omg! No way! They have a different opinion then us! That means they must be wrong!

ericnellie5587d ago

I normally disagree with you but this time I've got to agree with you. Killzone 2 and God of War should have definitely been on that list. This has to be one of the worst lists I've seen in a long time =)

Pennywise5587d ago

Mintaro, get real man. How can you deny KZ2 to be one of the most anticipated games coming in 09?

Its not like they dont feel that way. Its more like they would get in trouble if they wrote KZ2 onto the list.

kapedkrusader5587d ago

...are you kiddin' me? You honestly don't find it suspect that Killzone 2 is not on the list or that Wheelman "is"? Common sense overrules opinion.

RebornSpy5587d ago

1. Resident Evil 5
2. Halo 3: ODST
3. Killzone 2
4. Infamous
5. Half-Life 2: Episode 3(not confirmed but probable)

That Wheelman game looks cool, but only because it had Vin Diesel in it.

mintaro5587d ago

Maybe they were forced not to write it, or...maybe they just dont see what the big deal is about. Is that not possible?

I for one am the same, sure it looks great and stays with the tride and true gameplay of baddassery and shooting, but it just doesnt apeal to me.

Is that so impossible?

chaosatom5587d ago

yes, it is impossible.

otherwise they need to change the title "Top 5 most anticipated games of 2009 for the consoles we have"

BattleAxe5586d ago (Edited 5586d ago )

@ Mintaro

I would find it hard to get excited about Killzone 2 if I didn't have a PS3 either. Don't worry, you'll get your HALO: ODST soon enough...............

mintaro5586d ago (Edited 5586d ago )

I love how since I dont like Killzone I must like Halo. Its funny how in depth you guys will go to make your opinion fact.

But I digress, Killzone simply doesnt apeal to me, I played the beta and it was fun, and looked pretty. I've just had enough of shooters. And all the "supposed" innovation this game brings.

:)

lelo5586d ago

"Not one Sony game. KILLZONE2 is the most anticipated game. Look at the degrees on this site. Its quite clear."

This site does not count ... it's full of PS3 fanboys... they are biassed.

spectyre5586d ago

There is nothing wrong with you not wanting a particular game... but you are not a news outlet. The wording of the article makes it seem like he represents the general "gaming consensus". Now, I only own the PS3 so if I worked for news outlet, it would be ethical for me to write a story about the "top 5 anticipated games" and leave out all 360 exclusives?
MSNBC did the same thing with the election. They reported a story that Sarah Palin didn't know that Africa was a continent...Then they aired a retraction and apology after the election was over.

0verdrive5586d ago (Edited 5586d ago )

wow long time since my last post

but im going to come out of hiding to say that this list is a goddam joke. seriously? wheelman? i havent even heard of that game. perhaps a bit of nostalgia hit them with punchout, but i mean...cmon. and ffxiii has been confirmed to release in 2010 in us and eu, so unless this is japanese msnbc, they need to get their facts straight. and yes, kz2 def should be up there somewhere, if not first, in my, and most people opinions, at least.

sonarus5587d ago

lol @ wheelman. One man's most anticipated game is not the same for another.

fjburgos5587d ago

MSNBC please go make news do not post garbage trying to know about gamming you clearly don't know nothing about gamming the only think aboout gamming that you really know is how to bash sony.

PPnoPP5587d ago

Awesome list of games i must agree.

IzKyD13315586d ago

Enjoy Punchout and Wheelman.....we are stuck with God of War 3, Killzone 2, Infamous, Uncharted 2, GT 5, FF v13, R&C Future sequel...../sarcasm

BLUR1115586d ago

The list shows games for 2009 NOT 2010

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ57d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia57d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware73057d ago (Edited 57d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing6957d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y57d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex57d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y56d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

Tody_ZA31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972132d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus132d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda131d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B130d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981131d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot131d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda130d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot130d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy130d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay130d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12132d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay130d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB131d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
