Sony: PS3 'still in early adopter phase

The PlayStation 3 is "still in its early adopter phase", Sony has claimed, despite the console being out for over two years.

Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said that the kind of person who was interested in the PS3 was "tech-oriented" and that for them, the console's main appeal was its "multi-functionality".

1) your biggest titles got out sold. gears caught up to MGS4 sells in one month what MGS4 did since the beginning of the summer,

2)LBP had to be bundled just to sell as does all sony exclusive games,

3)the 360 caught up and pass the ps3 sales in one month what the ps3 has been doing since the beginning of the year,

4)360 is making a profit on their systems that even if sony drops the price MS can follow and drop theirs without hurting their profits. where as sony couldn't do it.

oh if you what to go with "oh MS is desperate cause they have to drop the price to sell their system" just remember sony did it with the ps3 within it's first 6 months of release.(which is unheard of) no systen i remember ever did that and i have been gaming since intelevision and atari 2600 came out.

I hate to piss on your parade or even start anything here, but two years is not early adopter phase when the average prime of a console life is the first 5 years for early adopters (in Europe it is 2-3 months shy of being out for 2 years now).

This cycle might be longer, but still with the branding Sony had for 2 console generations and with the expanded market they should have done better. Although, I am impressed that they did as well as they did with the high price tag primarily thanks to Europe and Japan. PS3 no doubt has a good game lineup for 2009 (if they all come out considering Sony's history), but unless they drop that price they are scr*wed!

Personally, I hope PS3 and 360 stay neck in neck this whole generation. That way they can put pressure on each other to outdo each other all the time. This can only be good for consumers. The only one I wish did terrible is Wii, because it is untouchable and really doesn't have any quality games I want to play at all....

Why would PS2 owners automatically move to PS3? They don't even have backwards compatibility. Seems Sony is more keen on Second life type Home betas that actually improving backwards computability and making the in-game live anywhere near as good as the xbox live.

Sony has a long-term plan that they're sticking to. You can't fault them for that.

Microsoft who are sooo eager just to 'beat' Sony on the other hand, seem to not have much of a long term plan established. Thinka bout it. They speed up everything losing quality along the way (next generation optical drive etc.) and faulty hardware costing them a futher 1 billion, a tenth of the Australian bail out package.......

They then year to year are forced to drop their price.........to lower than Wii (THE WII PEOPLE) prices.

They then strip their console down to the BARE minimums.........a running machine (arcade version) in order to scavage for sales.

How can they POSSIBLY survive for another 8-7 years?

The PS3 has all this brand new technology with continuously update firmwares with a MASSIVE mark up STILL available to them. Because they stick to their long-term business plan they have a viable investment in Blu-Ray, the PS3 and the PS4.

Look at the sales now of a console that is nearly double the price of it's competition.........that's mighty impressive. Imagine when it halves, or even takes 100 dollars off it's price tag. They have the ability to do it with the mark up they have, but what about Microsoft? When Sony does that, what else do they have? Games? Exclusive Downloadable Content? Free Controller? 3 Free Controllers? Games with 5 Discs? 5 Free Controllers? I think you get the point.

Sony has its enourmous through starting investing early enourmousss collection of first party studios producing games like Heavy Rain, Infamous, Little Big Planet, Resistance, Jak And Daxter, Uncharted, Wipeout, Socom, MAG, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 5, Killzone 2, GOD OF WAR 3 etc. plus it's blu-ray, new technology and price cuts available to them.

That's what I call a smart strategy.

The price (for MOST PEOPLE) is still high. Now people like me who saw the extensive value the system withheld, and what its future offerings would be, opted for one rather soon after launch (I got mine in May of '07). However, even as a (very) happy owner of the PS3, I still think that looking at the market as it stands, the price is *still* a bit too high.

The reason I say this is because most consumers in this current market just want a reasonably priced game system. The ones who realize what the PS3 can do, and what they can take advantage of with the system, are relatively in the minority. Just look at how well the X360 is selling at 199 to see what most consumers are looking for, for crying out loud. They don't care if they system is gimped of features or accessories; they are buying the system because they can get a (somewhat) HD system for 200 dollars!

Once Sony drops the price, even by 100 dollars so the system sits at 299, I feel that we will see a huge spike in sales that will carry the system even further into this generation. People already know what the PS3 is capable of when compared to the competition, and what it offers. They just aren't prepared to pay the premium when what they are buying, when it all boils down, is a video games console.

People don't count pixels like most of the fanboys on the internet. In their eyes, games look the same between the PS3 and the 360, and then the only thing standing in the way of a purchase is which one is cheaper.

PS3 is just basically a blu ray player which has a few games... 360 and wii are where the gamers (casual and hardcore) are at... PS3 is for tech heads
