I think the only type of games that can gets away with it would be sport games, having those sponsors ads on the side like on real life.
But don't put freaking Doritos ads in Star Wars or something, it breaks the immersion. If it is a pop-up ads, then big no.

Airship Syndicate has announced major changes coming to Wayfinder with the Echoes update: the action RPG will be playable offline. Before the end of the year, it will also launch on Xbox Series S and X.
they should have thought of that before they sold mtx during early access.
"There will be major changes, and major improvements, but we have no plans for it to disappear like so many online-only games we’ve all played and loved. We think Wayfinder can be something special, and be around to play forever"
I hope this means they'll add an offline-mode or have an end-of-support plan for the game to continue to be playable, like Gran Turismo Sport and not like The Crew.
