I'll be interested to learn more about their PC support. Are they planning on porting some of their games over to PC to allow people to use the headset there? Or are they going to just open it up to allow us to run Steam VR games on it? If it's the latter, then they will lose out on a ton of software sales going this route.

I guess we will know more later in the year.

They are testing PC support (Steam).

we don't know what "PC support" means here. It's still very vague.

My realistic guess is we will actually get an app on the PS5, like Steam Link, that will allow the PC to wirelessly stream games to the PSVR2 via the PS5.

The USB-C requirements of the headset means that you can't just connect it to any old USB-C port on your computer and could potentially require some sort of special USB dongle you'd have to buy in order to make it work. Seems unlikely.

My 6 year old desktop and my 4 year old laptop both have usbc...

Petebloodyonion78d ago

You won't get an app on PS5 because having the Steam apps on PS5 would make the entire Steam library available on PS5 (something that Sony is against).

What you can expect is your PSVR2 will now be discoverable on PC and will be compatible with Steam VR just like Quest.

Now related to USB-C you just need a standard USB3.0 to USB-C cable.

Gotta love the disagree vote on my comment... "Nuh-uh, your old PC doesn't have USBC!" Hate to break it to you, but it does. My laptop from 2019 has thunderbolt 3/USBC as well. It's common on pretty much all computers these days.

@Petebloodyonion - I'm sure there would be a way to restrict what games show up via the app to limit it to only games with VR support or something. I'm not saying it would be the same Steam Link app we see on other devices, it could be customized.

@fr0sty - it has nothing to do with it being a USB-C port. The USB-C port on the PS5 is a Virtualink port (Basically combines DisplayPort + power + USB 3.1 data). It's not just about the transfer speed of the USB-C, it also needs to support the other things. A standard USB-C port on your computer won't necessarily do that.

I’m really struggling on the logic behind the idea they would lose out on a ton of software sales by allowing open psvr2 support on PC. How, where & why??

crazyCoconuts78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Yeah, that's surprising. Two things come to mind. Optimistically, it means they must have a profit margin on the hardware, so they make a little money there. Pessimistically, they're not making much money on the software side due to a low install base and are trying to eek as much out of this financial failure as possible.

Not if the goal is to port a lot of software. VR really can't thrive in a walled garden.

Very cool they are testing out PC support with this.

fr0sty78d ago

I'm more interested in using it with non-game PC apps, like microdose VR, unreal engine 5, etc.

crazyCoconuts79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

PC support? Wow I was wrong about this one. I didn't expect Sony to go down this route. I guess, like controllers, they're making enough profit on these to just sell it for the hardware vs. it being a "platform".
Anyway, I'm stoked as I have Steam VR games I own and haven't been able to play since I sold my Rift S.

Good franchise the zombie army games 😊

Abnor_Mal78d ago

Definitely a good get, which leaves me to wonder why we didn’t get the last Sniper Elite VR game. I was hoping we would get that and the first for PSVR2, also that Medal of Honor VR game from a few years ago.

I bought this last week in the sale but I was so sick after playing it for 30 minutes. Suppose it was good that I was physically sick as after throwing up it only took another 30 mins to feel better. Where as usually it takes me a little longer to feel sick from VR but I’m not usually physically sick but I’ll usually feel awful for about 4-8 hours after.
