The first Killzone game never met lofty expectations of dethroning Xbox’s Halo, but if any game needs a PS5 remake, this is the one.
The Killzone series has been dormant since Shadow Fall, but a live service style for its multiplayer might just be exactly what it needs to succeed.
It will fail as a live service. An attractive reboot is required. Sony needs a strong first party FPS.
They don't need a first party fps. Outside of Cod, they aren't as popular as they were last gen and definitely not as popular as they were in the PS3/360 era.
COD is not the be-all and end-all of FPS games. Sony will only have it for a couple of years as the deal is more or less set in stone. Sony needs to work on bringing back Resistance/Killzone/MAG. They're sitting on so many IPs and yet they much prefer to chase the cinematic crowd or be an overall nuisance when things are changing. What did they expect when they play the money game against a much more wealthier company to can outpsend you when neccessary.
The "Trying to turn us into another Nintendo" should have been seen as compliment or as another way to thrive.
Pedantic91
Playing the money game do you mean the advertising rights to cod
Those Same rights ms bought first back during the 360. Ms has had 20 years to get it together and they haven't. All I have to say is who's next ms couldn't handle it even worse since they had more money then nin and Sony. They closed and or ruined so many studios. What is their issue
I think they could seriously improve the fps genre in ways they dont even know.
Imagine those set peice moments that theyre making in 3rd person translated and designed for 1st person.
I think they could compete at a certain extent with CoD. Ive wanted another killzone and resistance long before the activ bliizard deal came around. Not to compete with CoD but to give great single player fps campaigns...this is sorely lacking right now and I hope Sonys sees it eventually.
Best careful what you wish for.
Overwatch 2 is another bad live service game.
Once a developer and publisher have burnt most of the goodwill of their playerbase an entire franchise can be destroyed.
Overwatch 2 despite the rough launch and bugs is hugely successful and crazy popular.
Not to mention Killzone is already dead so if a live service fails it what? Goes back to doing what it is now, being dead. Thus Killzone has absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Hell no.
Just remake KZ2 keep gameplay the same and it'll thrive, I'm sure of it.
No it won't because if they just released a real multiplayer game and not a live service in 2022/2023 people would be whining two weeks after launch that the game was abandoned and "sent out to die."
People hate the terms "Live Service" and "Games as a Service," but in reality that's the only thing people want to play.
Not at all. I currently play no live service games. I did try fallout 76. It became annoying when they wanted money for more storage. I probably played about 15 hours or so.
@shinoff2183
I appreciate that individuals here and there don't, but if you look at how people react to multiplayer games now, it's clear that people want a live service, even if they don't want the publisher to call it that.
Look at Battlefield V. Tha game had maps released here and there for about a year and half, which is actually pretty typical for a Battlefield game (only 4 got map packs later in it's life cycle). Yet the entire narrative around that game now is that the devs abandoned it.
Or look at Red Dead Online. People talk about that game being "dead," and the community even had a funeral. Which you'd think would mean that the servers were down (that's what it used to mean), but it actually just meant the game was just being maintained in a status quo, not as a live service.
Heck, people's complaints about Halo are even more evidence. People used to play Halo multiplayer to have fun. Now people can't see the point in playing the game if there aren't new skins to earn.
Exactly!! If you don't believe what's being said, I dare you to explore the most successful ongoing games. It seems like people just want everything to stay the same with no progression. I may not play, Destiny, Fortnite, FF14, League, Genshin or the like but I can see the opportunity they add to the industry.
Honestly, people dont even understand what live service is at this point. They just hate the term.
What exactly would an FPS in 2022 that is NOT live service be?
No new maps released consistently
No new guns
Maybe a map pack at some point that completely breaks the player base/matchmaking
No constant balance / tuning updates
Thats what a live service FPS is at the end of the day. Anything else like battle passes or microtransactions are the funding methods
@JEECE
Halo Infinite MP was released as a live service game, though. it's starved off contents unlike other live service games thus the backlash is justified imo.
oh hell no!!!!, look at Halo it sure is thriving lol, Killzone only needs a good story, heck you could even leave the graphics visual style of Shadowfall cause up to this day still looks freaking amazing.
It was my favourite in the franchise to date because it was a departure from the drab and dreary original colour profile the city keeps were still some of the best you'll see on ps4 to this day
343i can't develop their own games in their own right and outsource when possible. I doubt Guerrilla Games would make the same mistakes but I don't see Killzone being a live service game adding much to anything other then Sony's bottom line.
Shadowfall was such a drop off from KZ 2/3. I wish they could remake KZ2; with the weight feel also.
Why does everything have to be a work in progress approach now?
Just give us the campaign and the multi-player. Complete multi-player. With plenty of maps and a handful of game modes. Then come out with some map and weapon packs a couple times a year. That's all it needs. That's all the previous KZ games needed that people loved. That's all the Battlefield games needed up through BF4 that people loved.
Why change the formula? Oh that's right. It's easier to release an unfinished and unpolished game, charge full price for it along with expensive dlc packs, then continue adding things and charging half the price of the game for them that should have been included at launch in the first place.
It blows my mind that fans let this crap get this bad.
Time has changed, publishers are pushing GaaS games cous theyr is a ton of money to earn. And as long as gamers will buy those games and service packs and DLC and in game purchases they will keep making them and milk them like Kingdom comes.
Oh I know. Everything you said is true. I just can't believe it's gotten to this point. At no point have the majority of gamers stood up and said "no more". They just keep giving their money. I mean, if DLC is already being sold at launch, then what do these people think that means? It means that content was ready to go and should have been included in the game, not held off separately to sell.
The new CoD is a perfect example. It's honestly the best CoD has been in a very long time, as a game. But there are like 10 DLC "operator packs" that give you a new character skin, and couple guns, and some weapon charms and calling cards. And they all cost anywhere from $10-$20 a piece. Not to mention the Battle Pass that let's you earn more items like that. This stuff is all already in the game but locked behind a pay wall. On a game that already costs full price lol. Battle Pass is $30. Half the price of the game. And this is just the FIRST Battle Pass. The amount of money to get all that stuff is hundreds of dollars. And this is just in the first month of the game launching lol.
It's completely unbelievable.
New killzone single player campaign accompanied by a remaster of 2 and 3 would be great.
Live service…not for me.
God I hope the Activision deal goes through so Sony has to stop resting on their laurels and actually start competing. They're so used to leading the industry that they don't really care to be better anymore.
They bought Bungie to make a bunch of Fortnite clones hoping one of them will stick. They said Bungie has experience in this field and they want in on that market. They've said all of this...
Thats so wrong, the ones that where sitting on theyr laurels for manymany years and where not realy competing and now that Nadala is screaming: "Lets compete".
And the answer from MS is by doing that by byuing complete Publishers,
Thats not competing that doing what MS has been doing for decades, and is theyr DNA, when you cant win buy out the competition.
I'm not saying Microsoft is the good guy here lol. I'm saying I want Sony to care more. They're just as bad with all the anti consumer shit theyve been doing this gen along with all the exclusivity deals with everyone and making the games run better on playstation. It's just as bad as Microsoft buying publishers.
Lol come on, nobody cares about feckin Killzone it's a seriously terrible IP where 4 of the 5 games were worse than horse shit. GG have made two excellent games since and should move on from this garbage.
And if Sony wants an FPS they should create something new, not KZ or other mediocre tripe like Resistance. They have the devs to make something fresh and awesome plus they have Deviation
There is alot of people including myself who care very much for Killzone. You don't speak for us or for all.
A new fps is definitely welcomed but a revisit back to a new Resistance & a Killzone game would be nice as well.
What everyone is failing to see is the potential in the Helgast Universe being built on top of a Destiny formula. Perhaps this is the reason why Bungie was such a pivitol addition to their stable of developers. We need to stop focusing on the idea of "live service" alone when there is validity in its implementation to cement sustainable profitability.
What made me enjoy Killzone 1 & 2 was the enemy. They invaded earth in the first. We fought back and took it to them. Hellghast has a Nazi mentality to them and it was alluring to fight a new but familiar foe.
Fascist is the word, and the Helghast invaded Vekta in the first game but it is an earth like planet
I won’t argue with someone who has a Helghast avatar. When I played the original, I must have been 10
Psvr2 could use killzone as a excellent showcase piece.
We really don't need a live service looter shooter with a killzone wrapper we already have far to many of these types of games.
Yes, FPS, driving games etc, belong on VR.
Firewall was/is very good, and the new one is the only FPS I'm interested in.
A new Socom wouldn't be good like the old ones, it would be designed around Operators and selling Microtransactions like Rainbow Six Siege.
Nope. Just make an excellent brand new PS5 Killzone game with Bungie at the development helm.
As long as they take the Killzone2 formula. Adding actual weight to the characters and guns, the fluid evolving game modes, and the griddy industrial Helghast maps.
People crack me up talking about Sony bringing back all of these old franchises that no one was really buying and playing when they were around. I mean seriously if these franchises were such huge blockbusters why did Sony allow them to go dormant?
Play games and stop trying to be the CEO or President.
Resistance and Killzone all sold millions of copies with each installment. But they couldn’t compete with the tens of millions of PlayStation players that bought call of duty because it said call of duty on the box. Both Resistance 3 (2011) and KZ3 (2011) sold less than their predecessors. KZSF (2013) also didn’t have the spirit of the first 3 games either but retained the attention to detail the series had.
I agree with what you are saying. It is not that these games were bad and yes they moved some units, but to act like they can just replace COD with them is wishful thinking. They WILL need to respond in some way but maybe it’ll be some new IP that’s a FPS.
If you mean like destiny...hell no. Killzone needs a masterful reboot. Preferably by devs who love the franchise. Then use an open forum with players who equally know and love killzone to shoot ideas around.
Or you know...maybe, im just shooting the shit here, a good game??
I know thats an outrageous proposition but crazier things have happened.
At this point, is there anything that can beat or do on par as CoD? We’ve seen many FPS tried over the past 15 years and not a single one have succeeded in dethroning CoD. I am not a big fan of CoD, to me CoD is just another madden with guns. Same thing with a different paint.
Let Bungie take over Killzone and maybe live service would work, otherwise, just no.
I can hear that Killzone kill chirp now, good times.
Killzone built around KZ 2 MP has so much potential. Character classes skill based can be expanded with inner team bonus co-op.
Hostage/civilian rescue.
Propaganda drop/push & destroy (creating boosts)
Area clearance & defence fort creation.
Ship crash rescue/plunder
Drop ships & tank AI on battlefield
With the future of Killzone in question, it leaves a hole that might not be easily filled in PlayStation's first party line up.
Same goes with Resistance another great title that has been shelved.
I don't think these games are gone. Also insomniac has been teasing resistance for over a year so I expect to hear about that franchise soon or sometime this year
*Had been shelved, though most likely not anymore with all the Insomniac teasing.
Why would it be a Cod clone? A new Resistance would be a.. Resistance clone with Resistance style gameplay. This is Insomniac, they don't do ripoffs.
lol Insomniac don't do ripoff and Spiderman is copy/paste of batman even some of the side quests. I have not played it myself but my friend was saying its shameless how much copy/paste insomniac has done from batman games.
Must have missed the sections in Batman Arkham where hes web swinging from area to area or juggling a whole group of enemies in the air at once.
“... my friend was saying its shameless how much copy/paste insomniac has done from batman games.”
He wasn’t around for Spider-man on PS2 I take it? Parker was juggling back when Bruce was still struggling with Dark Tomorrow.

The lack of 1st party multiplayer titles is shocking, i was bleak even on PS4 compared to PS3:
Killzone 2,3
Warhawk, Starhawk
Socom Confrontation and Socom 4
Motorstorm 1,2
MAG
Twisted Metal
Resistance 1,2
MGO2
TLOU (multiplayer)
Uncharted 2,3 (multiplayer)
The list goes on and on.
I get that they are great at 1st party single player experiences, but the appeared abandonment of multiplayer enabled titles (or even news of, for that matter) is pretty miserable.
Unfortunately Sony would make good multiplayer titles, but people on Playstation would largely ignore them in favor of more generic third party stuff, so as much as I miss their output, I can't blame them for focusing on games people actually buy.
This is exactly why I dropped off Playstation after watching the PS4 launch. Almost all of those games were completely non-existent on PS4, with the exception of a very mediocre Killzone game, and a God of War game, Uncharted game and TLOU2 game that came out towards the end of the PS4 generation.
Last gen I switched to Xbox for a different experience since Playstation started charging for online, which leveled the playing field with Xbox Live, and didn't have any of the games I liked (most of which are in your list). For all of Xbox's faults, I was able to experience the 360 generation games through backwards compatibility, plus I was able to play the newer gears games and Halo games, which were a lot of fun. Titanfall was pretty awesome in the early Xbox One days also.
No it doesn't leave a hole it makes room for something else. Cool doom and gloom article though.
They can't work on new games and try new things? I doubt Killzone is gone forever, but I'd rather they work on new potential franchises, and when they do go back to Killzone, they'll have fresh, new ideas.
I'll gladly trade Killzone for more Horizon, but now that Insomniac is officially under PlayStation, I'd really like a Resistance sequel to make up for the awful third entry.
It's ok to let games rest for a while, definitely better than annual lacklustre games.
Hopefully it will return with a bang someday.
Sony are no strangers to starting new franchises so they might have something cooking...
I do gotta say that playstation is missing some fps ip exclusives lately.
They've all been 3rd person...generally.
That's not to say that microsoft has it any better ....yet. halo is dried up and they've done so much damage to the ip with halo guardians...not sure it will recover. With the new acquisitions they may be able to come up with better 1st and 3rd person ip
Right cuz milking it like halo and gears is the way to go right? Why do people struggle to let a franchise go?
There was only 1 halo on Xbox and halo 5 is supported like crazy. It would be nice.
forcing developers to constantly work on a IP also kills creativity and leads to less then stellar results. Just look at what MS did to Bungie with Halo
The last Killzone was 7 years ago...that hole has been there for awhile and hasn't hurt Sony. Marketing deals with COD and Destiny has been filling that hole adequately. I don't want any current Sony studio working on a Killzone as well...if they open a new studio or 3rd party and throw the killzone IP at them that would be fine.
I think I would rather have Black 2. That game was a technological marvel for it's time.
It was replaced with Horizon-in my opinion-a much better option. So that hole was filled with something else.
Yeah Killzone was ok, never really understood the hype. Horizon on the other hand is amazing. I did enjoy kz mercenary and liberation though.
Killzone's future on PS5 and future consoles looks almost non-existent as Sony has shut down the Killzone.com website, making it inaccessible.
I guess they can only work on so many blockbusters at one time. Then again, making the website inaccessible doesn't have to spell doom, they might be giving it an overhaul for a future unveiling and don't want people thinking about it in the meantime. We just don't know until we get official word.
Fans need to speak against this.. Series has so much potential and ps3 versions are considered by many as the best online experience on consoles.
Sony just lost credit here, from a big killzone fan 😠
This. Taking the site down just means they didn't want to pay to maintain a site with no traffic. Doesn't mean the franchise is dead. Just means they likely have no near term plans. They still own the domain.
i agree with Sony ...series had potential..but never appealed to gamers that much (me included).... Sony keep Guerilla for other projects
Agreed to both Saying Jin & Fist4achin.
I'd take a remaster of both franchise's in the meantime though if thats OK please 👍👍
KZ2 was one of very few games I spent extensive time playing online. It is a shame this IP is retiring. But with Guerilla working on Horizon then onto, likely, another new IP once they're done with Horizon.... Also KZ isn't a game that ever seemed to realize it's potential in sales. It was the pre-Destiny Destiny where people loved to hate it but those who played it and enjoyed it loved it.
Hopefully in the future they revisit the franchise and give a good development team the chance to create a new entry. Though only if they bring it back to the atmosphere and world of 2-3. Shadowfall was a solid game but personally I see Killzone in that dark gritty world filled with ash and smoke.
I hardly play MP 1st shooters and I spend a ridiculous ammount of time on killzone 2, i like 3 but didnt liked it as much as 2 and Shadowfall was meh
The last one was a horrible game ( in my opinion of course). I fully expected KZ to return as a launch title though. 1-3 were well recieved.
its funny because Shadow Fall was my first KZ game (PS4 was my first Sony console). So I didn't mind it so much. Only other one I played was the Vita title. Would have been nice to have gotten a remastered trilogy of sorts. Maybe someday.
@Neonridr
I missed the 1st KZ. Got wrecked in KZ2 MP. I enjoyed KZ3 but couldn't get into 4's MP. I do remember being wowed by it's single player visuals.
The warzone mode on KZ2 and the 8 player co-op pm resistance 2 were the 2 modes I actually invested a lot of time to play. Sony really needs to reboot both FPS and instead of chasing battle royal or COD crowd just focus on what made past games special
great memories from ps3 really great. it was one of them games that made you proud to be a ps3 owner multiplayer was fab
Nooooooo.
my guess that is they have another shooter up their sleeve, because they cannot just rely on the 3rd parties every year with cod/battlefield
not to be a downer, but, why can't they? There's tons of mp shooters on the market and cod is ridiculously popular to the point it sways unit sales depending on who has marketing rights.
I loved killzone 2, the whole game was great aside from the last boss which took me a couple tries to beat because of how cheap he was. Mp was unique and fun. Then they made it more like cod and it lost it's way, in fact, the same thing happened to Resistance. They went after the cod fad and it ruined their unique takes imo.
They could, I suppose, but Killzone was Sony's exclusive shooter franchise, and it was a lot of fun. I think Sony should have their own shooter franchise whether it's Killzone or something else.
Sony obviously has a lot of talent they could harness and direct toward a great shooter franchise.
Yeah, Resistance 1 and 2 multiplayer was awesome.
Resistance 3 multiplayer was ass.
I have the Resistance 2 platinum trophy.
It's very sad but let's hope they have been cooking something up with Resistance.
Insomniac the developer are making Spiderman and ratchet and clank now. Maybe won't have enough people or manpower to make 3 games.
I think playstation could do with a new killzone to be honest. Or something totally new.
Gurilla games who makes killzone have expanded massively in the last 4 years so that can't just be to work on horizon they must have something else up their sleeves
Killzone was really an answer to Halo for why shooter fans should play on PS2 nowadays I can't think of any exclusive shooters that sell consoles.
Most shooters going crossplay to mean more people are buying them then ever before because I can play with friends regardless if platform.
So I think third party shooters have really stolen the market I don't think another Killzone or Halo will change that they just don't represent value like cod does these days if you avoid the mtx you can get a lot out of your base game
Agreed, but for the best KZ days, Call of Duty was already stealing a bunch of the FPS sales and player base when the series was in its prime. With Shadow Fall and the original fans that loved 1,2, and 3 felt disjointed as Shadow Fall wasn’t the gritty war torn atmosphere of KZ 1-3, and took place decades after in a time of ‘peace’ between the galactic factions. Many KZ fans including myself felt Shadow Fall was made to appeal to the typical “your the hero” FPS fan that 1-3 didn’t portraying the struggles of any other soldier in war. I would love to see the ‘real’ KZ of 1-3 and Mercenaries return
2 had great multiplayer, and while the campaign was nothing special, it did nail the atmosphere. However, 1 and 3 were mediocre, and Shadow Fall was a train wreck. After Horizon, I see no reason for them to return to Killzone.
I personally just want a remake of Killzone 1 and remasters of 2, 3 and Mercenary. Wasn't a fan of Shadow Fall but it was a gorgeous game.
This is fine but Sony does need a flagship FPS, well....(need) is a strong word as we have tons of killer exclusives. I'll rephrase to, I would like a killer app fps, with that sony magic sprinkled into it.
That sucks! The story was phenomenal! They can't leave us with a cliff hanger with Shadowfall.
I loved the killzone games and really hoped for a reboot. From a business perspective it is understandable. Killzone 2, 3 and shadow fall sold around 4 million each. Horizon sold more than 4 times that amount already.
I loved all the killzone games and would really like to see a PS5 remaster of them all even if no new instalments are added.
I wonder whether Sony perceive that the IP is a bit dated for modern standards.
I loved Killzone2 and 3 but Shadowfall was awful. They tried to copy COD and face planted. Killzone worked with you as a soldier in a war not as a special ops lone wolf.
My favorite shooter of all time is Killzone 2. I loved the campaign and it was the first online shooter that I actually enjoyed. I've invested hundreds of hours online. I hope that they work on something in future because I was looking forward to a PS5 comeback of the franchise.
Damn...well. That sucks? I was hoping for a return on the PS5 tbh. Maybe sometime later..the Helghast are too cool to be forgotten lol.
I don’t think killzone shadowfall sold that well so this was to be expected... they are letting guerrilla make the games that will make the most money.. for me I would prefer a killzone to horizon zero Dawn sequel but I think I am in the minority if you go by the sales figures.
I feel you, I was disappointed with the Horizon reveal as I don’t enjoy RPGs and dialogue select. Wasn’t interested in playing Horizon but a coworkers word of mouth sold me to try it. IMO it was a mistake to start it. I first played last February and I’m about 15hrs in over the course of 11 months. I’ll finish it one day, as I like to get all the trophies in the games I play. But HZD has been a struggle for me to play from an enjoyability standpoint. Herman Hulst is now no longer with Guerilla Games as he got the call up from Sony. I can’t see myself purchasing Guerillas Games in the future. Hurt the fans that grew the studio, but also we helped grow GG to attract a wider fan base with Horizon. Victims of success, so to say. It is what it is, but I won’t buy the studios games from now on as they don’t appeal to me
Sony aren’t afraid to bin franchises that don’t deliver sales results. Anyone remember The Order 1886? I actually really enjoyed it but sales killed it dead.
I remember it, and I enjoyed it but it was a very short game with near zero replay ability. Ready at Dawn had a great showcase of what they can create with 1886 with story and graphics, and probably learned to make future games less linear if it’s at the technical level of 1886. All it offers in memory is an interesting setting, pretty graphics, and an easy platinum trophy
Not really a surprise. I don't know if Guerilla Games is large enough to develop Horizon AND a new Killzone title. Maybe someday.
Oh come on. KZ has so much untapped potential. KZ2 was a really great game. Looks like this will go the way of Syphon Filter and Legend of Dragoon.
BRING BACK WILD ARMS!!!
As an isometric turn based RPG with realtime platforming elements "Of Course".
Why? That’s a hole in their library that needs filling. I’m getting burnt out on open-world. If Hulst don’t want it, give it to Bluepoint.
I wouldn’t be so sure. There are many reasons it could be taken down, all speculation though. I wouldn’t count out killzone based on a website. It could be something as simple as preparing a new site for an announcement. Isn’t the guy who controls Sony games now an old killzone developer? Could be smoke and mirrors, testing interest etc.
Who knows, maybe Sony approached the devs and THEY expressed a desire to move on themselves and so Sony just pulled plug on the site. Sony does tend to allow the devs that sort of freedom.
It's amazing how a lot of Sony First Party Studios are either closed or ending franchises. I.E Zipper, Socom, MAG,Starhawk, Resistance, Warhawk, I'm sure there are some I'm missing. Now that i look at the list doesn't; seem like a lot, but these were some of my favorite franchises. So my point being is: I'm watching you Sony.
Who cares? I'm sure Sony will continue to drop 3-5 award winning games a year like usual along with several other pretty good games. I'm sure they will work on new stuff too. I remember Jim Ryan recently talking about possibly shifting to a few multi-player IP as well. Maybe killzone will return who knows.
It's a big shame cause I think it has potential to make a comeback. Just look at God of War. Not to mention the numerous possibilities that could take advantage with the DualSense controller.
Although I hope it goes back to its KZ2 roots. I had fun with KZ3's mp but I can understand why people prefer KZ2's more heavier take on the controls.
I like Halo, but I don't think there is any need for a 'Halo Killer' at this point. If anything, the franchise is slowly undermining itself by making some of the dumbest mistakes possible. Infinite has finally reached a good point in terms of multiplayer, but it took an extra 2 years to get there. Meanwhile, the single-player experience is fine but rather mediocre when compared to the franchise peak.
That said, I would like to see the Killzone franchise back, if anything, to offer more variety to the PS5 exclusive catalog.
I'd love a killzone trilogy, fully remastered on a single disc like they did with Uncharted. Maybe they could make it the full killzone saga including PSP and Vita games converted to console.
I've never liked the idea of a 'franchise killer', why can't both thrive, without one killing off the other? Its such a childish mentality.
That being said, if there ever was a true 'Halo killer', then it would have to be 343 Studios, and the Xbox division. They're doing a fine job killing off their own IP, apparently.
Halo doesn't need to be killed, they've done that themselves. It's a shell of its former self.
I'd take Killzone and Resistance over Halo any day.
