Still Zen 2, CPU bottlenecked games that run at 30fps (probably GTA 6) on base console will still be 30fps.. just smoother if there's dips on the base PS5.

Guess they couldn't afford a modern CPU in the console without putting the price out of reach of typical console buyers.

DarXyde152d ago

More likely, the upgrades will shine through in dedicated components to handle things like ray tracing or, as I mentioned in another topic, ray shortening. If it features something like the latest FSR, I think it's going to save a ton of hardware resources too.

Playstation doesn't really take a brute force approach to hardware since the Cerny era. I suspect this will have 3-5 more TF but will focus on dedicated hardware they'll be test driving for PS6 and software-based optimizations.

Really, visuals are already in a very good place. The focus should really be on performance and other immersive factors (e.g., lighting, sound).

I don't see the real benefit of a Pro model beyond VR, but that's just me. It's at least interesting to speculate.

152d ago
TheEroica152d ago

How about focusing on gameplay instead of lighting and sound...? Everyone talks about what a great boost to performance will be but no one mentions the obvious diminishing returns when you're playing a beautiful product you've probably played two dozen times already with very subtle changes... Ps 5 pro will give you better light and sound, but gameplay will still be meh in the modern day.

DarXyde152d ago

TheEroica,

"How about focusing on gameplay instead of lighting and sound...?"

In the comment you are replying to:

"The focus should really be on performance and other immersive factors (e.g., lighting, sound)."

By performance, I am clearly talking about how it is traditionally understood, especially as we have "performance mode" for many titles nowadays.

Grilla152d ago

They can’t just throw any cpu they want into it, it has to be zen 2 for compatibility.

DickyD1226152d ago

Shhh stop with the logic you'll hurt it's brain.

Einhander1972152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

I'm sure they could use any CPU they want just like they are moving to RDNA 3 with some RDNA 4 features for the GPU, but the issue is that what this guy is talking about is B.S.

This is just the xbox fanboy version of RDNA 1.5 all over again, they know that PS5Pro is going to run circles around their hardware, don't listen to these xbox guys all they are trying to do is spread misinformation.

Sony knows they are doing,

DickyD1226152d ago

Tell me you don't know how computer components work without telling me.

Number1TailzFan152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

Yeah I won't tell you, these guys can tell you because they know nothing too right?

https://youtu.be/YDmpaa3qmR... basically confirms my point. Thanks tho ;)

Haki1112152d ago

@number1 Kepler even says it's zen 2 with higher clock speeds. The Sony Defense Force is dense

Einhander1972152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

Number1TailzFan

Digital Foundry is the propaganda arm of Microsoft.

Sony knows what they are doing they have the best some of engineers in the industry, digital foundry makes videos....

The PS3 Cell marketecture with it's SPU's is the basis of every modern GPU compute unit.

PS4 had NUMA which was a tech designed for super computers which used unified memory clusters. The PS4 was the first commercial device to use the feature. NUMA allows the CPU and the GPU to work off the same data set within the memory simultaneously, it's one of the main reason the PS4 was so much more powerful than the xbone.

PS4 Pro had hardware based upscaling in the form of Checkerboard, 2 years before NVIDIA brought DLSS to market and it needed to use server clusters to train it. AMD almost certainly took what they learned from checkerboard and used this idea to create FSR which didn't release until 4 years after the PS4 Pro.

The PS5 has it's storage architecture which uses a custom decompression chip which allows games like Horizon and Spider-Man ect to load from the UI directly into the game in 7-10 seconds as well as the Tempest Audio which can do full ray traced audio for hundreds of sources in real time.

I am 100% certain Digital Foundry will still be looking for that 17% when PS5 Pro releases with it's full hardware AI upscaling chip and RDNA 4 raytracing that separates the RT computations from the shaders onto it's own circuits.

You guys with your .5's and 17 percents and PlayStation doesn't have ML and can't do FSR blah blah blah types are going to be real disappointed.

anast152d ago

And the PS5 still plays way better than a PC at the same price. It's actually crazy. To play GTA 6 at 60+fps with decent resolution would set you back at least $1000. $1000 is actually being generous to run a game like GTA. Let's not even talk about the disparity between what we got with a PS4 and the PCs at the time.

RaidenBlack152d ago

well if the devs are too lazy to properly optimize PC ports ... it ain't the PC components' fault ... its the software's fault.

anast152d ago

@Raiden

You have a point. But I am not sure to limit it could be optimized to where I could go buy a $500 pc and it run like a PS5. I mean that I am not actually sure.

Sephiroushin152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

Its hard to find a 500$ to run like the console from scratch once you have one made its pretty easy to upgrade, but yea it would need to be premade and on sale (a lucky find) or buying parts bit by bit (not recommended) a PC is not a machine just for playing videogames like a console, you can do a lot more on it, also usually games on console are equivalent of a mix between medium/low and upscaled resolution on PC but people goes to a PC and wants to put everything on ultra with a Nvidia xx50 or amd equivalent and compare it to console which is just wrong!

mkis007152d ago

Setting yourself up for an epic fail.

EvertonFC152d ago

Did you even read the article 😂🤣

152d ago
DickyD1226152d ago

Zen2 is not completely compatible with zen3. Yes computing may be the same but everything coded for zen2 couldn't release without a zen3 patch. (Mostly sonys unannounced games.) It would be cost effective to use zen2 cpu also with better die yields and higher clock speeds. Using some crap YouTube video to affirm your already dumb point doesn't help your case kid.

Pyrofire95152d ago

If it really is Zen 2 that's a bummer, Zen has gotten much better. I suppose it might be for compatibility but that still blows.

kaos89151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

Wow all the thumbs down for a rational comment. This website even confirms that Number1TailzFan comment is correct. https://wccftech.com/playst... Digital Foundry on their GTA 6 user question video even said the cpu would have to be twice as fast to get it from 30 to 60 and that would mean over clocking the cpu by 2X. Fat chance that is going to happen with its power draw and heat dissipation. https://youtu.be/YDmpaa3qmR... Just because something is factual that you dont like should not equate to thumbs down. Rational thinking over emotions and fanboyism. BTW I own all the consoles and gaming pc so no favoritism here, just facts.

DickyD1226146d ago

Because it wasn't factual. It was wrong. Again tell me you don't know about computing without telling me.

RaidenBlack152d ago

Where'd you get the 23.04TF from?
14.33 TF is what the article states (RDNA3 dual issue compute is of very limited use and is restricted to certain few common packed FP16 instructions, so the 28.76TF is unlikely, RDNA3 dual issue was also micro-tested by chipsandcheese.com on a 7900XTX)

Sonic1881152d ago

This one with 23.04TF. Still speculation though

StarkR3ality152d ago

I'm sorry Sonic, but you don't know what you talk about.. there is no console they can make that will perform well in Ray Tracing. Unless they wanna start charging over £1000, which people won't pay.

They'd need at least RTX 3080/4070 levels of performance, and even Then cut backs on PC are needed. GPU's 3x more powerful than PS5

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 151d ago
Sonic1881152d ago

@Stark

Fair enough but it will still be the most powerful *console* out next year. First party exclusives and third-party games will definitely look better and have better performance than their competitors. Tbh PS5 games looks better already imo. I won't be getting a PS5 Pro because I believe the RTX 5000 series will be out by then

DeadlyFire152d ago

all rumors hold some salt. Who knows its all a guessing game. Even a small upgrade they could easily hit 20 TF. A low spec 75W AMD Radeon 7600S mobile gpu can hit 15 Tflops at 2200 Mhz with 28 CU and The 7700S with 32 CU runs at 2500 Mhz and hits 20 Tflops. When the AMD Radeon 8000 series leaks we will see a better picture of where to throw the estimates. Rumors state 60 CU and 2500 Mhz likely and RDNA 3 which means it likely reaches a higher Tflop range than RDNA 2 spec. Either way I look at it that number does seem possible. Even if they just convert the same chip over to RDNA 3 add more CU and boost the clock to 2800 Mhz. 20 or so Tflops is definitely possible. GPUs are evolving pretty fast. The top ones touching 50-60 Tflops. In a couple of years or less maybe 100.

Sonic1881151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

I agree

victorMaje152d ago

I’m not convinced the PS5 has reached a point where a pro is needed. Devs have always optimized more as the gen went on, some of the best games have come out towards the end.
PS5 still has a lot of optimization potential, I feel Pro models are a brute-force approach.

isarai152d ago

Same, like we're just now starting to see games you usually see in like year 2 of previous generations where all limitations of last gen are left behind and we really start to see something new from even the smaller games.

152d ago Replies(1)
dumahim152d ago

Obviously it isn't needed. But it's something people will buy.

darthv72152d ago

If this becomes the norm... people can pretty much just wait the first 3-4 years of a consoles generation and know there will be a better model. Then they can play the games released up to that point as if for their first time.

but... what if all of this isn't real? What if this is all just speculation for the eventual PS6 instead? I remember reading that the 4Pro was just a 'to see if we could do it'. It wasn't meant to be an ongoing thing. And yet many are wanting it to be an ongoing thing. Personally, I prefer they stick to a model and refine their skills at utilizing it over the course of its lifetime (generation). I have seen some fantastic releases come out later in a consoles life that eclipse what was released initially. And the hardware was the same throughout.

Are developers getting lazier and just relying on the hardware instead of their own programming abilities?

Inverno152d ago

I disagree, Unreal 5 is packing some features that clearly can't run on these consoles, despite being made with that engine more in mind. The lighting tech that they want to keep pushing has proven to be far more taxing in the hardware, and so far most games have been using those features at far lower settings and that can be seen when doing comparisons with their PC counterparts. Add on top the push for more games to have a performance mode, where most of these features are turnt off. These consoles can't have both.

StarkR3ality152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

Unreal 5 games aren't exactly running well on almost £1000 GPU's, if you think an extra TFLOPs is gunna solve that issue you're sorely mistaken

Binarycode152d ago

Correct.

Most games are crossgen or using old engines.

Unreal 5 still isn't in a great place performance wise.

I'm happy with what PS5 is pushing out tbh.

You can always ask for more and more, That's what PC's are for. Custom builds that can be anything you want in you throw the money at it.

StarkR3ality152d ago

Agreed, just do the best with what you have, the only reason the previous pro models were warranted was 4k, there's no need this time around.

The pro was twice as powerful, and the Xbox one X was around 5x more powerful. If the rumoured 40-50% uptake in performance is true, there's 0 point.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 1h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos16h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb3315h ago

i think you are really missing the point

That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear2113h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot1d 10h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC5h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon6158614h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k410h ago(Edited 9h ago)

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k410h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody1d 10h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead1d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage17h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.
