Is the PS VR2 the next Vita?

PlayStation has a stellar track record when it comes to home consoles, but its history with peripherals and portables is a little spottier. Part of the problem seems to be that the company is seemingly incapable of learning from its past mistakes, and I’m afraid I’m beginning to see errors made with the Vita being replicated with the PS VR2.

How can you not have No Man Sky on the list.
On top of the games you mention, I'd add:
Synth Riders, After the Fall, Beat Saber, Demeo, Drum Rocks, Job Simulator, LesMills Body Combat, Zenith,
Walking Dead S&S 1+2, Townsmen VR, Tetris Effect and probably a few more.

I actually liked Switchback a lot aswell.

I respect No Mans Sky and have played it. I know it's high on many lists and if I had gotten used to the controls and steep learning curve to surviving I would probably put it somewhere in my top 10. Beat Saber is great but I don't like most of the music. There really is a lot of contenders and that is part of why I said it has plenty of games already. I wish there was a Townsman Demo too,

The difference is that PSVR is an add on for a system that's already supported, VR is something publishers hafto support more of in general. The VITA was it's own independent thing which was left to die cause they released the PS4 a year after and was more important to them.

Actually hybrid gsmes that can work both in vr and out of VR are the best bet alongside bespoke VR games Sony have published quite a few VR games this year and have gathered a decent amount if support.

I think this claim of Sony not supporting the Vita has been a repeated lie in the mainstream gaming press for too long and people accept it as the truth. The reality is market conditions and interest failed it. The PSP had the advantage of people being interested in Sony's first handheld were as the Vita felt more like a financial double dip.

Thank you. As someone who religiously followed the Vita from the announcement as NGP to the slow death I hear so many misconceptions about why it failed.
The launch lineup was probably one of the strongest in history.

Another common thing i hear is the price of the memory cards which yes was annoying and too expensive back then, but wasn’t as much of a dealbreaker most people are claiming it to be.
This was before most games were sold digitally and most vita games still had a physical release. Only later on when most games coming out for Vita were digital the memory cards became such a nuisance for the community. If you look at reviews back when the Vita launched they were overwhelmingly positive about the device, despite the memory cards.

That is a lot of games yes but the vast majority aren’t going have any mass market appeal whatsoever.

I was a massive Vita fan and play mine to this day. Even so it’s clear that the supply of high profile games after the initial launch period very quicky shrank to a trickle then dried up completely. The Sony marketing started pushing indies indies indies and it was flooded with them. It limped along like this for years with only the die hards caring. Real shame.

Both the Vita and the PSVR2 are absolutely top of the line in their fields but absolutely failed to gain a mass market. I love both my Vita and PSTV as well as the PSVR2 but come on now you can't argue the software lineup on the VR2 isn't reminiscent of the Vita. I use my Quest WAY more unfortunately. There's just more to do on it and Steam is WAY cheaper for games

I mean….i feel like these articles are trendy. VR games simply don’t get the press that flat games do because most people can’t experience them. Ownership is much lower.

Honestly I think it’s a better lunch than any previous Sony console. Admittedly there are some games I could have played sooner on Quest but as someone reluctant to buy into Zuckerbergs platform I’m pretty satisfied right now with VR2

I don't think it'll be the next Vita, and I say this as a person who owns 4 Vitas and 3 PS TVs and love them!
PSVR 1 is flooded with games, in fact I've been going back and buying lots of new PSVR 1 games recently during the Black Friday sale last week!

Its true that PSVR 2 has had a slow start, and yes Sony should drive a dump truck full of cash to Gabe Newell and have Valve port Half-Life Alex to PSVR 2. Get your butts in gear Sony, make it happen!

I'd also love for Bandai Namco to make a Time Crisis VR game, I've been playing a fun knock-off type of game on PSVR 1 called Crisis VRigade 2, and all I can think about is what a true Time Crisis game would be like in VR!

I would buy a PSVR2 in a heart beat but not at $900 Canadian. I would like it if Namco ported Summer Lesson to PSVR2. Problem with Vita is it felt like Sony did not fully support it with their own titles leaving it to other game developers. Problem with PSVR2 is the price point and again it's left to game developers to utilize it. The PSVR2 needs the games to fully utilize it. I played RE7 on PSVR and I enjoyed it. And the other problem the PSVR2 and Vita face is that some games are region specific. I had to import both Summer Lesson games from Australia because Namco did not port the game to North America.

There's definitely no hype or excitement behind the PS VR2 and just like the first one, everyone is waiting for the latest Resident Evil to release and then nothing.

Once again Sony fails to get behind it with some high profile titles. No well known IPs from their catalog. No Spider Man, no GoW, no Resistance, etc etc, just relying on ports and demos.

But I'm sure I'll get the standard "wait until their next showcase" response.

High profile titles. Sony released GT7 and Horizon day one. Not even a year old and some gamers expect Sony to drop all their titles immediately onto the headset. Blood and Truth didn't arrive in the first year. Same with Astrobot. Takes time to make games. Where are the games?!? There was a lack of announcements from each presentation and the games they showed were forgotten instantly. Sony seems to generate buzz for the PS5 and their future games like Wolverine but for some reason, an expensive add on requires a "please just wait for it" attitude.

Let's not even begin to mention and remember how they treated the first VR headset and left their users holding a paper weight with nothing of worth to play, oh yeah...RE 7 was all the rage just like now RE 8 and now RE 4. I wish Sony would support their own device as much as Capcom does.

Unfortunately, the PSVR2 is already the next Vita and Sony already replaced it with the Portal (I have yet to see 1 PSVR2 commercial)
I don't want to say I told you so but I told you so when I mentioned that if Sony tries to emulate the PSVR success by banking on small indies' games it would fail simply because the Meta QUEST does exactly that at a cheaper price and with more freedom.
And what do we see on PSVR2? tons of Quest ports with some PC VR games tallying up to 95% of the PSVR2 library.

So here's a free hint for Sony. If some random dude in his basement can create perfectly working VR mods for DOOM3, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil3 Re, and Resident Evil7 by using tools like vorpx, Virgin, etc.
I'm sure they could spend a couple of $ to include a VR mode into their cash grab REMASTERS like TLOU
This way it would at least look like Sony is interested in giving a premium VR experience to the PSVR2 owners.

Vita was a stand alone device. PS VR 2 REQUIRES you to have a PS5 to play VR games. The pricing isn't even in the same ballpark to play. Not even the same. Actually, you didn't tell us anything.

Emulate PSVR success huh? So, let's see, Sony sold somewhere around 5-7 million headsets and made a profit on the hardware day one and the software. The main reason why they created PS VR 2 to duplicate their success at making a profit off of a smaller base of players. Sure they would like to sell more. But most aren't willing to drop a thousand to play. It's a peripheral to create increased immersion. Just like Portal will allow PS5 play away from the TV and eventually stream cloud games. Quest only sold well because Facebook did PREDATORY PRICING (go look up the definition) to keep others from entering the market and compete. Problem is, Quest has barely any high profile games at all. They announced games like GTA that are vaporware or canceled games like Splinter Cell. It also can't run bigger games or hold huge games in storage without running out of room. What big name games are announced for Quest? Nothing. What big games were announced for Quest 3? Nothing. What huge killer app mixed reality games were launched with Quest 3? Nothing. There's also a player retention problem that even Facebook admitted. Shallow, indie games with lower graphics than most big games have Quest headsets sitting in closets or on the shelf too. With the new one barely lasting 2 hours on a battery. Plus, any Quest game will look much better on PS VR 2. While Sony's exclusives murder Quest. GT7 murders Grid Legends.

Mods are cool. But they don't replace actual games made. Sony has GT7, they have Horizon, they published Firewall Ultra, they paid for RE8, Synapse, Switchback and RE4 Remake VR exclusivity.

Not even one year on and you already here the bullshit doom and gloom from Xbox fans. I guess you could always play your high fidelity VR Phil said you were going to have. But that was just another lie to sell Xbox one X that failed to sell well. Just like Series X over S.

Or, you could give Sony time and be patient as the real battle happens next year which I know Sony will have games for VR. You still got knuckleheads thinking Sony has no future games beyond Spider-Man 2. You know, that fastest selling PlayStation game. Sony, Apple, Google, Samsung, Bytedance pivot to AR, etc are coming. Even Facebook is holding their cards until next year where the real fun begins.

But here's the problem Facebook is not a gaming company and their goal with VR has always been the Metaverse and trying to turn VR into the next iPhone just like Apple's goal with VR isn't gaming.
But you know who's a GAMING company? Sony!
And, you know what VR headset requires a GAMING console to be playable? PS VR2
Currently, the GAMING company has yet to hint at a game they will release in the next 6 months or promoting the GAMING headset they have released 8 months ago.

Now if you're okay with PSVR2 being a glorified QUEST2-3 with the occasional PC VR mod to popular games then fine But personally I do expect more from mine especially when Meta does update their headset with features while I'm stuck with the same thing since day one

But Let's hope you're right for the part that Sony is gonna have games for VR for the sake of VR gaming.

We've been over this again and again every generation. Sony has no games then Sony blows away the competition that they are already blowing away. A headset that already has over 100 games in less than a year. With flagship franchises like GT7 leading the charge.

Bet you wish MS FS and Forza were in VR on console. Even Star Field after Skyrim. But Microsoft sucks that way as always.

I bought a PSVR1 but I decided against PSVR2 and my primary reason was a large amount of AAA publishers stepped backed from PSVR2 compared to PSVR1 so the game selection has been mostly Quest ports and some PS5 games with a VR mode.

That doesn't justify a $550 premium price tag if most of the content is indie games. I'm not throwing shade at indie games as they have their place but it will never work out as the main driving force. Sony and Valve put their bet on high end VR and it hasn't really panned out.

PSVR2 should have been a standalone device with the ability to connect to PS5 for those few enhanced exclusive experiences. It also doesn't help that there are issues with the headset like many other models but in this case the Mura and small Fresnel lens sweet spot isn't good. It didn't help that they also just gave the middle finger to all that PSVR1 content for backwards compatibility, justified or not.

PSVR2 is great hardware and there are great games. Problem is VR headsets just dont have the same level of mass market appeal as traditional consoles. This is a market and a headset that only works if you also have a PS5 makes it a bit more niche still compared to say an oculus. It’s a good product but it seems destined for modest sales.

No vr system is heavily supported by the manufacturer. It would be good for sony to have more of its ips represented but vr is heavily dependent on 3rd party devs.

The price is too high, but that's what price cuts are for, once it goes to $300-400 sweet spot and gets 20-30 must haves, it'll do alright.
