No Hogwarts Legacy GOTY Nominations Is a Travesty

Hogwarts Legacy was one of the best games to come out in 2023, but was not nominated for GOTY at The Game Awards when it easily made the cut.

It seriously is, honestly the highlight of the year for me personally for releases

Epicor179d ago

Game-wise it was pretty mediocre though. It captured that HP magic in Hogwarts nicely but after few hours the game feels like a chore. Especially after leaving the castle. I was never expecting this to be a true GOTY contender.

kythlyn179d ago

The discourse around this game really drowned out most other conversation.

RpgSama178d ago

Not the sales conversation, because it sold like gangbusters, I think they just did not want to deal with all the harassment and Twitter mob, which unfortunately means that such a great game was not nominated.

gold_drake180d ago

yeh its quite odd.
we could have easily swapped out some games with others for GOTY

RE4 could have easily been swapped out.

I get that some people dont like Remakes being there and there is some point to it.

But I think it also severely undermines the fact that great remakes are not an easy project to do by any means. Not just because its almost always impossible to please everyone because there is an audience that wants 0 changes and one who wants a ton of them.

And walking that tightrope how knowing what things to keep the same, where to introduce quality of life changes that dont clash with legacy stuff, identifying which parts havent ahed well and its just nostalgia keeping them up there, etc, all while basically having to redo every single asset for the current tech…

There is a reason why even now we still see so many poor remakes and remasters, its certainly not easy. And yes, having a great game as a base helps a lot, but that also makes it so everything in the remake is held up to higher standards too.

So yeah, when its a remake (emphasis on remakes, not remasters) of the quality of the REmakes and especially RE4, I dont mind seein them getting this kind of nomination

Also, if it did got swapped, for me, I would have easily put HiFI Rush or even FF16 before Hogwarts anyway (not that I didnt enjoy the game ) i honestly would even put HiFi Rush right now over Mario Wonder or SP2 (which are great games too)

Ricdog179d ago

Agreed, its not even the best remake of the year. That honor goes to Dead Space.

goldwyncq179d ago

Nope. It made an already legendary game even better and that's a damn fine achievement.

RaiderNation179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

@-Onlink-

Then give it its own category. I just don't think it's fair for a Remake to steal a spot away from a new IP or a high quality sequel.

RE4 wasn't even my favorite Remake this year. That would be Dead Space Remake. And if we're going to nominate remakes, hell where was Metroid Prime? It scored a 94 on metacritic. Why didn't it get nominated for anything? The criteria just seems wildly inconsistent.

As for Hogwarts Legacy, I'm not mad that it wasn't nominated for GOTY because the field was highly competitive.. But to not be nominated for anything at all is ridiculous! It easily couldve/shouldve been nominated for best art direction, best soundtrack, best narrative, etc.

@RaiderNation

"And if we're going to nominate remakes, hell where was Metroid Prime? It scored a 94 on metacritic. Why didn't it get nominated for anything? The criteria just seems wildly inconsistent."

My guess is that DS remake and MP were both 1:1 remakes, just visual overhauls. Whereas RE4 Remake is a reimagining like RE2/3 Remakes.

Levii_92179d ago

@Ricdog Lol F$*K no! Dead space was almost exactly the same, RE4R especially with Seperate Ways now is a miles more compelling and interesting package and it absolutely deserves a GOTY nom.

Ricdog179d ago

@Levii_92

What is the point of a remake (besides being a cash grab)? RE4 remake can’t even replace the original…which is the whole point of a remake (make the game again).

Dead Space remake makes the original obsolete, whereas RE4 remake does not. It’s better in graphics and restrictions, but ruins precision and pacing.

Ironically, REmake for GameCube is the perfect example. It completely makes playing the original Resident Evil (ps1 era) redundant. No one cares about replaying the original when the remake for GameCube improved upon it in every way. RE4 remake fails to do the same and by being different is actually just an average shooter by todays standards. Heck it’s probably not even better than The Evil Within, the real sequels to RE4 from the creator

neutralgamer1992179d ago

--Onilink--

IT'S A REMAKE

end of story. yes not all remakes are equal in quality but a remake is just copying homework and overtaking games which start from ground up

maybe there should be a seperate award for best remake & best remaster of the year but neither should take a spot on GOTY

A childhood dream come true in an amazing game. The most memorable game I've played this year, from the spells, locations, decorating your own living space, the characters, and interacting with fantastic creatures. it was all wonderful. A magical adventure I will never forget and can't wait for a sequel.

senorfartcushion179d ago

They made loads of Harry Potter games when we were kids? They made two Lego games that released on ps4 and Xone.

Kosic179d ago

There's a huge difference in a lego game slapped with potter paint to a game made in the wizard world..

Snookies12179d ago

I keep realizing I need to go through this, lol. I only got about 10 hours in. Was doing a lot of exploration rather than the main quests though. It's a struggle trying to find the time to actually play through all the amazing games I have in my backlog. This is definitely near the top though!

Was Hogwarts Legacy Only Successful Because Of Nostalgia?

Shahmeer from eXputer: "I've always wondered whether the success of Hogwarts Legacy had much to do with nostalgia. The RPG is great but certainly not free of issues."

Markdn12d ago

I totally agree, and no replay value for sure but enjoyed every minute I was playing it. Not a Harry Potter fan but still really enjoyed

Lexreborn212d ago

I still haven’t finished it, mostly due to it not holding my interest after 20 hours. Wouldn’t say it’s a bad game, wouldn’t say it’s amazing I really can’t judge it fully due to not completing it.

Lexreborn212d ago

lol are people upset because I said I put 20 hours into the game and that because I haven’t finished I won’t criticize it’s value or if nostalgia generates it’s success? That’s funny

CrimsonWing6912d ago

Harry Potter is one of the biggest IPs in the world. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why it sold so much. It’s a great game on top of that, so the math kind of maths here.

Can’t wait for the article on if Zelda or Mario only sold well due to nostalgia.

Crows9012d ago

They're trying to find a fake reason for its success...the mainstream hate how successful it became because of the writer behind the series.

So now they want to say that people bought it not because they liked it but only because of nostalgia....as if harry potter is really that old or even a classic IP in the game industry.

thorstein12d ago

That doesn't even make any sense. The author made those statements before the game released. People knew ahead of time and wanted a boycott.

But most people knew any boycott would only punish the people who worked on the game and put their hearts into it (like most boycotts).

So many people bought it, enjoyed it immensely, and moved on.

VenomUK12d ago

@CrimsonWing69 A greatly in demand IP only takes you so far, if it was crap quality then the reviews and word of mouth would have stalled its sales. But it is a good game (judged by Metacritic and user reviews) and that has given the game legs.

Tzuno12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

ngl, it got me in the first half hour
after that, a big let down, mediocre at every step
only fans are praising it

Markdn12d ago

In what way was it mediocre, can't really find anything about it that was mediocre and I'm not a hp fan

Demetrius12d ago

It's still a good game almost time for a 2nd playthrough, the passion they put into it is🔥🔥 crazy how after a couple months or a year folks get to complaining about this n that about certain games smh childish mfs
