The Next Nintendo Console Will Have Power Closer To PS4 And Xbox One, Reveals Leaked Activision Doc

The upcoming Nintendo console, rumored to be Switch 2, will have power closer to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One than the current-gen consoles.

It does not make up for having noticeably weaker hardware. PS5 & Series X are having some trouble running a new UE5 title dude. DF demonstrated the fps & resolution of both consoles, both upscaling from 720p and having frame dips into the 40fps range and below on PS5, bit better on Series X but both are not ideal. The next Switch is not going to magically be able to run demanding UE5 titles very well, I guarantee they will be locked 30fps and likely with downgraded graphics over the other consoles.

Demanding third party titles should not be the focus, it would be better if Nintendo focus on first party games with games made well enough to run at a solid 60fps with good graphics, rather than push the machine beyond what it can do.

Well that's disappointing. I thought the switch 2 was more powerful than a ps5 with better ray tracing from what a lot of people have been saying.

Nintendo have been making weaker systems than their rivals for decades and they and their fans have been championing having weaker hardware. A lot of people loved talking about the portability of the switch and it being the only portable gaming system you can play modern games on but now the market has a lot of other portable gaming systems that's a lot more powerful than a switch and it's successor.

The switch 2 can't rely on just having a lot of ports of games especially from last generation because there are already very powerful portable gaming systems you can play games of every generation in high quality

Current Switch is woefully underpowered compared to the Xbox Series consoles and PS5, yet there have been numerous months where it still outsells them both, especially in Japan. Switch is weaker than PS4 and Xbox One, yet it still outsold them both. The versatility of the hybrid home console/handheld nature of the Switch 2, coupled with Nintendo’s developer’s unmatched ingenuity, along side some key third party exclusives and multiplats spells success for the Switch successor yet again 😉

I knew from that matrix demo that unreal 5 wasn't very good for these consoles. Controversial but after some of the games that came out this year I think I preferred when there were cross gen games because these games with these ugly upscaling systems and inconsistent framerates end up looking worse than if they just had PS4 graphics but high Res and 60fps. Just don't make the games cross gen so you can take advantage of the SSD.

Yeah, being "close to last gen in power" was what Switch was supposed to be, and it wasn't. Now they're saying that Switch 2 will still be stuck in last gen, when this gen's hardware is already showing its age. There's no excuse for cheaping out on hardware that much, Nintendo is getting greedy... you know they're still going to expect top dollar for the thing, at least as much as a Series S, which is what it should be comparing itself to.

the current switch is already at around the 1tf level which is just below the PS4/XBO. I think they mean Switch 2 will be more like a PS4 Pro or Series S in terms of being 4tf in power.

The Switch is several times weaker than the VCR Xbox.

The Tegra X1 chip inside the Switch is capable of running at 1GHz which would produce 512 Gigaflops of performance.

Nintendo has this chip downclocked to around 700 MHz so at maximum (when docked) it's GPU performance is 350~ Gigaflops. VCR box was 1.4 Teraflops by comparison. Just in GPU power, the VCR is around 4 times more performant.

The memory in the Switch is nearly 3 times slower than even the DDR3 memory.

Nintendo downclocked the CPU of the switch as well.

It's no mystery why the Switch wasn't able to keep up with the PS4 and X1 when they were its main competition.

I feel like I have made this point before but if you have a phone that was released within the last 3 years. The hardware in that phone would embarrasse the Switch in performance.

The Switch isn't a 1 Teraflop machine. It's a 350 Gigaflop system at best with anemic memory bandwidth. Even when compared to the original X1.

I remember RockStar developers explicitly stating that the Switch could not run RDR2. Rockstar are generally good at utilizing and pushing hardware. Rockstar not attempting RDR2 on the Switch was enough to prove the system wasn’t in the same power ballpark as the XB1 and PS4.

Just like the switch was close to PS3/360 when we were well into the PS4/XBOX1 era. But Nintendo has to stay in a certain price range in order to succeed. They should target a locked 60 fps over graphics imo.

People say Switch is close to PS3/X360 era, but any game even trying to get close to graphics of that quality need ro be run through the cloud.

Come on, even the likes of the Steam Deck and ROG Ally can't run R&C perfectly, and they are higher powered but also expensive in comparison to the Switch. Nintendo will need to balance the power/cost ratio because if the Switch 2 cost in the region of £700 people just aren't going to buy it.

You are absolutely right, but I don't want a portable Nintendo console.
My best moments with Nintendo was NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube, and ever since I've only experienced disappointment.
For me personally, I want Nintendo to go back to 1 home console and 1 portable console.
I was never in for the Gameboy, Nintendo DS etc...

However I love Zelda, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime and enjoyed the Marios up to GameCube.
But I don't want to be limited by hardware. Once again, I want Zelda in graphics that wows me, that has full voice cast and 4k 60fps.

What are you expecting from a handheld? The Steam Deck is about X-Box One caliber power, and it is a meaty device. Nintendo will likely want to have something a bit thinner/more efficient, and you sure aren't going to be able to do that in a small form factor.

The Switch 2 will be PS4 levels of performance. It is what it is. Nintendo can’t make a chunky handheld for the mass market. They will have to stay within the power envelope available given the size precedent of the machine they’re making. iPhone 15 Pro Max's version of RE Village is using PS4 assets running at a resolution lower than PS4's 900p (720p on iOS according to some YT reviewers who have some access and tried the demos) at 30FPS with noticably worse settings than PS4 (again, according to those who played the demo).

If true, that’s actually more likely due to battery life + restrictions on the App Store regarding game size. Not the hardware itself.

No links because I can't remember what video I watched that made the claim. There is a Bored at Work video uploaded recently on YT that shows the RE Village settings menu, though even he only showed that the game is indeed running at 1560x720x30.

It'll be somewhat hard to compare the "Switch 2" to the PS4/Xbone I bet.
It sounds like it'll have Tensor Cores via Nvidia which could be VERY different results than what you'd see on PS4gen.

Rant: Raw power wise I would expect it to be around there, running games at 720-1080p but with really nice AA.
If this console is successful enough it could encourage/result in some better opimization accross the board. I know there's been this odd pushback from devs saying that they are optimizing and it's just that new stuff is expesive but I still feel like they're dodging real resposibility for performance. There is no excuses for such poor performance, if these new tools really are so expesive than you shouldn't have used them. There shouldn't be constant traversal stutters. We should SUFFER such big performance losses for marginally better mesh quality and lighting. Be smart about what you put in games and for the love of god stop assuming Screen Space Reflections can solve everything.

Handheld don't magically break the laws of physics just because ppl want them to. Nintendo needs beefy battery power for handheld gaming that will make it almost impossible to work as well as a ps5. I for one am happy with ps4 handheld graphics. I think Sony needs to take a page out of Nintendo handbook and not sell at a loss every Gen for their hardware

We must be sensible with our expectations. Nintendo wants a energy efficient (15w), small sized handheld with a low entry level price, capable of utilizing Nintendo's first party stylized games as well as capable of playing third party games at an acceptable level (if it manages to score native ports of Final Fantasy games for instance it will be a big win for N).

I predict that it will have Steamdeck level power but with better battery and efficiency as well as few tricks up its sleeve if we are to believe the majority of the rumors (DLSS, Camera function).

It is Nintendo after all. They can release enhanced versions of existing first party games with 60fps 1080p and many will double dip no doubt.

No way this is going to be Asus Rog Ally level which is much more expensive and released only recently with power hungry expensive specs (AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Extreme Processor "Zen4" architecture with 4nm process).

However I can see Nintendo delivering a SteamDeck/PS4 level optimized console with an affordable price tag.

After all, the Steamdeck I am currently using, already plays current gen triple A games at an acceptable level (30fps medium to low settings) with few exceptions.

Dissapointing...but as discussed on Df a possibility of the dock having a separate GPU is very intriguing. This would explain those saying it was looking like a closer experience to gen 9 on the next switch. Here's hoping...
