While advances in violent expression have been driven primarily by technical breakthroughs, 2008 was a year for lateral growth. Deaths weren't necessarily gorier in 2008, but the gore became more perverse. Violenct games couldn't rely on simple technical detail to impress players. Blood spatters and simple dismemberments had become predictable. In 2008, the violent videogame needed creativity, dramatic context, and a deviant sense of humor to stand out.
