PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 was once ‘running beautifully’ on Xbox 360

The game's assistant producer says the number of discs was an issue.

Obviously they would had to remove all references to bluray in the game had they actually proceeded to make this happen. Id bet it would be something like at least 3-4 discs though.

Flawlessmic312d ago

The most interesting thing to hear is that there was no exclusivity deal, which we all assumed there was.

It was simply Sony's forward thinking and tech that put them in the position where there console was the only one that could do it the way Konami wanted.

This gives me hope mgs 4 will definitely be a part of the volume 2 collection

GhostScholar312d ago

The fact that mgs 4 hasn’t been on ps4 or 5 is a real head scratcher. Seems like a really dumb move. Also if it was such forward tech on the ps3 why wasn’t it put out on ps4? Doesn’t makes sense.

CobraKai312d ago

@Ghost
Forward move at the time. Plus the PS3 exclusives arent the easiest to port and Konami, especially with the fallout of MGS’ creator, probably won’t invest the time and money on it.

@Darth
They would also have to get rid of Apple products. The PS3 and PSP in the nomad. Rerecord the inside joke about swapping discs and mentioning the PS3.

TrueGamer79312d ago

MG4 is my personal favorite of the series. I’d def rebuy the remake to play the game again. I do wonder why they haven’t ported 4 to ps4 or ps5.

neomahi311d ago

@ Cobra Kai - I don't know, man, they've gone a while without making money since Kojima left, I think they're wanting to make money again and that's money, just not as might as they might think. They're better off letting Metal Gear lie in infamy and letting new aspiring developers that want to work on new games, like Silent Hill are their best bets

CobraKai311d ago

@Neo
They were invested in pachinko and soccer. Konami used to be one of my favorite game companies, then they just didn’t care about video games.

Now that both Xbox and PlayStation use Blu-ray wouldn’t those jokes stay in and instead apply to Nintendo now

Computersaysno312d ago (Edited 312d ago )

MGS4 is about 32GB. Most of the big data files were merely uncompressed audio and high quality HD video used extensively in MGS4. The game used the space because it was available, not because it really needed to.

You could probably more than halve the space required settling for normal 360 compression codecs and say 720p compressed video files. Fit the whole game on two dual layer DVD discs.

Case in point was MGSV ended up only 25GB, despite that game having massively better visuals and big environments. Second case: FFXIII was 38GB on PS3 but only 18GB on X360, because compression.

I_am_Batman312d ago

The MGS franchise always had real-time cutscenes so those aren't compressible video files. The older games had some real-life video footage but they've stopped using these with MGS4, so I don't know what extensive usage of HD video you're talking about.

Computersaysno309d ago (Edited 309d ago )

Actually Metal Gear Solid 4 had about thirteen minutes of of HD video at the very start of the game, but the point was the 7.1 soundtrack throughout was uncompressed. Eight channels. This was a massive chunk of the data on the disc. The game had 8 hours of cut scene audio alone. Plus music and dialogue codecs and everything else actually in game!

It wouldn't be very hard to compress all this down to far smaller file sizes with minimal quality loss. It certainly wasn't the visuals or texture assets that made the game file size 32GB! None of this was critical to the game actually working compressed and mixed for 6 channels which was far more common anyway.

I'm glad that I cleared that up for you.

sparky77312d ago

The good news from this means it should be possible to port to current gen consoles if they were able to get it to run without the CELL.

I do remember back then how everyone said it was only possible on the CELL reminds me of todays it's only possible on the PS5's SSD.

RaidenBlack312d ago

Can't comment on the 'only possible on the CELL' part but if a game was made specifically utilizing CELL's complex architecture, then it was more difficult to port but not totally impossible.
Now if there exists a X360 port of MGS4, then it should be relatively feasible to port to x86 based systems.

XBManiac312d ago

PowerPC based CELL and Xbox 360 CPUs had little in common with x86.

KwietStorm_BLM312d ago

A smart person says a game made for the Cell makes it harder to port to other platforms. A sparky person says a game made for PS3 is only possible because of the Cell, or any other negative PlayStation derivative.

Magog312d ago

So porting it shouldn't be hard. A 360 is very similar to modern console and PC structure.

ChasterMies312d ago

Xbox 360 is not similar to modern consoles. Xbox 360 ran on a multi-core PowerPC processor. Apple had to write Rosetta to make PowerPC apps run on Intel processors when they switched from PowerPC to Intel. It’s why Xbox 360 backwards compatibility is on a game-by-game basis. Funny enough, the Cell Processor is a custom PowerPC processor.

XBManiac312d ago

Remember that CELL was also PowerPC based arquitecture...

shadowknight203312d ago

As much as I would love to play mgs4 again, and I still hope to, I know playing it will bring back my old school Metal Gear Online days, and I miss that part of the game so, so much. 😢

Shane Kim312d ago

Man MGO was so damn good. That and KZ2 are probably the best multiplayer games imo.

Chocoburger311d ago

The game is still online via fan servers, I think its even playable on PC these days. You can play MGO 2 right now if you wanted to, nothing is stopping you from doing so.

RedDeadLB312d ago (Edited 312d ago )

isnt this old news anyway? did they not say that Microsoft were generally more interested in Rising back in the old days?

Hard to believe it's been 15 years already!

Silver_ShadoWolf321d ago

I loved the movie Metal Gear Solid 4.

atsugiT2320d ago

Thats crazy.. 15 years before that, starfox was brand new. It seems like ages between those two, but mgs4 feels like it just happened.

Nyxus320d ago

Yeah, it's also pretty crazy to think there's far more time between now and MGS4 (15 years) than between MGS4 and MGS1 (9 years).

autoglope320d ago

Still amazing looking and playing game ,.. about 5 hours too many cut-scenes) But still love it,..

Well it has a story to tell, and it tells it perfectly with those cut-scenes.

PlayStation 3 emulation tested: revisiting Metal Gear Solid 4 at 4K 60fps with RPCS3

From Digital Foundry: "There's a wealth of PlayStation 3 exclusive games that remain locked to the system - console-exclusive titles that sold millions of copies in their day that are no longer playable natively on modern systems. Sony itself has a system in place to make them accessible at least - the streaming-based PlayStation Now - but what you're looking at are compromised versions of the original experience, marred with image quality and latency problems. However, there is a route forward, albeit to a limited audience. The open source RPCS3 emulator allows PC users to access the PlayStation 3 library, and I've been playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots at 4K resolution at 60fps, with 16x anisotropic filtering. It's a remarkable showcase of what could be, whether it is via local emulation on a PlayStation console, or via a Bluepoint-class remaster.

At Digital Foundry, we always desire the highest possible frame-rates with new game releases but also understand this isn't always possible, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is an interesting case as it's a game that teased us with the possibility of 60 frames per second only to stomp on our dreams with its eventual release. Flash back to the Tokyo Game Show in 2005 and we saw a game trailer running flat out at 60 frames per second - a far cry from the final release, that mostly operated in a 20-30fps window. The game did run unlocked, however, so there were sparing sections where 60fps was possible - a teaser of the game it was supposed to be."

Curious if Sony has ever tried to get RPCS3 running on a PS4 or PS5?

Eonjay731d ago

Well according to the video John has plenty of drops and non working visuals and physics and he is rocking a i9-1200k and a 3090 so if $2000+ worth of PC tech can't do it, I have very little hope for a $399-$499 console. Of course I would love to be proven wrong but there is nothing wrong with being realistic as well.

darthv72731d ago

Usually a PC has a lot of overhead and wasted resources to deal with while if this was really given the time to optimize on something like a console... it could work.

If i recall, the emulation that MS uses for xb/360 on xbo started out as a pet project and was given the green light to move forward into a bigger program and got better as they created their curated list of titles.

Eonjay731d ago (Edited 731d ago )

@darthv72
The test John is doing is just a brute force attempt at running PS3. And keep in mind they aren't running straight up disc code either. While I'm sure some appreciate Microsoft curated program (which is kinda similar to this only with the full backing of their inhouse engineers) what I would like to see on PS5 is actual emulation of the entire catalog. But honestly, even former ICE team members have explained why a feet like this is so monstorously difficult.

Check out this video here for more info: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

This isn't like Xbox 360 emulation at all and we should at least try to understand what a beast the SPU engines were. Like I said, I hope it does happen one day, but I can't act like I don't understand the enormous challange.

ABizzel1731d ago

The issue here is PC is emulating an entire platform's coding through the Processor, and emulating the software to run. Sony has access to the exact coding needed to run and emulate the PS3, so the CPU overhead on PS5 will be less than what a traditional PC would need for the same task.

So theoretically it's possible, the question is are they willing to invest into resolution and frame scaling. Resolution is definitely the easier of the two and I can easily see them aiming for 1440p (2x Native PS3 resolution(s)) and possibly 4K but evening out framepacing while keeping the same framerates.

But I don't see Sony investing in double fps via software / hardware like a fps boost.

Profchaos731d ago

True however John used mostly default settings and when he selected the settings to apply to the games profile (rpcs3 can save custom game profiles) his experience was improved and crashes fixed.

This is common I've been using rpcs3 for a little bit and I only had 2 games running at default without issue most cases I customise to fix flicker issues or increase fps.

My rig is no where near as impressive rtx 2070 and i78700k with 32gb ram outside of ram the ps5 will outperform my rig yet I can still take many games up to 1440p at 120fps with ease.

Konami should have put the money they wasted on the last Contra and Metal gear survive on a MGS4 remaster. Or a whole series remaster for the PS4 and XB. It would have actually made them more money.

chicken_in_the_corn731d ago

I'm surprised they didn't release a collection for 8th gen

731d ago
Z501731d ago

Not XB. Too many PS3 and Sony references. Apple too.

darthv72731d ago

Those references dont really apply anymore. At that time, sure. Like referencing bluray when 360 didnt support it but xbo/sx do. And MS doesnt have a problem with apple. They make quite a bit of $$ off selling to apple customers.

VersusDMC731d ago

If they go through the trouble of remastering the game for current gen they can take out Sony references.

There is no real substantial financial gain for Sony or Konami to keeping a MGS4 remaster exclusive...but the rumored MGS remake is another story. Sony will pay up for that.

Z501731d ago (Edited 731d ago )

Sonny is playing a PSP with an exclusive game next to a PS3. Snake uses a DS3 to control MKii, etc.

Take those things away. You've now diluted the Kojima experience?

darkrider731d ago (Edited 731d ago )

Damn. I really wished Sony would get this ip from konami. What a franchise

Orchard731d ago

If the franchise is going to goto anyone it needs to be Kojima Productions. I don’t trust Sony or Microsoft or anyone else with it.

Sadly, Konami are set in their ways and won’t sell their IPs to anyone.

MissAubrey731d ago

Sony needs to stay the hell away from any Japanese developer and franchises.

ANIALATOR136731d ago

Sony really needs to just buy Konami's dormant IPs. Surely Konami would be open for the right deal.

MissAubrey731d ago

No thanks we dont need Sony to Sony check all of Konami.

Orchard731d ago (Edited 731d ago )

This is what Sony could and should have offered with PS+ premium.

They should just go license RPCS3 (which may not even need licensing depending on what OSS license was used) - or hire the team behind it.

I wonder if we’ll ever see RPCS3 running on Xbox now that it runs emulators. I bet someone is looking into porting it.

lonewolf10731d ago

Looks like they could use it (I'm no expert by a long shot):

RPCS3 uses the GNU General Public License Version 2 (June 1991). According to the license, you are welcome to use RPCS3 and its source code for any purpose, but distributing RPCS3 requires that the source code be released and attribution given.
