Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is great, but I hope the next game is nothing like it

Whatever Nintendo does with the next part in the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom series, I hope it's something completely different.

The next game will be on a new Nintendo console and hopefully Nintendo will adapt a lot of the new technologies available on current gaming consoles today. If the new Nintendo games have all of the technical issues seen on a lot of switch games today Hopefully reviewers treat those new games like they would current gen games on other gaming platforms.

Yeah, TofK will be on their new hardware too. That's what I'll play it on, because right now I've only played a few hours and it's WAY too much like BofW. Right down to the lousy graphics, which will at least be updated next gen.

I want a traditional Zelda game, with smaller unique open hubs full of life, puzzles, items that don’t break, variety of locations, a better story and so on

Yeah my biggest issue is weapons breaking to fast until you find better weapons and I agree every Zelda doesn't have to be open world

Weapons last a lot longer in TotK if you fuse. I don't love that crap still breaks as easily as it does, but at the least my inventory has been less of a revolving door of gear than in BotW.

I wish more games in general would opt for open hub areas rather than open world. Open world games magic quickly for me. I want to keep exploring new locations and witnessing massive set pieces. Open world games have all nearly merged into one style. It's become very boring.

Same but unfortunately Nintendo will keep this open world formula for every big 3D Zelda game from now on. Cool, exploration is great but...I want a great linear traditional Zelda experience again. The masses prefer this open world sandbox thing so... it's what it is.

Just beat totk and...great game but still disappointing at the same time as a long time Zelda fan lol.

TOTK is a fine game. Over halfway through and I can definitely say I prefer BOTW. Tears has way too much gimmicky stuff that I'm not interested in. Not really a fan of the building aspects. I just want the brilliant devs at Nintendo to create something I can play and don't have to feel like I'm slightly a co-developer. I'm more of a fan of actual puzzles than I am trying to find out what I can randomly build to circumnavigate a puzzle scenario. Again, Tears of the Kingdom is fine but, it's Majora's Mask and Breath of the Wild is Ocarina of Time. One is the GOAT the other is the follow up to the GOAT.

So are we ready to admit that BoTW and ToTK are not masterpieces? There is so much from older games that are more interesting than anything these last two games have done. I don't get how anyone can say these games are the best in the series when WW, TP, Minish Cap, MM, Oracle exist.

It might look like a dlc, but it is anything but. The map size is more than double the size of BOTW. the overall gameplay has vastly changed and the creative possibilities in gameplay freedom is vast.
That said. Nintendo has been very spoiler free in their marketing, so I can see how someone thinks it looks like a dlc.

I dont mind the open world, I just can't see how they can keep topping this kind of game. Maybe a half and half kind of thing. Similar open world with a stronger traditional zelda format? I dunno. I'm just an old gamer who grew up collecting empty bottles and really miss that aspect of the game. The unique items that link would get.

Agreed, I think TOTK is a fantastic game, but for me, BOTW was just such a brilliant game when they created TOTK I am not really sure how they could have improved upon it, without going in a completely different direction which would have been risky. So, instead they added some features which I am not that crazy about...

Nintendo has multiple teams that will work on Zelda, just like they did with the Link's Awakening remake while TotK was under development. They'll all be overseen by Aonuma-san, but can take many directions. It would be great to see something like the Link's Awakening style but for a brand new game. We could have a new Zelda every two or three years, alternating between the old portable style ones with a more dungeon/linear gameplay and a larger open world title every four to five years. It would be really great to see a third party also get their hands on it the way Capcom did for Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons all those years ago. Such fantastic, unique entries in the series.

It won't. Nintendo can't make much better with a portable hybrid console. People need to lower expectations. Remember that Nintendo had the opportunity to launch the switch with double the power, but they went with cheaper and less powerfull choice

I'm not a fan of open world. I don't have the time to want to play 150 hours of drudgery, repetition and fiddly controls. An innovative controller would helped instead of the same controller that's been around for more than 20 years. I understand that's its the current fad, and it sells, and since because its Nintendo they get a free pass and people are afraid to criticise them.
