PS5 Best-Selling Console, Zelda OLED Boosts Switch - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for April 2023

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 1,345,894 units sold for April 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 37.44 million units lifetime worldwide.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 1,273,752 units to bring its lifetime sales to 125.06 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 372,859 units to bring their lifetime sales to 21.67 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 12,972 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.03 million units.

Ouch. Phil Spencer meant it when he said Microsoft can’t out-console Sony and Nintendo. I’m still curious about how many Series S consoles are in the wild. At some point, maybe already, developers are going to have to leave Series S behind. You can’t push the envelope for PS5 and Series X if you also have to work with the 4 tf in the Series S. This makes the true current gen install base for Xbox even smaller.

And then people exclaimed about how close the sales were... Others tried to tell them that the chip shortage was skewing supply and that did not represent demand, but they wouldn't listen, they just blew their horns.

Even Microsoft knew the chip shortage was an opportunity, which is why they penned the deals to further limit supply of chips to PlayStation. I expect that move wasn't lost on the regulators when evaluating Microsoft's 'competitive' tactics.

Word is really out there that MS don’t intend on releasing quality games for their console. That and people burnt from last gen is what we seeing right now. They might as well go the full service route or third party publisher. Sadly Sega was in the same situation but seeing as they didn’t have deep pockets they survived by becoming a multi platform publisher. Not even a regime change can salvage XBOX it’s too far gone.

Playstation was almost dead in the PS3 era and they transformed that failure into a success with games and hard work.

Nintendo flopped hard with the Wii U and they came back strong with the Switch.

Xbox fell hard with the Xbox One and NEVER recovered from it. They don't want to do the hard work as Sony and Nintendo. They want to pay $$$ to win (ABK deal).

We need competitors who are willing to do the hard work, as Sony and Nintendo.

The first year or two for PS3 was rough. From Devs complaining it was to hard to code for (looking at you valve). To games running worse on PS3 compared to 360 as well as worse resolution. High price at launch, PSN being hacked and brought offline for a few weeks. Little big planet being delayed due to a song. HAZE!!! a few more things happened as well during the early part of the PS3 life.

Then Sony started to take note. Released God of war 3, uncharted 2 and 3. Little big planet 2, modnation, MAG, MGS4, Demons Souls, infamous, Ratchet and clank, heavy rain, resistance 2 and 3, gran turismo, Killzone. Then finally right at the end The Last Of Us.

@Nykamari Lol You must of either been too young or not alive during 2006-2009. For Sony, it was bad! During that time, the PS3 looked like the Saturn. People thought they were going to be the next Sega. Their system was a pain to develop for, 3rd party devs abandoned them, and they were getting smacked around by the Wii and 360.

Ps3 early on left alot to be desired, and 3rd party devs had trouble with it. I stuck around cause we'll sonys got an extremely good track record. They came through fairly quickly just took a few years for 3rd party devs to catch on.

In its early life cycle I had a blast with Warhawk, Resistance and many other first party titles. 3rd party didn’t get the hang of the ps3 unit Sony sent teams out to help them. ICE Team for the win! PS3 sold more units than Xbox 360, and probably a few million more than that when you account for RRoD replacements.

WiiU was a flop, for sure, and flopped so hard that Nintendo has basically bowed out of the home console market and dedicated itself to the handheld market.

The Xbox discussion is still basically trying to recover from E3 2013 and Microsoft’s grand plan is spending $70B on existing games to make them exclusive. If read between the lines of what Phil said to Kinda Funny, that strategy won’t work. What Xbox will become is multi-platform storefront like Steam with hardware as a side business like Surface tablets.

I remember the PS3 presentation in the Hollywood Palladium with a mockup that had two HDMI ports and promised two CELL processors. There was no NVIDIA hardware inside at that time... Two years later, it was on sale with only one HDMI, one CELL and one NVIDIA chip, and 256+256 MB of RAM... The PS3 had a really, really hard start. Some of us thought it was dead on arrival, with the Xbox 360 already in shops a year before (two years before in Europe). But Sony made it. It was something to be studied at marketing and engineering schools.

Xbox numbers make sense, what reason does anyone have to ever own an Xbox? Starfield? Just play on PC, any Microsoft game coming in the future? Just play on PC.
I'd expect Xbox hardware numbers to continue falling sharply.

I just buy the odd month here and there and then rinse it out for that period. There's rarely anything worthwhile for months after that and otherwise the temptation is to play the rest of the filler on there and settle for sub-standard gaming. I just won't do it.

In my circle, almost everyone is convinced about using the cloud or a PC for Xbox games. They don't even think about buying an Xbox console. They have Switch, PS5, Steam Deck, laptops, Desktop PCs and a some are really expecting an ASUS Rog Ally. Nothing about Xbox in sight... and that's sad, because we hardly find games at a bargain in local shops or accesories, only online and with higher prices than the competition. It is not only that Microsoft sells less consoles, it is that accesories and games are more expensive than on PlayStation 5. And Game Pass is not a solution, but part of the problem.
