Unity Lays Off 600 Employees and Plans to Close 28 Offices

Insider Gaming writes: "It was recently revealed that Unity, an industry-leading provider of a top-tier game engine, has taken part in a third round of redundancies, ultimately laying off a further 600 employees. Not only that but there are plans to reduce the firm’s footprint by up to 50%, with the closure of more than 28 offices being rolled out over the next few years."

My POV: more preliminary layoffs in the tech sector to prep for an oncoming recession.

neutralgamer1992392d ago

These tech companies hire way more than they need and that’s why every few years they have to layoff. Look at how many employees google and Microsoft have. Both are stable companies but they hire and fire a lot

As far as recession I agree economy can’t stay this way because inflation is too high but there is no blueprint on how to deal with posts pandemic recovery

coolbeans392d ago

And that's fair too. I still think the scope and frequency of recent layoffs across the sector are for the likely downturn that's looming overhead.

kneon392d ago

the pandemic is only a small part of the problem. The problem stems from over a decade of free money. Those stupidly low interest rates should have started climbing back to normal long ago. But by keeping the rates low governments around the world have fueled an asset bubble like we've never seen before. It could get really ugly.

I can promise you that no company is going to over hire by 100%. That doesn't happen. Ever.

Redundancies are created by acquisitions, market changes and technology.

Companies will scale up their workforce to meet the demands of the market, especially when there is revenue to be gained by doing so.

Companies will reduce their workforce when less is needed to obtain a given revenue. What you call extra on hand staff is result of market changes. For a more direct example look up what happened to cloud Infrastructure employees post epidemic.

Which is funny because all companies laying off people at the same time is the exact reason why a recession occurs in the first place! It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Many companies cut folks citing economic downturn in the future. A mass of employees flood the market and spending goes down, people fall back on bills and payments of cars, mortgages etc. Bankruptcies are filed, companies topple. Thus, we enter the prophesied recession!

Well... kinda but also not really. Like kneon brought up above, with our current material conditions that's more likely to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if our environment was more sensible with currency, finance, etc., having a succession of layoffs in one key industry could just imply another opening up (i.e. less carriage makers is offset by more car manufacturers). There would be dips or hiccups to getting there, but it'd find equilibrium.

typical western company, hire people, make profit then fire them... sad for those affected.

John Riccitiello Is at it again. That guy stole the life out of EA and the soul out of their studios. Looks like he’s not content with Unity until it’s chop shopped into a shell of its former self either.
