Redfall's ugly open world will only look worse once you see how great Prey 2017 still looks

Arkane's six-year-old immersive sim has never looked better.

SullysCigar376d ago

What's with the lazy eye in that thumbnail? Is that a bug?

masterfox376d ago

that's what happens when developing for two xbox consoles, one doesn't align with the other. :D

shinoff2183376d ago

Masterfox

I don't care what side you prefer that was funny.

Deathdeliverer376d ago

If she’s the sniper class a lot of innocent people are going to get hurt.

CrimsonWing69376d ago

It's indicative of the design.

SullysCigar376d ago

She's got one eye on the fire place, the other on the chimney pot. Maybe it's her unlockable 'special skill'.

badz149375d ago

that's Ariel from the new Little Mermaid, no?

IamTylerDurden1375d ago

Idk but Prey isn't good looking. Deathloop would be the superior example.

Prey was a decent game. Not as good as Dishonored imo. They usually make 7-8 type of games depending on your taste so Redfall is a huge disappointment.

Crows90376d ago

Dishonored was incredible. World, action, puzzle and approach based gameplay. Prey was pretty good but started lacking in enemy variety. Those mimics are by far my favourite enemy type of any game.

Death loop was a massive let down for me.

IamTylerDurden1375d ago

Deathloop was good but got old.

ED-E376d ago

Agree, I liked the mimics and some parts of the story/characters in Prey (was unfortunately spoiled of the early twist and the ending, so that was a let-down to begin with) but didn't captured me like Dishonoured did. Thus I'm surprised they mentioned how good Prey looked. To me it was easily the worst part of the game, extremely sterile, bland looking objects, areas and enemies. The art design, especially of the vampires, were one of the things which turned me off instantly when I saw the preview trailers of Redfall.

Traecy376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

I enjoyed all the Dishonored games as well. I tried Prey & I just couldn't get into it.

Hofstaderman376d ago

Me too, I thought I was the only one.

shinoff2183376d ago

I really enjoyed prey over dishonered. Probably cause I love scinfi. To be honest though I've never giving dishonored it's fair shot. I dabbled in it a little. I'd like to. Think they had some sort of remaster on ps4 I'll have to check amazon

Sonic1881376d ago

Arkane lost a few key people over the years. I don't know if that has anything to do with Redfall

-Foxtrot376d ago

I didn’t mind it but I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t called Prey

Seeing a game you loved get rebooted into something that isn’t anything like what it actually is was super sad. I liked Tommy, I wanted to see his story continue and we got a complete reset.

If they changed the name it probably would have helped them.

IamTylerDurden1375d ago

Prey is a better game but it's not good looking.

Anyone remember that incredibly amazing Prey 2 cinematic trailer? Why they would ever cancel that game is still dumbfounding.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

porkChop376d ago

I am still pissed that I never got to play that game. The cinematic trailer is cool but there's tons of actual gameplay out as well.

Anyway, Bethesda tried to force the devs to let Bethesda buy them and the devs said no. So Bethesda cancelled the game and made up a story about poor quality and the game just being nothing more than a tech demo. The director said the game was actually almost done by the time it was cancelled, and that it certainly didn't lack in quality.

Then Bethesda forced Arkane to call their game Prey, pissing off prey fans and associating the game with a series it had nothing in common with. Then one of the main devs from Arkane left because of it.

The worst part of this is that Prey 1 and 2's dev Human Head Studios then went on to revive their old Rune series. Immediately after Rune II released the studio went bankrupt and Bethesda swooped in the pick up all the devs and open a new studio, Roundhouse. So they still got what they wanted. It's unlikely they'll ever let Roundhouse revive Prey 2 but I really hope they do.

Vengeance1138376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

See this seems like a situation where important lines in the legally binding contract between the Publisher and Dev should have been written in. Clauses like the publisher cannot back out after a certain point. Else who's to stop any Publisher really from just tricking a dev into making a game and then on purpose canceling it at the end and go nawwww sorry bruh we changed our minds, sucks to be you! byeeeee

porkChop376d ago

Agreed. Human Head got royally screwed. I hope most devs are smarter with any contracts they sign.

CBaoth376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

Bethesda tried to buy the studio. When Human Head said they wanted to remain independent Bethesda canceled the game, bankrupting them. Very scummy move. Didn't surprise me though - this is the same Todd Howard who essentially took Ken Rolston's credit for making Elder Scrolls open world. Ever wonder why there is very little innovation to ES since Morrowind? Ken left early in Oblivion's development and Todd is a hack

EDIT: worst part is via developer diary thing, Human devs said the said the game was almost complete

IamTylerDurden1375d ago

That's why Oblivion was the best TES, it had some Ken influence.

shinoff2183376d ago

Prey 2 would've been fucking awesome if it had come to fruition. I was pretty damn hyped for that game.

-Foxtrot376d ago

Yeah it looked great

Only issue was the main character who was a generic looking space marine / bounty Hunter

They had Tommy in the game as an NPC rather than the main character, made no sense to me.

IamTylerDurden1375d ago

Yes, it had minor Mass Effect vibes.

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos1d 5h ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7212h ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k41d 4h ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos19h ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing691d 4h ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex1d 4h ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay7h ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos1d 3h ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS174d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.

Arkane Austin Was Working on a Big Redfall Update for May Before Microsoft Ditched the Game

The now abandoned Redfall had a roadmap of support that was being actively worked on before Microsoft scrapped all development and closed its developer, IGN can reveal.

jznrpg5d ago

But Xbox fans told us MS buying these studios was going to be more games for everyone

Chocoburger4d ago

Couldn't even let them finish the major update that was supposed to come out this month for a game that desperately needed an update? Spencer is such a douche.
