Report: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Discs Indicate "Download Required" in Order to Play

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor physical disc versions will still require players to download data before they can play the single-player game.

Crows90385d ago

This is common place. The real issue is requiring online connection at all times. I understand that with the size of games, etc.. they may need to require bigger downloads than what is possible on disc or they decided to save money on that end.

isarai385d ago

It is not common place wtf are you talking about? Not a single game in my PS5 physical collection requires a download to work.

Crows90385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

@isarai
Most games require a download. You download the game don't you? Discs pretty much function as the DRM device now. Most of the game data needs to be downloaded. Could be wrong but all or most of my physical PS5 games have needed it. Haven't tried doing installations without internet connection though

@Crows90 🤷‍♂️ last disc PS5 game I bought was GT7 and the game is on the disc and best to installed while your disconnected from the internet so it transfers the data over faster to the ssd

shinoff2183384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

No excuses. Double that disc up. Companies have done this before and still do. For those that prefer physical media we gotta push back

Crow90

Most games don't require a download I'm not sure where your getting this. Maybe an update sure especially the bigger aaa titles but for the whole actual game. That's just not true.

Reminds me of when Kingdom Hearts 3 came out, and the original discs are worthless for offline play because they didn't include the end of the game to avoid spoilers from leaks. A valiant effort, but a dick move since that meant downloading a sizable chunk of game + the day one patch, the bane of anyone with less than stellar internet or a harsh data cap. You actually had to hard wait to buy a later printing of the game in that scenario, and you were forced to buy new to make sure you didn't end up with a launch copy.

The "*sigh* Really..." moments just insist on showing up a few times a generation from a publisher that is either greedy or simply misguided. Would be nice if publishers remembered how many places actually still don't have access to high speed internet, much less enough data to give a single game 50GB+ of it.

shinoff2183384d ago

There's 100s if not 1000s of areas in the u.s. alone that don't have high speed internet to this day

LostPotato385d ago

More DRM or they just don't know howto compress games anymore nowadays.

neomahi385d ago

They don't compress games any way. It's the Activision tactic. The game isn't stored on the disc, it's just an activation code. Seriously. I just bought Titanfall 2 digitally last night for $3.50 on the PS Store and the game was 60GB (the original PS3 HDD) and took 3 hours to download and used up data in an ISP market that's getting ready to re-enforce data caps which means when you go over, you pay, and while 4K streaming is available, you're encouraged to stream SD resolution to keep up your limit. Games are HUGE these days, ALL OF THEM, with exception to Nintendo's that never require updates and fit on cartridges l, and Bluray disc maximum capacity discs, Dual-layer, are only 50GB still. How big was The Last of Us: Part II? Yeah, I hate Electronic Arts, but unlike other devs and publishers, at least EA are courteous enough to tell you where everyone else tries to quietly sweep it under the rug. If you'd like a list of file sizes to show you've been played all along on this thinking all your games are on a disc you own, you're wrong. Your Bluray disc are just an authentication code granting you rights to a game, that can be taken back if the distributor chooses

QuantumMechanic385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

False! The vast majority of disc-based games, at least on Playstation systems, are playable without further download. They may be a bit rough but are generally playable. The number of exceptions were limited generally to service games in the PS3 era. Only Xbox Series games profoundly suffer this problem because SmartDelivery is only smart for MS, since the discs contain at best the Xbox One builds. Finally, this notion that physical games can be reclaimed is absolutely absurd; no law enforcement department would try to do this. And, if you want to try to argue there could be software-based gatekeeping, well, then one can always purchase a new/clean console and keep it offline.

dumahim384d ago

"They don't compress games any way.'

Do you realize how big a game would be if they used no compression?

shinoff2183384d ago

Neo

Do you have that list handy I'd sure like to see it. I do know they exist but think it's being overblown because it isn't that many

XiNatsuDragnel385d ago

Seriously for SP * Download required * man this sucks

QuantumMechanic385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Well, given that a second disc would cost them only another dollar or so, EA has lost my purchase. I've got plenty of games in my backlog; they just made it easy for me to keep my money.

wiz7191384d ago

It would only cost $1 for a single disc , they’ll have to print millions of disc to put in stores all around the world. How much you’ll think that cost in total ?? I bet wayyyyy more then a $1 .. Gamers are to demanding these days , how about you pay so we all can have the second disc we need .. I bet if you was footing bill you’ll have the same tune

shinoff2183384d ago

You work for ea dog.

Let's see if it cost them a million to print more disc a game that's a;out to make 50 mill 100 mill whatever it sells. It's a bs move.

How are gamers demanding o shit you mean when I buy a physical copy of a game I demand to have it all on disc. Well no fkg shit of course I do

QuantumMechanic384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

I'd be more than happy to pay a slightly higher price for multi-disc games. I'd give them another $5 (exceeding the disc cost) to defray the lost sales of those who opt not to buy physically as a result of the immense burden disc-swapping places upon them.

SDuck384d ago

how much are you paying for the standard version of the game in day 1? What's that? 70 bucks? Geez that certainly can't cover the cost of an extra dollar per copy!

wiz7191383d ago

@Shinoff nah not at all , but what ever cost companies have to pay always gets pushed onto the consumers every time .. it’s going to be $70 next things it’s going to be $80 or $90 per multi disc game.

shinoff2183384d ago

Exactly. Like they couldn't afford a second disc. Shit move on ea s part

Hofstaderman385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Well EA you will require a sale from me in order for that to happen....good luck to you.

Is the download locked by a code btw??? If so that's scummy.

excaliburps385d ago

Depends on what EA does. MW2 had a activation key as part of the disc, so you "unlocked" it but had to DL it anyway.

Welshy385d ago

On which platform? I have MW2 on PS5 and didn't have to enter any codes to download the online component.

Welshy385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Replying to my own comment to see if someone wants to own up to disagreeing with a fact and elaborate which platform they have that requires code activation to use the disc. MW2 does not have an activation key on console, disagreeing with objective fact is a certified N4G moment.

Knushwood Butt384d ago

Dunno mate. I don't play CoD.
