The PS1 Emulation On PS4 & PS5 Is Seriously Underrated

PlayStation Plus Premium has had its share of critics. Sony’s 2022 response to Game Pass landed hollow on its launch, with most of the complaints centered around the library (or lack thereof). Unfortunately, the black eye that the sparse library gave fans made it hard for them to see the things that Sony did right with the service, one of which is the PS4 & PS5’s emulation of classic PS1 titles.

Lack of library? There are a shit ton more games on there than GP.

The only things GP wins on is first party day 1 releases.

matt139390d ago

I don't think it's really comparable, gp is leagues ahead in terms of quality titles.

shinoff2183390d ago

The revamped ps plus has been since September.

AsunaYuukiTheFlash390d ago

Quality and Xbox can't be mention in the same sentence /smh

JackBNimble390d ago

Extra and premium have a shit ton of shovel wear, and little quality or I would be subbing .
More dosen't mean better.

To be honest, GP could be complete garbage too , I don't know since I don't own an xbox and I only game on playstation.

MadLad390d ago

I have more classic PlayStation games on my Series S than Sony does on their PS5, and it's not locked behind a monthly paywall.

DickyD1226390d ago

It's not? You can outright purchase classics other than ps3.

babadivad390d ago

It's underrated on Xbox too.

SonyStyled390d ago

It is? I swear a couple years ago Xbox’s partial bc program was making waves on here and it was the big thing to compliment the gamepass news, but maybe attention has shifted to Zemimax/ActBlizz now.

Why would you say it’s underrated, or do you mean it’s not widely used?

babadivad389d ago

@SonyStyled
I'm taking about Playstation emulation on Xbox.

DarXyde389d ago (Edited 389d ago )

Aren't they cracking down on emulation?

FallenAngel1984390d ago

The author was specifically talking about PlayStation Plus Premium, not just the entire service as a whole

Profchaos390d ago

Article is talking about PS1 games specifically not the entire library.

As someone who paid for the top teir I am pretty underwhelmed so much more should have been done given how far advanced community emulators which are open source like duckstation.

IMissJimRyan390d ago

For an official emulator it's fine. But compared to emulators on PC it's still decades behind.

mastershredder390d ago

Lol no. A big proprietary wrapper and licensing no.

kids….

MadLad390d ago

You're getting disagrees for just being real. This article is literally making a giant deal out of save states. Simple save states lol.
You can fully revamp and extend games via emulation with the dropping of a couple files. Host online multiplayer for games that never had it.

Two entirely different ball games.

Terry_B390d ago

The people who disagreed to your comment probably never played a PS1 game via an PSX Emulator like Epsxe. Or don't know about the many technical features it has.

Deathdeliverer390d ago

I really don’t understand the bad press PlayStation gets for its gamespass equivalent. It’s far cheaper, has a ton of games and classics are regularly added to, which is a far bigger legacy collection than Microsoft could ever have. There isn’t really a legacy outside of early Halo, Gears, so on. You could argue crimson skies (amazing back then) and Phantom Dust, but those games got zero support from Microsoft, especially the latter. But Xbox gamers just didn’t appreciate how Bad Azz that game was. Day one releases, Gamespass all day. Everything else AND if you’re old enough to care about PS3 and earlier, PlayStation wins.

jjb1981390d ago

I agree with this. The PS classic catalog is robust.

JackBNimble390d ago

Excluding the ps3 games of course.
And to clarify I'm talking about emulating ps3 games not streaming or having ps3 BC.

Ps3 BC should be top priority in my opinion

Unknown_Gamer5794390d ago

The bad press is because it’s Sony’s service, and not MS’s, as the cringe games media seems to love everything MS does, and have a special disdain for everything Sony does. Obviously unbiased sources are difficult to come by these days, but Sony manages to stay on top regardless.

MadLad390d ago

Do you guys really believe that crap? All I ever see is positive press for Sony. Their games. Their sales.
The moment an outlier falls through the cracks, or people do actually have a bit of criticism towards something Sony related, all of a sudden the entire industry is out to get them at every turn.

babadivad390d ago

The Sony persecution complex you guys have is getting ridiculous. I remember an IGN game journalists say on camera that he hates Xbox (this was during the X1 PS4 era). They were talking about Sony and Xbox game presentations. He got zero push-back from his panel of co-host either. The just laughed and kept going.

I'm not going to argue there's an anti-Xbox conspiracy but no media would be so bold as to show such open bias against Sony.

Sony is the market leader so they give them more slack when they mess up. Because if they don't, Sony won't give them early review copies of their games and drive traffic to their sites.

Look how long it took for major reviewers to give a review on the broken state of Last of Us PC. They are just now trickling in. They waited until some patches came because they didn't want to embarrass and anger Sony.

The reason being, Sony is the market leader. They aren't persecuted.

Sgt_Slaughter390d ago

PS fans really talked themselves into believing there's an anti-Sony conspiracy, that's absolutely amazing.

You must not have been here long to think that, this entire site has been pro-Sony since I've been here back in 2008.

Deathdeliverer390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

To all the upset people, I didn’t say Sony as a whole is hated on. Can’t speak for everyone else. Their SUBSCRIPTION service gets negative articles. Often. That’s a fact. Other areas of PlayStation get good publicity because it’s kicking butt. You might see an article here or there about PlayStation NEEDING something but they are usually click bait. Microsoft is crapping the bed in several ways so they are getting bad press. At the same time people will still turn it into a positive for Microsoft like gamespass simply negates all the bad or it cannot be completed with. Like I said, as far as new games that’s correct. For everything else AND if you’re old enough to appreciate the classics, PlayStation has the better service in my opinion.

generic-user-name389d ago

@babadivad

Quick to forget G4's Froskin (or whatever her name is) and how freely she stated "PS5 has no games, it's dead on arrival, Xbox will destroy it" (or something along those lines. Her co-hosts simply laughed.

Different subset of gamers primarily use Playstation vs Xbox. Playstation users are more likely to buy physical copies of games, hence digital only service won't be seen as favorably as it is on Xbox, where the entire point is to own nothing and stream CoD and Fifa all day long.

senorfartcushion390d ago

As someone who has plus essentials-only, is there input lag?

Deathdeliverer390d ago

If you’re streaming a game that depends on your connection. If you’re streaming a game AND playing online like I did with SF3 then it’s an even bigger test on your speed. I have GB up and down so I had zero issues. Even playing KOF 13 through streaming I was able to pull off combo trials. YouTube KOF combo trials to see what kind of testament that is.

Smitty2020390d ago

I expected a lot more from the retro library that’s why I downgraded

The 5 best games on PlayStation Plus Premium that make subscribing worth it

The PS5 is an incredible console, and if you're lucky enough to have one, or have just received one for Christmas then you'll already know there is a host of great games out there.

What you may not be aware of is that if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium, you'll actually get access to a huge catalogue of titles to play at any time. Many of which you can stream without having to do any downloads. If you have a PlayStation Portal you could even play these titles from your bed.

Abnor_Mal124d ago

Damn the only one I’ve played so far is Miles Morales, although I do own Control and Rift Apart.

ChasterMies124d ago

Odd list. Where is Horizon Forbidden West? Ghost of Tsushima? Demon’s Souls? Returnal? And fun indie games like Superliminal? Where’s “A Plage Tale Requiem” and “Evil West”, the current PS+ Essential offerings?

Exvalos112d ago

Evil west is underrated I'm having a really good time playing it.

juniorpop124d ago

Like seriously? Those are games Extra Tier can get - so not worth upgrading to Premium

PS Plus Is Finally Delivering Solid Titles, And I Hope Sony Keeps It That Way

from eXputer "After the price hike, PS Plus suffered heavy damage, which it seems to be making amends for, but the question is, will this quality continue?"

Crows90126d ago

Wait...ps plus has been decent many months of the past year. January is no exception. Even ps plus worst month is better than alternatives.

Rockstar126d ago

@JW2SD

This looks to be a pretty ironic comment looking through your comment history.
You seem to be quite the fanboy yourself.

Pot, meet kettle...

S2Killinit125d ago

Pretty much confirmed by the numbers.

1nsomniac126d ago

What are you guys talking about!? PS+ has been seen widely by the vast majority as being very poor since the price increase. Take a look at their official blog or any PS+ thread, to see that a good 90% has been people complaining about how bad it has been since the price increase.

Honestly the state of some of you people. They flashed GTA5 at you (a 13 year old game) and all of a sudden you turned skirts and 180’d. All of a sudden it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Pathetic.

Rocketisleague126d ago

Ah its been 2 good months. More than likely it will drop off again because this has happened multiple times for the last 3 years

126d ago
shinoff2183126d ago

That month with all those rpgs a bit ago was fantastic. People gotta realize not every game is gonna be tailored to them. I don't much care for the stuff this month but I won't knock it. Don't knock it till you try it, I have other stuff to play so I'm not trying it therefore not knocking

Abnor_Mal126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

Are they talking about PS Essential and comparing it to Gamepass?

BeHunted126d ago

Game Pass will soon have all the games from Activision Blizzard, and the upcoming Call of Duty game this year might be available on Game Pass from the first day.

shinoff2183126d ago

They will put the most popular games from Activision and blizzard on there. Shame though cause I haven't really liked an Activision game since those superhero rpgs they did back on ps3 and 360. O ultimate alliance. They might throw a few bones of some old school games from when Activision actually tried stuff but cod, the newer Tony hawks , I can't even think of anything else , I'm good on those.

purple101126d ago

Phil Spencer “just wait “

Also just wait for the price increase
Cos that’s coming as soon as cod drops

Reaper22_125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

It's still better than ps plus without Activision Blizzard games.

I remember back when game pass was first starting playstation fans said sony doesn't need a service like that. I guess the times have changed...lol

Einhander1972125d ago

Reaper22_

"I remember back when game pass was first starting playstation fans said sony doesn't need a service like that. I guess the times have changed...lol"

You miss the point.

What people were against was the day one games because they can't bring in the type of revenue needed to support game development because they knew people would stop buying games,

For example there is about a zero percent chance that Starfield has made back the costs of an 8 year dev cycle on less than 3m sales which were the majority were Steam. And reporting tells us that subscription membership across the board are down or at best flat so an argument can't even be made that Starfield pulled in anywhere close to the number of people needed to sustain the type of budgets games like this require. Interestingly Microsoft has since stopped reporting subscription numbers and staff no longer get bonuses based on subscription growth.

Also keep in mind PlayStation already had a Subscription PlayStation Now, and that PlayStation had been giving out games on a subscription since PS3.

RedDevils125d ago

Tbh I haven't play a single Activision game for at least a decade now, I wouldn't notice if suddenly it disappear from the gaming world.

The3faces126d ago

Gamepass destroys ps plus but yeah keep trying to convince yourself otherwise lol.

SyntheticForm126d ago

I honestly think that PC gaming is superior to both in this regard. I think the larger up front cost is offset by so many things.

andy85126d ago

It doesn't though does it. Day one games absolutely. Overall quality and price absolutely not

Barlos126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

GP and PS+ are fine if you never want to own your games.

Personally I prefer to drop money on the games I want to own, not a rental service.
