Hogwarts Legacy and PS5 rescue UK games market in Q1 2023 | UK Monthy Charts

The console hardware space is up a substantial 24.2% for the first quarter of the year, GfK data shows. This is due to the PS5, which is now in fully supply but was largely missing from shelves during Q1 last year. PS5 sales are up over 180% for the first three months of the year, and Sony’s new console accounted for over half the market during the quarter. The success off-set a steep decline in Nintendo Switch sales (down over 25%), which is the No.2 console of the year so far. Xbox Series S and X sales were also down 18% for the first quarter.

"65% of Resident Evil 4 sales were on PlayStation platforms, 20% on Xbox and 15% on PC."

SullysCigar399d ago (Edited 399d ago )

That'll only increase in favour of PlayStation once the PSVR2 patch lands. The same thing happened with RE7. 10% of all players chose to play on PSVR, because it's a game changer for Resident Evil games.

Ratchet23399d ago (Edited 399d ago )

After finishing resident evil 8 on VR, I realized I should buy more underwear before playing RE4VR .😂

SullysCigar399d ago

^ Lol there's honestly so much more where that came from. We've got RE4 Remake, Afterlife and Madison off the top of my head, but I know I'm forgetting some.

1Victor399d ago

Having a psvr2 patch for RE4 is the only way I’ll buy it as I usually skip those kind of remakes a few extra minutes or scenes don’t validate a new purchase in my eyes 🤷🏿

D4RC399d ago

VR Mod for RE4 Remake is out now for PC. I haven't tried it, so no idea if it's any good, but if going by RE2, RE3, RE7 and RE8 VR mods, those were excellent, so hopefully the RE4 mod is just as good.

SullysCigar399d ago

^ Not to be that guy D4RC, but I played the RE7 and RE8 mods and they were straight turd compared to the Capcom releases. It's better than no VR, don't get me wrong.

I've heard good initial impressions of the RE4 Remake mod, but honestly, I'd rather just play the old N64 version that's on Quest, because at least it all works as a VR game should.

No date yet for the official release of RE4 Remake VR, but as it's the same engine as RE Village VR, I'm thinking only a few months and I'm not ruining the experience for myself by being impatient. I didn't play RE Village flat, because I knew it would be on PSVR2 - going in fresh maximises enjoyment for sure!

Keep in mind RE 4 Remake only released on the Xbox Series X|S consoles, whereas it released on both PS4 and PS5.

Nyxus399d ago

Sure, but PS4 sales only account for a small percentage in the UK (for this game anyway).

TheKingKratos399d ago (Edited 399d ago )

Perfect time for Sony to buy Capcom and also buy Namco as well as From Software, Square Enix as well

Gamers will be just as happy as they were with Activision and Betheseda being bought by Microsoft, right ?!

Was there any doubt? People always wanted a PS5 over everything else but the shortage was the only obstacle.

Mark my words, the gap is only going to increase with Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI.

BehindTheRows399d ago

Indeed. Going to be a blood bath with those two releases!

SullysCigar399d ago

On the plus side, the second hand market for Xbox is very competitive now. With so many available, prices are falling fast on eBay. My nephew just sold his to put the money towards his PSVR2... Fair to say he was a bit surprised at how little it went for.

Hofstaderman399d ago

My bro is getting one. Currently the price is a bit above my fireplace for now. I have FFXVI preordered and will lock down Spider-Man when those preorders up as I want a steelbook.
PS5 flying off the shelves here despite the economic downturn. I spoke to a guy who had one in his hands and he was saying the price of psn plus and trading games would tide him and kids through.

It's interesting that Xbox series x decline in sales when it should be hitting it's strides with this gen getting started.... Goes to show what xbox really is in reality

Nyxus399d ago

Yeah Switch sales declining is understandable, but the Series X should only be just beginning, like the PS5.

XbladeTeddy399d ago

I know right. That implies the market was in danger when it clearly isn't.

Silly Mammo399d ago

Don't you know the console market is dying? Perhaps you haven't read all the doom & gloom articles that have been put out for the last 3 console generations.

Was Hogwarts Legacy Only Successful Because Of Nostalgia?

Shahmeer from eXputer: "I've always wondered whether the success of Hogwarts Legacy had much to do with nostalgia. The RPG is great but certainly not free of issues."

Markdn13d ago

I totally agree, and no replay value for sure but enjoyed every minute I was playing it. Not a Harry Potter fan but still really enjoyed

Lexreborn213d ago

I still haven’t finished it, mostly due to it not holding my interest after 20 hours. Wouldn’t say it’s a bad game, wouldn’t say it’s amazing I really can’t judge it fully due to not completing it.

Lexreborn213d ago

lol are people upset because I said I put 20 hours into the game and that because I haven’t finished I won’t criticize it’s value or if nostalgia generates it’s success? That’s funny

CrimsonWing6913d ago

Harry Potter is one of the biggest IPs in the world. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why it sold so much. It’s a great game on top of that, so the math kind of maths here.

Can’t wait for the article on if Zelda or Mario only sold well due to nostalgia.

Crows9013d ago

They're trying to find a fake reason for its success...the mainstream hate how successful it became because of the writer behind the series.

So now they want to say that people bought it not because they liked it but only because of nostalgia....as if harry potter is really that old or even a classic IP in the game industry.

thorstein13d ago

That doesn't even make any sense. The author made those statements before the game released. People knew ahead of time and wanted a boycott.

But most people knew any boycott would only punish the people who worked on the game and put their hearts into it (like most boycotts).

So many people bought it, enjoyed it immensely, and moved on.

VenomUK13d ago

@CrimsonWing69 A greatly in demand IP only takes you so far, if it was crap quality then the reviews and word of mouth would have stalled its sales. But it is a good game (judged by Metacritic and user reviews) and that has given the game legs.

Tzuno13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

ngl, it got me in the first half hour
after that, a big let down, mediocre at every step
only fans are praising it

Markdn13d ago

In what way was it mediocre, can't really find anything about it that was mediocre and I'm not a hp fan

Demetrius13d ago

It's still a good game almost time for a 2nd playthrough, the passion they put into it is🔥🔥 crazy how after a couple months or a year folks get to complaining about this n that about certain games smh childish mfs

Hogwarts Legacy might be hiding a grotto in here

A Hogwarts Legacy player came across a gigantic tree under Bakar's tower, which might be hiding a grotto in it.
