Killzone 2 also victims of war metacritic

A while ago Resistance 2 was voted down because of the metacritic war between the PS3 and X360 fanboys. Now it's the turn of the big PlayStation exclusive Killzone 2, because the first review was posted on metacritic.

You say you will base your review on ign and 1up but that's not much better than Gametrailers bias. 1up has Shoe still lurking around even though he was such 360 fanboy they told him to quit because it started to really look bad. And ign is really just a 360 site. Sure, they have some joke of a Playstation team now, but that's because it looked really stupid having part of the site funded as teamxbox and that same site (ign) claiming to deliver fair coverage of all platforms. I have been going to Metacritic for 2 years and this is common for exclusive games on both sides!

I will say that it has gotten worse since people started referring to metacritic reviews on N4G. So more than likely, the same fanboys here just flooded that site.

I would never intentionally rate a game a low score on Metacritic just because it's not on my favorite system (Playstation 3), but this is just crazy.

An Xbox 360 fanboy's biggest fear is Killzone 2 getting good review scores because many of them have been trashing KZ2 for years even after seeing how amazing the game is, and with OPM giving KZ2 a perfect score, I think that more good review scores are in store. OPM doesn't go softly with PS3 exclusives, so I think that their score is pretty unbiased.

In retaliation, I guess Ninja Blade and Star Ocean 4 are next on the Hit List.

This example right here goes to show how easy it is to skew results when the internet allows for no accountability. I also don't understand how a 2 - 4 page review can be distilled down into a single numerical score? Does that seem somewhat... counter intuitive to anyone? If we can just look at the numbers, why bother reading the review? That seems to be the stance many people take.

I'll trust my own judgment over someone who promised incentives to get an early review for their magazine, or some screwy fanboy who just hates the 360 or PS3.

I think Metacritic just shows how absolutely messed up video game reviewing is.

Look at the scoring for movies and music. They use the entire review scale, while video games MUST be over 90 to be worth of a star and above 75 to be "green".

The Dark Knight is on 82, American Psycho is on 64.
Kid A by Radiohead is on 80, Send Away the Tigers by Manic Street Preachers is on 69.

All of these are critically acclaimed, but using the video game review system, FLOPS. The biggest difference? The two that are in the 60s are still "green" on Metacritic, if they were games they'd be into yellow territory.

I don't own a 360 so I don't check any site for results about any 360 games. My guess is people who check other systems games scores like that feel something is missing from thier lives and want to know if they should do something about it. They don't want to hear something might be better than what they have so they try to tear it down early and hope there's enough like-minded people who will join the crusade so they can have some type of mindless cult who will be there with them in saying "I don't need that other <whatever>, it sucks". Yeah, I'm sure Playstation and Wii fans are out there in the same little bubble, on some perch thinking too much about things. The world is a sad place.

already THAT bored with their games that they have to trash titles that aren't even released yet on Metacritic?

in either case, it doesn't matter. Killzone 2 speaks for itself, and no matter what review sites like 1up, and their B score (i'm calling it right now; 1up is going to give the game a B at the most. if they give it anything over a B+ to an A, i'd really be surprised) isn't going to change the fact that Guerrilla Games delivered in the ONLY area that seemed to matter since E3 2005, and that's the VISUALS.

having played the beta for 3 weeks, i can say the gameplay is spot on as well. it's different, addicting, and most importantly, genuinely fun.

what i don't get is why the gaming media is so quick to jump on the "we need a fresh, different approach to the FPS genre" bandwagon, and then absolutely MISS THE FRIGGING BOAT and trash Killzone 2 on EVERYTHING that it's doing to be fresh, and have a different approach to the FPS genre, ESPECIALLY when it WORKS!

Mirror's Edge tried to be different, and the "failure" of Mirror's Edge (i happen to like it, but i can't play it for prolonged periods of time because the camera movements make me nauseous), is that a key component to it's different approach wasn't as good in practice as it was on paper (in my opinion, the super realistic movement of the character's POV as they move around was more disorienting than exhilarating).

what Killzone 2 does different from every other FPS (which is something that so far, hardly ANY preview has bothered to explain), is it's "feel."

the controls DON'T feel like any other console FPS on the market. it is not twitch. it is not fast like Halo or Resistance 2 or Call of Duty 4. it is not an arcadey online experience. with that said, the controls feels incredibly responsive and appropriate for THAT GAME. i had been playing Resistance 2 prior to the KZ2 beta, so there was definitely some getting accustomed to the new controls. once i did, i was ranking in the top three of matches i was in, and even ranking first in many matches. it just took some rethinking about what this game felt like. the controls are UNIQUE, and you can customize them to better suit your control preferences, but it's not going to change the fact that the game is a paced, methodical shooter.

switching to a more COD like control scheme isn't going to suddenly turn KZ2 into COD. that's something these media outlets need to let go. you CAN be completely different from the top dog on the market, and yet STILL be a great game.

tied to the controls, the way your character moves is very unique, and in a sense, i felt more in the shoes of my character in KZ2, than i did in the shoes of Faith in Mirror's Edge, and it's not because Faith was a woman. you don't need excessive head bob and camera swaying to make it feel like you are realy that character. tuning the controls to add a sense of mass and weight to your character accomplishes this. KZ2 has this affect in spades. your character doesn't feel like a super-soldier, like they do in games like Halo and Resistance 2.

and they don't feel unrealistically light on their feet like in COD (there's absolutely NO WAY a soldier wearing that much gear, with weapons that heavy, will be able to turn on a dime).

KZ2 is taking that realism to the next level beyond just the visuals; they've applied it to the controls as well.

what's even more ironic about this, is that they've been doing this since Killzone!

the reason why people don't know this is because they hopped on the original Killzone hate bandwagon, without having played the game. well, i've played the game (i'm almost close to beating it, actually), and the original tried to accomplish that same heavy, "real" feel to it, but it was so hard to pull off, because the visuals didn't support this, and the gaming industry at large simply wasn't ready for it, as they were in the grip of Halo Fever, and wanted every game to be like Halo, much like they are in COD4 fever, and want everything to be like COD4.

even MMO players want every MMO to be like WoW. the PS2's hardware also wasn't up to the task of delivering that kind of experience, and those technological hurdles make it hard to take a realistic world seriously (especially, as good as the graphics were, just weren't good enough to convey the realism Guerrilla Games was clearly aiming for).

the industry is full of contradictions, and the gaming media exacerbates it when they scream about wanting something different, but constantly reinforcing the need for constant familiarity. if it's different, the media shirks away and strikes (ie, Killzone 2 not feeling like COD4 seems to be the biggest and ONLY complaint they can find about the game, since it's clearly not the visuals anymore).

Killzone 2 multi-player is in the bag; i've played it, it's fun. end of story. people NOT wanting the same old, same old, COD4/Halo/Resistance 2 experience will enjoy it.

if the single player campaign is anything like the single player campaigns in Killzone and Killzone: Liberation, then we're good. the campaigns for BOTH previous KZ titles were genuinely enjoyable affairs and had good stories. from what i've seen of the KZ2 single player campaign, it looks really, really good. i don't expect it to deviate from the standards of the FPS genre in terms of design, but the controls alone guarantee that i'll have a very different experience from other FPS titles on the market. look at what tweaking the controls did to Resident Evil 4. it was only a slight change in perspective and controls from the previous RE games, and it made such an impact on the overall game.

these people expecting KZ2 to be the be all, end all of FPS titles, are fooling themselves, and setting themselves up for disappointment. the game is doing some remarkable things with technology, that will more than likely be the new standards by which FPS titles are judged in terms of production quality and execution, there are certain tenets of the FPS genre that are there BECAUSE of the limitations f that First Person Perspective. you can only expect so much change and innovation, when you are basically limited to the two eyes of your main character! stop expecting radical changes from the genre in every game, and you will be a much happier FPS gamer.

with all that said, i can't wait to pick up my copy of KZ2 in February. everytime i think i'm burned out on FPS titles, games like Resistance 2, KZ2, and to a lesser extent, titles like Far Cry 2 pull me back in, by simply being too enjoyable to pass up giving at the LEAST a try.

OK, is this crap going to be pulled on every high profile exclusive that comes out for the 360 and PS3? LAME! I said it last time, there are many people who put their blood, sweat and tears into these games. They give up a lot of free time and family time to make them.
