Respawn Explains Why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Isn't on PS4, Xbox One

Respawn dev and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor game director Stig Asmussen explains why the game won't be available on last-gen (PS4, Xbox One).

P_Bomb455d ago

Indeed. It truly is time to move on up.

excaliburps455d ago

Yep. Finally. With the PS5/XSX now being available in stores, most devs should just leave last-gen behind since we know it limits the overall experience for everyone.

Shane Kim455d ago

Not only that, the attach rate of last gen consoles are really low. I understand it's free money, but lets move on.

The problem with Xbox is they made the Series S which is basically a last gen machine like the PS4Pro or Xbox One X (that’s what it was called right ?stupid naming system)

CobraKai454d ago

I agree. I know they extended the life of last gen due to hardware shortages, but now is the time to focus on the present.

Firebird360454d ago

Jznrpg Not true, series s is nothing like pro or one x. It uses the same next gen architecture of ps5 and series x.
Theres no reason it will hold back ps5 or series x from reaching their full potential.

Just because Series S uses modern architecture doesn't mean that it is not holding back the MUCH more powerful systems above it. Every multiplat game MUST be coded to be able to run on the weakest system of the bunch. This will be true no matter how modern the architecture of that weaker system is. This is also true for games last gen that had to be made to be able to run on switch.

Want a scene with 10,000 troops each with their own AI marching towards a player? Well, too bad, the weakest system can only do 4,000... and adding in those extra 6k troops actually changes the gameplay, it's easier on the weaker system with fewer troops... so all systems get 4000.

Some gameplay decisions are scalable. We can reduce level of detail, draw distance, resolution, framerate... but some things cannot be scaled. The size of the levels, the complexity of the physics (as this can affect gameplay), the number of players on screen at once (which can also affect gameplay), etc... For game developers, these are things that have to be considered when developing for multiple platforms.

Just a completely made up example, but that applies to all things in the game... graphics, physics, sound, memory usage (which affects level size, asset detail, etc), all of it must run on the weak system too.

This is why cross-gen hurt so many launch titles... now that we're finally ditching last-gen, we're still stuck with one system that is kinda in-between generations.

Just everyone remember this is rspawns 2nd game under the ea umbrella titanfall they were on there own management same with fallen order yes they were purchased but look it up there plan was laid out by them.

Also forspoken showed 2 skus but wow that was a bad game so keep your expectations low all we know of Disney could so up and add a live service anthem style platform like the skins in battlefront 2.

Or make it like capcom with chapters like the old revelation games

Its ea now not respawn wait and see.

Yep, they keep holding games back making them run on the old hardware. God of War Ragnarok is an excellent example of that.

jznrpg454d ago

Still one of the best games of this generation despite being crossgen.

SurgicalMenace454d ago

Illustrate in what ways that GoW was held back?

Well, since you didn't like that question, how about this one: Prove that any cross gen is holding back current gen? Much like PC games can throttle features on and off due to GPU limitations, so can devs with the PS4 and PS5.

To prove this point, I played Crisis Core Reunion in its entirety on PS4. Upon booting up my PS5 version, I saw a huge difference in AA, load times, FPS, and textures. These are commonly the standard features that have to be adjusted between a high-end and a low-end graphic card. Load up Doom Eternal, World War Z, or any other game that's released on both platforms to see the apparent differences.

That's a good thing. If this was cross-gen, they would just be making the first game again.

Kaii455d ago

Shame Diablo 4 didn't get this, hardware limitations suck ass.

AuraAbjure455d ago

Oh man, this game's gunna be intense. Can't wait!
