Hogwarts Legacy review: a deathly hollow Harry Potter game | Digital Trends

Hogwarts Legacy might bring some warm nostalgia for Harry Potter fans, but a lack of imagination holds back an otherwise boilerplate open-world adventure.

Lack of imagination 😂 I'd say it's the complete opposite. Always one

Jin_Sakai468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

The only lack of imagination is this review. Don’t forget to mention the fact they bring up J.K. Rowling and give it a bad review. Trash review.

VenomUK468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

Everyone's free to feel however they want about J.K. Rowling and to express that. But when reviewing a game the review should be about the game, the experience, to communicate to readers information so they can make an informed buying choice. For the Digital Trends blogger Giovanni Colantonio to downgrade a game because of his aforementioned misogynistic feelings about J.K. Rowling is a dereliction of duty and betrayal of the values of journalism which is to inform -not to educate or influence.

Digital Trends' reviews cannot be trusted and all of this drama by the in-crowd of staff only creates distrust and slowly erodes their marketshare. YouTubers, warts and all, bring you something closer to real journalism.

MrJaggedEdge468d ago

100% agree with this statement. Reviewers should be unbiased and base their review on gameplay. I thought this game was fantastic from start to finish. One of the best launches I've seen in a long time (we all know how great thats been lately) AND it released when it was scheduled this year without further delays as other titles have seen.

SullysCigar468d ago

digitaltrends.com just made the list of sites I'll never click on. I don't need to, since I want objective views and they they can't offer that. Evidently they're railroaded by their wokery, which has absolutely zero to do with the game itself regardless of your views. Truly pathetic journalism. It's now on the same heap as The Guardian.

sadraiden468d ago

@VenomUK misogyny? Nice deflection. While yes, game reviews should be only about the game itself despite the horrendous views of the franchise's creator, you can't deny that there are enough people that care about Rowling's words and actions that it's now relevant to the marketing of the game.

That being said, from what I can tell from the game and its players, is that it's a paint-by-numbers open world game with nothing innovative, capitalising on millennial nostalgia, and a bunch of players that are willing to ignore that they are financially contributing to hate groups in the UK. At this point, no one can say that they haven't heard about JK Rowling's opinions. There's a reason why people don't listen to R Kelly's tracks anymore. Sometimes it's impossible to separate the art from the artist. Also, the HP universe is whack.

MasterChief3624467d ago

You think that's bad, check out Wired's review. 1/10.

bloop467d ago

@masterchief: I just randomly came across the wired review earlier. Disgraceful unprofessionalism.

@sadraiden: Can you give me an example of these "horrendous views" that JKR has? I'm genuinely asking as all I really know of is her comments on women's toilets and sports being restricted to biological women........... which makes a lot of sense to me 🤷🏼‍♂️

REDDURT467d ago

Jk logic is that of most people .

I am definitely buying this game now.

Rutaprkl468d ago

"That’s where J. K. Rowling herself, the author with a history of making transphobic comments and who stands to profit from the game’s success, comes into play.
Avalanche has clearly tried to distance itself from Rowling’s hateful remarks, going as far as to allow players to create a transgender hero. Though in staying true to the franchise’s rich mythology, the narrative is ultimately still at the mercy of the author’s worldview. "
Yeah f*** off with that bs 😂

RaiderNation468d ago

Exactly. Any review that attempts to even mention that shit, I immediately dismiss! Because it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the merits of this game.

NecrumOddBoy468d ago

“ At least Rowling is consistent: Her deplorable views always make it clear where she stands. It’s not surprising when her writing edges into hateful stereotypes. Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t believe in anything, and its frequently illogical story reflects that reality too.”

This trash writer https://mobile.twitter.com/...

🤣🤣🤣

JK is living rent free in his head.

frostypants468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

It's ALWAYS some chronically depressive type, isn't it? They glom onto this nonsense as a form of religion to cope with whatever mental issues they're having.

Jin_Sakai468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

Garbage review! How about you do your jobs and review the game for what it is and keep your politics to yourself.

Imalwaysright468d ago

When science and objective reality are considered "hateful" you know that societies are regressing and not progressing.

closed_account468d ago

I saw the 2.5/5 on the main feed of N4G and thought, hmm I bet it's for this reason. I was proven correct.

JeffGUNZ468d ago

I am so tired of this woke bullsh*t. It's insufferable how people pretend to have their foundation rocked over the most ridiculous and babyish stuff. I have zero interest into Harry Potter but the game looks so good I am leaning to buying it anyway.

JonnyBeoulve468d ago

So many people have become suckered into progressivism. It's illogical and selfish. Digital Trends is trash.

frostypants468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

These authors never demonstrate any knowledge of what Rowlings ever actually said. She never said anything "transphobic". Rationally disagreeing with someone doesn't make one "phobic". It's a bunch of brainless sheep repeatedly bleeting a talking point they heard to score virtue points with the similarly uninformed. "MMMBAAAAAAA ROWLING BAD BAAAAA BAAAAA!"

Anyone who reads her actual "controversial" comments who still thinks she is transphobic is too delusional to even argue with.

jambola468d ago

Yeah if you mention her in the review, despite her having nothing to do with the came
It gets a lil suspicious and hard to take seriously

Political review, nothing to see here

CrimsonWing69468d ago

You guys can quit your bullsh*t smear campaign. Anyone with eyes and a brain can tell you this is not a 5/10 game.

There is no boiler plate open world adventure about this game and the sense of imagination is one of its most stand out features.

Look, as someone who can’t stand the open-world Ubisoft like formula with so much busy work I can tell you honestly, this is one of the most fun open-world games where I do not feel overwhelmed with all the typical busy work routine things you’d find in most-open world games.

I’m not a Potter fan. I don’t hate the movies or anything, they’re fine, it’s just I can take it or leave it sort of thing. I will say exploring Hogwarts has been full of such awe and gave me this joy of like being a kid back in the 80s and watching the movies that brought that magic to the screen. It’s hard to explain but it captures a sense I don’t typically feel in games and it’s been really great.

If you’re even slightly interested in the game I can’t recommend it enough. The crazy part is I wasn’t really hyped on this, but was shocked at how detailed the world is and how much fun it is to play. Definitely a contender for Game of the Year for me.

RaiderNation468d ago (Edited 468d ago )

Its sad that any dumbass with a laptop can now be considered a part of the "media". And its not just in gaming, its in every facet of journalism. Nearly everything now is tabloid journalism.

Was Hogwarts Legacy Only Successful Because Of Nostalgia?

Shahmeer from eXputer: "I've always wondered whether the success of Hogwarts Legacy had much to do with nostalgia. The RPG is great but certainly not free of issues."

Markdn22d ago

I totally agree, and no replay value for sure but enjoyed every minute I was playing it. Not a Harry Potter fan but still really enjoyed

Lexreborn222d ago

I still haven’t finished it, mostly due to it not holding my interest after 20 hours. Wouldn’t say it’s a bad game, wouldn’t say it’s amazing I really can’t judge it fully due to not completing it.

Lexreborn222d ago

lol are people upset because I said I put 20 hours into the game and that because I haven’t finished I won’t criticize it’s value or if nostalgia generates it’s success? That’s funny

CrimsonWing6922d ago

Harry Potter is one of the biggest IPs in the world. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why it sold so much. It’s a great game on top of that, so the math kind of maths here.

Can’t wait for the article on if Zelda or Mario only sold well due to nostalgia.

Crows9022d ago

They're trying to find a fake reason for its success...the mainstream hate how successful it became because of the writer behind the series.

So now they want to say that people bought it not because they liked it but only because of nostalgia....as if harry potter is really that old or even a classic IP in the game industry.

thorstein22d ago

That doesn't even make any sense. The author made those statements before the game released. People knew ahead of time and wanted a boycott.

But most people knew any boycott would only punish the people who worked on the game and put their hearts into it (like most boycotts).

So many people bought it, enjoyed it immensely, and moved on.

VenomUK22d ago

@CrimsonWing69 A greatly in demand IP only takes you so far, if it was crap quality then the reviews and word of mouth would have stalled its sales. But it is a good game (judged by Metacritic and user reviews) and that has given the game legs.

Tzuno22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

ngl, it got me in the first half hour
after that, a big let down, mediocre at every step
only fans are praising it

Markdn22d ago

In what way was it mediocre, can't really find anything about it that was mediocre and I'm not a hp fan

Demetrius22d ago

It's still a good game almost time for a 2nd playthrough, the passion they put into it is🔥🔥 crazy how after a couple months or a year folks get to complaining about this n that about certain games smh childish mfs
