Gears Of War Creator On Gaming's Future

The most recognizable man behind the franchise Gears of War happens to be Cliff Bleszinski. The 33-year-old design director of Epic Games has cultivated a rock star aura, despite the videogame industry's general lack of celebrity. He started out in the business when he was 17. Now he is in charge of one of the largest franchises on Microsoft's console.

DragonWarrior465345615d ago

I wonder if he thinks that weapon balancing is gonna be somewhere in his future. I hope so because I wont buy another one of his games.

Bnet3435614d ago

Alright well, guess I'll be the only one not to diss the guy. He started working in the gaming industry at the age of 17 ... damn that would be a dream come true for me. Wonder how he got a spot.

ChampIDC5614d ago

Play Gears 1, then go back to Gears 2, and then try to tell me they didn't balance weapons better. Also, try playing Halo 3 if you think Gears has bad weapon balance.

Kleptic5614d ago

kigmal...yeah...its a matter of right place right time...

cliffy started when PC gaming was relatively young, at least as an industry compared to what gaming is now...

Romero, who has more or less dropped out of the scene, and Carmack where similar a few years earlier...the success stories of these guys are amazing...Carmack was a college drop out with a 1500 on his SATs...and just said 'i'm going to teach myself how to become arguably the single best programmer alive'...and did it, and he has since taught himself aerospace engineering (literally rocket science; it doesn't get a lot more complex than that)...and works in the field through various charity foundations he created...

Kojima too...entered the business at a young age with the first metal gear back in the 80's...he is worth hundreds of millions now...very little formal training also...

Gates is by far the biggest though...some 'smart' college drop out that turned around and became one of the richest people on earth by figuring out an effective way to make computers accessable to the masses...

the industry is simply too big for that now...growth is on a corporate scale...the time of companies like Valve coming out of nowhere with not even a publisher is very unlikely without some radically different ideas...and ideas are getting less and less radical, because of the saturation of the work force as is...sucks for us I guess...but its great that so many great games get released because of it...

Can't wait to play GeOW3 on PS3

jimbojimbo5614d ago

Epic can put a game on the PS3, but it won't be under the name Gears of War, since Microsoft owns that license as the publisher.

militant075614d ago

i though gears of war 2 stupid game with stupid matchmaking system and full of glitch would it be diffrent if it ported to ps3 ??

and overall im sure 100% it will stay exclusive just like MGS4

boodybandit5614d ago (Edited 5614d ago )

I wont even purchase GeOW3 on any system. I have barely touched G2 in the past month. I tried out the matchmaking patch a couple times and put the game back down. There are way too many bugs, glitches, overall shoddy net code (host team advantage still exist plus other problems), weapon balancing issues and still shoddy match making.

Other than Horde mode, single player ending was weak, online still runs like crap, the game was a huge disappointment for me. Cliffy should be working on fixing GeOW2 instead of discussing the future of gaming. If you can't get your current title working properly why would any one give a sh!t what you think about the future?

uie4rhig5614d ago

microsoft only publishes the title, but doesn't own the rights to it.. Gears of War is licensed to Epic, not Microsoft.. if Epic wants to release GeoW on a different platform, they only have to make sure that it is not GeoW1 or GeoW2 and they have to find a new publisher.. thats all ;)

Bladestar5614d ago (Edited 5614d ago )

@superaktieboy - you obviously know nothing about "Publishing" a game.
Do you even know why companies publish games? Do you think that all Microsoft does is Print the boxes and ship it to stores?

My friend you are very misinformed if you think, a developer can just go to another publisher when they feel like it.

The publisher of a game holds rights to the game it publishes.

Why do you think Microsoft have not being able to get N64 GoldenEye 007?

Now, I am not going to pretend as you are... that I know the terms between Microsoft and Epic... but I guaranteed you that Microsoft did not spend that much money to make Gears what it is today, just to see it go to the PS3.... Gears is to the xbox 360 what Halo was to the original xbox.

There is a better chance of Microsoft buying EPIC than Gears going to the PS3 this generation.

Maybe... just Maybe it will be release on the PS4...

Besides, how many PS3 games sale as good as Gears? Name one... how many games sale as good on the xbox 360?

Do you think it has nothing to do with the fact that Microsoft is the publisher? When it comes to games Microsoft does better marketing than Nintendo and Sony.

Why would Epic want to turn Gears into another Unreal Tournament?

If Epic turns Gears multiplatform... it will be nothing more than just another shooter...

Kleptic5614d ago

not sure where everyone gets that MS doesn't own the name 'gears of war'...cliffy and mark rein both confirmed that MS did...not entirely, as in they didn't own the 'gears universe' but did own the title 'gears of war' and whatever sequels using that title...

which is where Cliffy then stated 'a game set in the gears universe is entirely possible on other platforms'...and that MS signed a 2 part deal for the first 2 games set in said universe...it could simply be that the next game with this universe is simply not 'gears of war'...and could be on other systems...but it doesn't mean Gears 3 is coming to the PS3, if and when that exact title ever shows up...

remember...Gears of War the name was made by MS...the original game was called "Unreal Warfare" originally...and was to be published by MS as a launch title for the 360...but after seeing the game, and the switch to 3rd person (it was originally also to be a fps), MS became much more interested...and allowed Epic more time, more help, and more marketing...Epic was still responsible for the overall game, and own many of the rights to the title...but they do not have complete control over the IP...

uie4rhig5613d ago

http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/...

official GeoW website.. it clearly states "Gears of War, Gears of War 2, the Crimson Omen logo, Marcus Fenix, Unreal, Epic Games and the Epic Games logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Epic Games, Inc., in the United States and/or elsewhere."

if the name Gears of War was owned by microsoft it would say something like this: "Unreal, Epic Games and the Epic Games logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Epic Games, Inc., in the United States and/or elsewhere.

Gears of War, Gears of War 2, the Crimson Omen logo, Marcus Fenix, Microsoft, the Microsoft Game Studios logo, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, Windows, DirectX, and the Xbox logos are either registered trademarks or trademarks of the Microsoft group of companies."

and bladestar, tell me again.. WHO knows nothing about "pusblishing"? anything can be called publishing, but if the contract says the creator owns the IP, then the creator owns the IP.. no questions asked ;)

and Kleptic.. MS may have made the name.. but that doesn't mean MS owns it.. 99% of contracts between publishers and creators of anything says something like this: "Publisher and Creator can suggest ideas, which will be considered as a serious matter" or something in that sense.. in MS and Epic's case, that would be that the publisher suggested that idea to the creator, which are the IP owners

sweeeeeeeeeeeet
Switch and PS5 owners are gonna love this.

Stuart5756120d ago

Every article, console fanboy trite, all these years later. Let me explain it AGAIN, in simple terms for the fanboys. Sentient human gamers do have their preferred platform, however they will buy and own multiple platforms so they can enjoy the games they want to enjoy. I own and have owned multiple platforms, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and now Valve, simply to enjoy a wide range of games across a broad spectrum of platforms. It's great. You don't have to pick a 'team' and cheer them on through thick and thin, dissing the other 'team'. And for you 'VenomUK' to state 'Switch and PS5 owners are gonna love this', proves that you're a bit behind. Learn, enjoy, live, develop, trust and coexist if you can, life is better that way.

Blad3runner00120d ago

@Stuart5756
Well said.
This is why i never understand fanboying over hardware. This is not like a sports team, its just hardware. Why some people have this mentality to pick a side and stick with it and refuse to look at other platforms, therefore depriving themselves of games that are only available on those platforms. They are suppose to be gamers after all?

FinalFantasyFanatic120d ago

It's practically guaranteed to come to PC as well, if that's the case, I might pick it up after it gets a discount or two.

TheEroica120d ago (Edited 120d ago )

Thank goodness for pro gamer companies like Microsoft.... It's about time we unified platforms where now only corporate suits benefit! Pro gamers all the way. Thanks Microsoft!

RaidenBlack121d ago

Yup ... bring Gears 2, 3 Judgement as well as Fable II and Halo 5 to PC

phoenixwing121d ago

Online portions would be a bonus.

FinalFantasyFanatic120d ago

I'm really shocked that Halo 5 still isn't on PC yet, almost everything is ported over and that's the only Halo game that hasn't been ported.

Profchaos121d ago

Take it with a grain of salt this leaker has been wrong many Times

The connection has been rumoured in the past so there's some credibility but it's more if it's actually in testing or not

Father__Merrin121d ago

tell u what gears 3 on series x same 360 game but in 4k and 60fps is a dream it looks crystal clear

Sciurus_vulgaris121d ago

The Series X enhanced versions of Gears 3 and Judgement can at times look like Xbox One titles.

Concertoine120d ago

Yeah i got into Gears 3 multiplayer last year. People still play it a lot. Tons of maps and looks great with the 60 FPS.

Brazz121d ago

It would be funny to see Gears of War collection on Nintendo Switch.

I'll Be Happy With Anything Gears of War, But Nothing Beats A 1-3 Remaster

Huzaifah from eXputer "With a new Gears of War game possible, I'll go ahead and say that the original trilogy was the peak of the series and should get remastered."

Wyesvin125d ago

I wish they would put 2 and 3 on pc

RaidenBlack125d ago

^ this
and judgement as well
Why not Remaster them and release them as Marcus Fenix Collection for PC and Series

phoenixwing124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

I would buy it. I sh1t on microsoft alot but their gears of War series I loved. Some great gameplay and if they would keep up the multiplayer I'd play that too.

CrimsonWing69125d ago

1-3 are incredible with each one being bigger and better than the last. I don’t know what it is, but 4 was super underwhelming to me and 5 was slightly better than 4, but I didn’t feel the same epic feeling I had when going through 1-3. I hope 6 brings that epicness back, but yea like a full remake of 1-3 with current-gen visuals would be *chef’s kiss*.

ocelot07125d ago

I was actually devastated with Gears 1 Remaster on Xbox and PC. From when the OG released in 2006 right up until Gears 2 released a few years later. Me and a small group of friends would play it almost daily.

When the remaster arrived. It was annoying that they changed the way you could find a create games. The PC version was dead on arrival as it didn't release on steam just the crappy windows store so about 7 people (including me) bought it. I think I managed to find about 5 games in the first week of release. After that it was just a ghost town.

Not sure about Xbox version. Didn't actually try it until I got a series s in late 2022. It was completely dead online.

chicken_in_the_corn125d ago

A new game would be best. I don't understand why gamers want to rebuy old games over something new.

Juiceid125d ago

It an excuse to revisit something you loved a long time, and it’s prettier and shinier!

raWfodog125d ago

Yeah, new game is always better in my book but remake/remaster is definitely a good runner-up.

franwex124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

Agreed. The old games are there anyway.

I went back and played them all again in anticipation of Gears 5 with a friend and they hold up really well. In fact, they were more fun than the recent ones in some ways.

neutralgamer1992125d ago

we need all gears of war games on steam please
