I want one just for that ability to replace the sticks if necessary.

_Decadent_Descent571d ago

It'll be nice not to have to tear my controller apart and resolder analogs in, but I'm concerned on how much they're going to cost. Nothing about this controller comes off as being inexpensive. I mean it is Sony after all.

Eidolon571d ago

Replacement sticks are $20 each.

Bobertt571d ago

It's $200 for it and $20 for the sticks. It's $70 for a regular one you could buy 3 controllers for $210 instead of paying $220 for this and 1 stick replacement. I doubt you will go through more than 3 controllers in the next 3-6 years so it's better to stick to the regular controllers.

571d ago
Gardenia571d ago

You mean because of the stick drift that still does exist? I was really disappointed that the PS5 controller had the same joystick mechanism as the PS4. That didn't even bother trying to fix it.

Eidolon571d ago

Had to replace too many PS4 controllers, not because of someone with the left stick just wouldn't register a full forward, it was a complete nightmare in FPS games and noticeable in TPS too, I've tried everything short of replacing the stick.

VenomUK571d ago

FFS it's not cheap is it?! I like the idea of customising buttons so I can use different ones from games that hurt my index fingers but not sure if that's worth the price of a budget console. If you're competitive when playing online then this could be perfect if it gives you an EDGE! .... I'll get my coat.

Looks nice but that price is silly and the controller should be no more then 120 max. It's the same for MS's cheaply made elite controllers overpriced and not well made.

crazyCoconuts572d ago

There's a lot more going on in this controller vs. a Xbox controller, even when compared to an elite

572d ago
crazyCoconuts572d ago

Wrong on a number of counts. List of features on a base PS5 controller is common knowledge, you can educate yourself via google

PapaBop571d ago

What is going on in the controller to justify the price? The regular Dual Sense is easily the best controller I've had and at an extremely competitive price point. I don't see anything on the edge which could justify me spending that amount on a controller, especially with PSVR 2 around the corner.

--Onilink--571d ago

Its kind of weird, because on one hand some of internals are definitely just as cheap as a regular controller (especially bumpers and analogs), but the overall build quality of the rest of the controller + materials used are definitely a significant upgrade over a regular controller. Its pretty easy to tell just by the weight and how it feels

So that definitely has an impact on the perceived value (though still quite expensive tbh). I’m hoping Sony is also improving the materials a bit if they are going for this kind of price and its not the same plastic shell and components

outsider1624571d ago

For that price..I'd rather save up for the PSVR2. Or just buy 3 controllers.

Limitedtimestruggle572d ago (Edited 572d ago )

I really can't justify getting one at that msrp lol. Let's at least hope it holds up better than the Elite pads over at Xbox. I've read a lot of bad feedback on those.

StarkR3ality571d ago

On my 3rd one in 10 months so yeah, not great. They do offer a decent enough warranty of 12 months, but after that you're screwed.

I'll never pay over the odds for a controller again, the Elite S2 is fantastic in regards to battery life, the carrying case and customising. But the hardware just let's it down, not actually the sticks funnily enough, it's the shitty bumpers that were carried over from the Xbox one controller, the stick drift isn't the issue in my experience.

Hopefully Sony have figured it out though, my dualsense has been perfect after 6 months or so.

Limitedtimestruggle571d ago

Yeah this echoes pretty spot on with what I've read on other forums/threads. For the premium price there should'nt be an issue really..at leas more than measly 12 months warranty lol.

StarkR3ality571d ago

Yeah totally, the problem is as well as they only replace the controller with refurbished stock so you're not getting a new one. Would be fine if they checked it properly but they don't, the second controller I got was faulty out the box.

Shocking really.

darthv72571d ago

In regards to the elites, it isnt so much stick drift but the rest of the controller. You alluded to the bumpers but i have also heard the grip has a tendency to flake away / wear off. I havent used one personally but it is things like that which keep me from buying into one.

StarkR3ality571d ago

@darth

Not had that problem, think that was mainly an issue with the V1, only bottom half of the controller was rubber to the grip would come off, the V2 is pretty much all uniform material so it doesn't happen. Like I said though they need to completely redo the bumper mechanism, especially if they're gunna release a V3.

I have mine for about 6 months now and no issues at all , I game everyday for at least 4 to 5 hours daily .. maybe that’s just me though , I tend to take care of my electronics.

StarkR3ality571d ago (Edited 571d ago )

As do I seen as though I still have the orignal controller that's near on mint condition after 2 years :L

With these controllers it's a lottery unfortunately nothing to do with how you handle them as long as you're not stupid. There's a reason why they extended the warranty from 3 to 12 months pal.

--Onilink--571d ago

The pads.. probably not, they all use the same manufacturer in the end.
The Triggers which are the other issue on the Elite (at least its pretty easy to fix) are likely to not be an issue on the Edge though.

I’m still curious to see the materials used and how it feels, because valid criticism of the Elite aside, the build quality of the shell and the other components is definitely much higher and expensive than on a regular one

StarkR3ality571d ago

Yeah it feels great in the hand, it's amazing apart from the issues above, like I said it's only the bumpers I've had issues with.

EmperorDalek572d ago

What on earth is that price... That translates to about $350 NZD. That's ridiculous. Looks good though I guess.

Eonjay571d ago

It's actually pretty cheap for a pro controller. The scuff controllers go for 300 to 400 USD

3 reasons I love the DualSense Edge: The ultimate PlayStation 5 controller

T3:

As someone who plays PlayStation 5 most nights, I've been thinking recently about how much of my time I spend with a DualSense controller in my hands. It's a special bit of kit and with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, it's unlike any controller that came before it.

merlox118d ago

It’s a great controller. The only major issue is that the rubber grips will tear off eventually. But, you can get colored replacements from Extremerate. They come in multiple colors and are easy to install. Here’s a link to their site, if curious.

https://extremerate.com/

NautilusXIII117d ago

Same thing that happened to mine. I did buy the grips, but then later bought their controller shell the day they were available for purchase.

Bathyj118d ago (Edited 118d ago )

I would love to see first person shooters allow you to use the VR controllers as motion controllers. I just bought a gunstock for VR but how good would it be if you could use that in any first person or third person shooter?

Probably wouldn't work. It needs the headset for tracking. I can dream but, if you played it on the headset.

andy85118d ago

I have a giftcard and i want one as I have thumb issues sometimes so this will help a lot but I've been holding off for a discount. I can't believe it's not really had one yet since launch. Expected one on black Friday

FernDiggidy118d ago

I fucking looove this thing. A bit pricey But I love it.

GoodnessGreatness118d ago

It's a great controller but the battery life is absolutely terrible. 3 hours of gameplay and it's already low, it might as well be a wired controller 🤦‍♂️

DualSense Edge Users Play Games For Longer Periods On PS5, Shows Research

A study shows that DualSense Edge users are playing games for over 30 hours, with more sessions and variety compared to the rest on the PS5.

Jin_Sakai256d ago (Edited 256d ago )

When you spend $200 on a controller you tend to use it pretty often.

phoenixwing256d ago

Also the people who buy expensive controllers will be ppl more passionate about the video game hobby.

Eonjay255d ago

It makes sense that people playing more would desire a more durable controller.

Sonic1881255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

I like the fact if you get stick drift, you can replace the joysticks

Jin_Sakai255d ago

True, but you could literally buy 3 brand new DualSense controllers should you get stick drift for the price of the Edge controller.

Sonic1881255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

But what if you get stick drift with those controllers in the future. You will have to pay $70 dollars for a replacement. The dualsense edge joysticks 🕹 only cost $19.99 to replace

Stanjara255d ago

So increasing PsPlus prices are going to result in longer online playing?

IMissJimRyan255d ago

Of course, those willing to pay a lot of money for a controller are those that are deeper in addiction and dependence.

IMissJimRyan255d ago

People enjoy alcohol, drugs and a lot of stuff. But most people that buy an expensive controller are way beyond enjoying games and are truly addicted. When something become the thing you most spend time everyday after sleeping, that's an addiction.
You can say it's an escapism or something like it and it's true. But it's an addiction nonetheless. Like other addiction those who use it tend to deny they are dependent.

Tacoboto255d ago

If you think that about gamers why are you even on a gaming site?

IMissJimRyan255d ago

I just don't pretend that games are not an addiction.

Tacoboto255d ago

I guess the spatula and grill I bought are really just enablers to my grilling addiction...

You're full of wisdom.

Sephiroushin255d ago

I hardly play and when i do i usually use m&k but i have 2 elites ... You know some people won't break their bank for buying a "pro" controller which is more expensive... Also i am not addicted to work which is the thing i do the most after i wake up thanks.

Mr_cheese255d ago

Make it make sense.

Going straight to addiction as your reasoning shows more issues with you than it does with those you're trying to pin

Amplitude255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

@locomorales
That's a horrible and completely incorrect way of looking at this. Saying anybody that buys a good controller is addicted to video games on the same level as alcohol and drugs is bats**t insane lol

I have a $300 custom PS5 controller with 4 back paddles, swappable sticks and adjustable L2/R2 buttons as well as a third party XBox Elite knockoff controller but I only play games maybe a few times per week.
Hell, if Microsoft made an actual Elite controller and added gyro and a trackpad to it, I'd immediately go buy that right now no matter what the cost was (no controller exists that lets you map back 4 paddles to macros {like "Start Recording") in Steam like the Elite controller, but with gyro and a trackpad)

Once you get used to a good controller with back paddles it's really hard to go back to face buttons. Can't even move the camera while reloading or jumping! Insanity. I work full time, I'm not addicted to playing video games. I'd just rather drop the extra money for a controller that does what I want, feels nice for when I do play, arguably gives me a skill boost and lasts a long time. It's not for everyone but it's worth the cost to me and a lot of other non-video-game-addicted people.

Rimeskeem255d ago

Do you know what addiction and dependence are?

I’d imagine someone who spends 200 on a controller plays a lot of games… enough to seek out a 200 controller. This is kinda like saying people who buy cars spend more time driving cars.

Popsicle255d ago

Is this supposed to be a surprise?

“the DualSense Edge controller for the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling accessory of 2023 in the US in dollar sales.“

In dollar sales yes because it’s a whopping $200.

TheCaptainKuchiki281d ago

So? It could've flopped. Just because it's price is high doesn't guarantee a 1st place.

Jin_Sakai281d ago

Well I’m happy it’s selling well but I’m sure as heck not paying $200 for a controller.

Charlieboy333280d ago

@Jin Well you don't have to pay shit if you don't want to. Some people do. What is your point exactly?

280d ago
ChasterMies281d ago

Go to an Apple store and you’ll see PlayStation controllers. PlayStation has made a nice market of selling outside its console base.

S2Killinit281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Its not surprising when you look at how many PS5s are being sold.

TheCaptainKuchiki281d ago

It is surprising because there was so assurance that it would sell well considering its price.
Obviously we need the volume ranking as well.

AmUnRa280d ago

You know that every PS5 comes with a controller...right?
Ps gamers who ae buying an extra controller do that cous they want to play with a friend localy ....right?
Some gamers want to pay $200 to have a small advantage comparing to the standard controller.

KwietStorm_BLM281d ago

Waited years for them to make this controller, but they only put 2 buttons on the back. So sticking with my scuf and bfg til they make a second gen. Considering PS5 sales, it's not a crazy surprise the controller has sold well though, because people like myself have wanted it. I think we're finally at a time where pads and input methods on console are catching on to modern game design.

persona4chie281d ago

It’s not terribly surprising, to me at least. Especially when you consider PS fans have wanted something like this for awhile that’s made by Sony. At least to my knowledge, neither MS or Nintendo have released any new types of accessories for their consoles anytime recently that scratches a certain itch and is made by them.

Plus when you factor in the more “hardcore” audience on PlayStation, especially with games like CoD it kinda makes sense. At least to me 🤷‍♂️
