Scorn Review - IGN

IGN- Imagine if you had to stick your hands into a sink full of dirty, putrid-smelling water to fish around for clues to a mystery. You keep pulling out weirder and more confusing stuff, and you really don't want to go back in again – but what you've found so far makes you extremely curious about what other secrets may be hiding in there. That's the best way I can describe the overall experience of playing Scorn, a first-person puzzle game about exploring the ruins of a dead civilization. With a mesmerizing, biomechanical aesthetic inspired by the likes of H.R. Giger and Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, it's far more disturbing and unsettling than it is horrifying. But the vibes it creates can be very potent.

Sooo....what exactly does Microsoft have for this Holiday season?

Shane Kim589d ago

What? 7/10 is not a bad score.

andy85588d ago (Edited 588d ago )

7/10 is a good score but if it was a Sony game it was be getting slagged everywhere for a 7/10. (See Days Gone)

Army_of_Darkness588d ago

Looks like a game I'd probably watch on YouTube because I won't have the patience or complete interest to actually play it.

Terry_B589d ago

a cheaper hardware and mostly the same boring shit you see everywhere else.

Eonjay588d ago

Or you just play God of War.

SyntheticForm589d ago

I had no hope for this anyway.

MetroidFREAK21589d ago

Probably another controller color

Bathyj589d ago

Gamepass.
The best value in gaming.

Profchaos589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

Same to thing they always have.

"Play 100 plus games on gamepaas"

Where the quantity matters and the quality is not talked about but hey gears 5 was good remember gears 5.

bangoskank589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

Plague Tale: Requiem, High on Life, Somerville in 2022, then Redfall and Atomic Heart in the first quarter of 2023. All of these day one on Gamepass. Sony has... God of War: Ragnarok, which looks great, but not much else there that is exclusive and worth mentioning. Not a fanboy of either side, just stating facts, as I can't stand fanboyism. It just shouldn't exist when we all play games for the same reason: entertainment.

Ps5 delivered well for it’s first 2 years, the XsX just had Game Pass.

The ps3 and 4 delivered their entire lifecycles, and they released enough teasers for ps5 games so that I know that will only continue (Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, & Factions).

What makes you think Xbox will deliver a game as fun as Spider-Man 2 anytime soon?

I loved Halo 3, but aside from that Justin Roiland game, Xbox doesn’t have anything launching in a year that makes me think “yeah, the XsX is totally the stronger console, and worth paying more for” ($500 vs $400 for the ps5 digital).

Profchaos588d ago

I think plague tale is a multi plat but I do like how high on life looks.
Still none of those can hit the heights of gow

I actually think this is more indicative that ms pushed all their AAA games out the door last year Forza and Halo when they promoted one major game every month

bangoskank588d ago (Edited 588d ago )

Amerikatrekdraad, point is that there was no point to the original post at all except to take shots at MS. How old are we? And Gamepass is a big draw: Plague Tale might be multi-plat but I can play that and many other games day one with a Gamepass subscription. Can't do that on PS Plus I personally do not own a Series X or S but use it on PC and it's been great. Redfall looks good to me. Whether or not a game is good or not is subjective. Some people might even like Scorn. I'm gonna give it a try tonight. Does MS need more stellar exclusives. Yes, it does. But I've been with what I have on Gamepass and Steam so far. Haven't felt a need to go back to PS5 until GOW 2. An with Nixxes porting games like Returnal and Ghost of Tsushima to PC I'm even more content playing exclusively on my computer.

RedDevils588d ago

Nice PR talk, did MS paid you?

MIDGETonSTILTS17586d ago

@bangoskank

That’s the difference between PlayStation and Xbox players: expectations.

M$‘ first party drought lowered expectations for Xbox players, while games like Last of Us, Spider-Man, God of War, and Returnal have raised expectations for PlayStation gamers.

For me, playing Halo Infinite, feeling forced into Game Pass by having my live cost doubled for no reason…, and waiting for Redfall, Starfield, and High on Life on XsX has not been as fulfilling as playing Demons Souls, R&C, Returnal, and every game updated for the Dualsense controller.

And I don’t expect Redfall, Atomic Heart, Stalker 2, Starfield, High on Life, and Plagues Tale, as great as some of those are, to measure up to Ragnorak, Spider-Man 2, Factions, and Wolverine.

And I expect more than those 4 games after 2023, too.

Maybe Xbox will have started living up to their promises by the end of 2023, they do own enough talent and IPs to do it. I’m just happy that with my ps5, I don’t have to wait that long and trust a company to change finally.

@RedDevils

No, I just have an open mind and don't suck on only one teat for my gaming nourishment.

Hopefully next month's Indie Darktide is fun.

Jericho1337588d ago (Edited 588d ago )

Quite a lot if you’re not the type of person that ‘only counts exclusives’. Grounded came out a couple of weeks ago and Plague Tale 2 is out on GP next week for a start.

Really enjoying the visuals, atmosphere, sound of the game. It is just what I expected so far. Amazingly disturbing visuals at times and so far I like it.

Watching this review was comical 😂

Father__Merrin589d ago (Edited 589d ago )

This is going to be a problem with game pass just filler games. Worth a play but not worth a buy

Better off checking the quickfire indie games on game pass instead

GamingSinceForever589d ago

Umm you pay for Game Pass and get full access to the game. Why does it matter whether or not it is worth buying later? If you like it you can just beat it while available. I’m sorry but your comment makes no sense. If it is worth playing that is all that should matter.

Tacoboto589d ago

It's the difference between "eh, why not" and actual excitement about a title.

You totally could've gone after how he talks about this indie title so negatively then suggests playing other indies instead... Without an example.

Surely he doesn't mean Sable since that got similar ratings last year. Surely he can't mean that awful game where you dodge discs and cogs like a 2000s flash game. He definitely can't mean Hellsinger because I played that this week and it really kinda sucks despite its better reviews.

jznrpg589d ago

GameFly also let’s you rent games but you get to pick what you want it should be hailed more than a mostly rental service that you have no say in . Out of any rental service I like the one that gives me a choice and you can pick any platform . But over renting I rather buy my games and sell the ones I don’t but if I was ever going to rent I would use GameFly . Don’t have to hope it comes someday they have all games day 1.

The philosophical atmospheric horror game “Scorn” is now available for the PS5

"The London-based (the UK) indie games publisher Kepler Interactive  and Belgrade-based (Serbia) indie games developer Ebb Software, are today super thrilled and proud to announce that their philosophical atmospheric horror game “Scorn”, is now available for the PS5 via PSN." - Jonas Ek, TGG.

CappyBlack233d ago

Very lackluster game. Had high hopes for it, but it didn't cut it. Really only for people who appreciate the art of it all. It really doesn't deliver as the Myst title with obscene imagery it was trying to be.

jznrpg233d ago

Some Xbox sites were giving it 10’s

Tacoboto233d ago

The Xbox version's highest review score on Metacritic is an 80.

One review site gave the PC version a 10. One. Not some. One. That same site gave 100s to BG3, Starfield, Horizon Burning Shores, and FFXVI as well.

ModsDoBetter233d ago

Which sites?

As Tacoboto said, only one is showing a 10 and that's for the PC version. I'd also question that publications credibility given they gave Starfield and a dlc a 10 as well.

coolbeans233d ago (Edited 233d ago )

You're a big reason why N4G should add a Community Notes feature.

Tacoboto233d ago

I agree.

The opening puzzle was a little too vague because I missed something super obvious once I realized what it was. The few attempts at combat back at launch were very rough. It gave me one bout of motion sickness in a section of the game was was especially grey and linear.

But when puzzles felt not-too-obscure and you got out of the grey-on-grey corridors, the experience was unique at least.

I didn't have as much fun as something more whimsical and colorful as Call of the Sea, but it wasn't a waste of the 6-8 hours I put into it. A solid 6/10.

TGG_overlord233d ago

Fair enough. Even so, I had a real blast watching the world's most famous e-begger cry over this game though lol.

TGG_overlord233d ago

Imo, it's a very mixed bag of a game...To be fair though, I didn't walk into it with very high expections...

shinoff2183233d ago

To anyone that is interested this does have a physical release coming.

Vits233d ago

This game is great, but it's not for everyone. It doesn't hold your hand nor does it try to be accessible, combat is slow and you are always at a disadvantage so if you do engage you must make your shots count because the penalty for missing is often dying and that can reset a lot of your progress. Puzzles are in my opinion the best part, there are enough of them, they offer a good challenge and are also the best moment to appreciate the art style of the game.

The closest comparison that I can give would be with the original Echo Nights. And just like that game, I feel that you have to approach it with the mindset that it's not an action game and that you will get frustrated if you try to play it as one.

TGG_overlord233d ago

Do you remember old game "Bad Mojo"? That game wasn't for everyone either...This is the same kind of game in that aspect. Besides that, I agree with what you wrote.

Vits233d ago

Oh, Bad Mojo. Completely forgot about it and I definitely agree about it not being for everyone. If I recall correctly I couldn't stomach it for very long and I played it as sort of a challenge.

Concertoine233d ago

I agree, the game has stuck with me in all aspects of presentation: sound and visuals were on point.

crazyCoconuts233d ago

I thought it was pretty good for what it is. Neat how they tell a story without any words. I thought the combat/stealth part was the weakest part of the game. Imo the price should be more like $30 for this one

LordStig233d ago

Tool album cover: the videogame.

TGG_overlord233d ago

The art is on point at least ;)

Elda233d ago

Solely PS5 owners don't bother.

Either REmake4 or Dead Space deserved it.

The philosophical atmospheric horror game “Scorn” is coming to the PS5 on October 3rd, 2023

"This October, PlayStation 5 devotees will at last be able to delve into the unsettling universe of "Scorn", the acclaimed first person horror adventure. Ebb Software in collaboration with Kepler Interactive revealed the Tuesday, October 3rd release date during the Future Games Show at this year’s gamescom." - Ebb Software and Kepler Interactive.

Obelisk92275d ago

Glad it comes to PS5, it was a really interesting experience.

Some parts were awfully bad, but it reaches some remarkable peaks. I think I'll replay it someday.

TGG_overlord275d ago

I know right? That is true...The balance actually reminds me of "Bullet Witch", some parts of the game is just pure awesomeness, while other parts of the game is anything but great...And to this very day, I'm still scratching my head over what actually took place during the development process of "Bullet Witch", since the game is so extremly unblanaced.

jznrpg275d ago (Edited 275d ago )

50$ is a crazy asking price. When it hits the 5-10$ bargain bin I may grab it then. I doubt it takes too long

TGG_overlord274d ago

Based on what? Isn't that the standard launch price more or less? In that case, don't hold your breath ;)
