Chrono Cross And Other Classics Suddenly ‘Expiring’ On PS3, Vita

As if it wasn’t already hard enough to play old PlayStation games like Final Fantasy VI.

porkChop758d ago

I saw this earlier. A whole bunch of purchased PSOne Classics are now "expired" despite being paid for. That had better be a glitch.

Eidolon758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

Super easy to just pirate them, if this is the case ;). Digital sucks blah blah. Could be because of Sony's impending service/digital infrastructure changes and the "expiration" only being a hitch and remedied later.

Bladesfist758d ago

I wouldn't blame digital for this, this is a DRM issue and DRM can be on physical or digital copies. A DRM free copy of a digital or physical game should never have this issue.

Eidolon758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

I didn't blame digital, I figured someone would chime in and shit on digital because there always has to be a war. The typical "you don't OWN the game" argument, and yea DRM is another thing. Hence the remark followed by "blah blah". They're going through some changes for their new services out this June, who knows what's going on in the bones. Remember when people saw PS3(category) games on the PS Store on PS5, something like that? Crazy stuff. Unexplained? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

TravsVoid758d ago

I don't actually want to jailbreak my PS3 because I like being able to connect to PSN. I use it to play a few games that still have online and occasionally download something from my download list.

Teflon02758d ago

What I don't get is, the digital games on those systems don't have internal checks or verifications after download when you buy them. So how that's even happening is a headscratch.

Especially when all mine work right now

Eidolon758d ago

My games are loading on Vita, don't have any PSOne Classics, though.

Eidolon758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

Also, pretty sure there are verifications for licenses.... Not sure about Classics, but I've often had to Restore licenses or couldn't launch on another account. There's definitely some encryption going on.. Not sure online checks on purchased content, but definitely verification(or at some point). I've seen expiration dates on games as far back as late years on PS3, but can't remember what content, could have been for PS+, but now I wonder if every game has an internal expiration date. Definitely present on PS4 and PS5.

Teflon02758d ago

Eidolon
PS4 and PS5 use a verification system.

On PS3 and Vita it Verifies on Install and that's the end of it. I'm not even just saying this. It's an absolute fact. I just today updated my PS3 and put it online for the first time since 2013 and before I did that, I launched PSOne Classics and PS3 games. The only thing I didn't get to play was my Spyro and FFV which was because they were from PS Plus and THOSE needed verification as the last time I downloaded them on it, my PS Plus expired 2015 so I needed to verify any day after that date, Not a day inbetween. From 2016 ish I took the time to learn how Verification worked on Vita because I had a PS Plus issue where I was going somewhere for a week and my PS Plus expired the day after I left. I had no internet when I left and added a year right before I left. I needed a verification to update the expiry because the system will never check even once until it expires. Which owned games it will never check after installed. That is as long as the account is on the console of course.

Teflon02758d ago

I also want to note I own about 75% of PSOne Classics on Vita and PS3. Even a ones that don't work on Vita normally, like in NA Crash and Spyro wasn't on Vita and I have them on mine from the glitch time on PSN and my Crash games never needed verification over the years, updated my vita like 3 months ago after not doing so since 2018 since I only played what was on it anyways.

I tested every game people seem to have issues with including Chrono Cross, trigger, Threads of Fate, etc. None have verification at all. So anyone with the issue is 100% dealing with a glitch

porkChop758d ago

So one person said they played a game just fine, then downloaded the game so they could back up the installer file. Once they downloaded the installer it changed expiration date of the original, already installed copy of the game.

lathspell758d ago

Probably a glitch... I just checked my PSOne Classics in my Vita (fat ver). The PSNplus and purchased ones are working without issues.

porkChop758d ago

Try redownloading one of those games. Don't uninstall it. Just download the installer and see if that triggers it. That's what made a game expire for someone else. Downloading the installer made the already installed copy expire.

ScootaKuH758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

Yup, welcome to the digital DRM future where you own nothing

MadLad758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

Seems like Sony is only having this issue at the moment.
I have games going back to the late 80s on multiple storefronts on PC, and there's not a single game that ever told me I wasn't allowed to play it.

fitofficial758d ago

Eat ze bugs. Live in ze pod. You can't play Spyro anymore because ve must sell it to you again.

blackblades757d ago

Na technically you still own it just access it. Beside it probably glitch and also if i paid for it imma emulate it.

XiNatsuDragnel758d ago

Sony needs to fix this Hella fast

blackblades757d ago

Not like 98% of people going to quickly go play a ps1 classic.

stonecold3758d ago

check my ps3 games tonight they are all there still no issues my end

nevin1758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

I'm going to check too.

Edit: I just tried Street Fighter Alpha 2 and just started Tomb Raider 2 and it works.

Teflon02758d ago

Definitely a glitch some maybe having. I tried the same games before signing into my account after years and they were fine. Including Chrono Cross and tried after signing in and updating, Then checked the info and it was fine. I'm assuming maybe it's people downloading and trying to play games now having the glitch. As I don't know how it's possible to have that issue with games that have no verification checks after purchase and download lol

TravsVoid758d ago

My only digital games are the ones Sony gave us for free after their servers were hacked (Infamous and LittleBigPlanet is what I picked), about 10 PS1 and 1 PS2 game which so happens to be The SpongeBob game Sony removed from the store shortly after release but it still lets me download because I bought it I guess.

Chrono Cross was remastered because the devs feared the classic JRPG becoming "unplayable"

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition owes its existence to the fact that the devs at Square Enix were afraid that the original version of the classic Japanese RPG was about to become "unplayable."

I don't know why they were worried. Emulation has ensured the game (and every other PS1 game for that matter) will live on forever. Maybe they're so out of touch they aren't even aware emulators are a thing.

phoenixwing421d ago

I think they want to be in mainstream not just emulation niche

CantThinkOfAUsername421d ago

Emulation will always be worse than a native port.

sadraiden421d ago

PS1 emulation is essentially perfect. Maybe not frame perfect in the same way that hardware emulation can deliver, but you can't tell the difference. You can run epsxe or duckstation on a potato PC.

Pedrof421d ago

So many games are way more "unplayable" than Chrono Cross, which at least had a rerelease as a PS1 Classic on PS3.

FallenAngel1984421d ago

Why wasn’t Chrono Trigger included in this?

This should’ve been a celebration of the entire Chrono series

DivineHand125421d ago

Based on Square's logic, Chrono Trigger had no risk of being lost to time because you can currently get that game on Android, iOS and PC while the only version of Chrono Cross that existed was on the original PS1 and playstation classics for PS3, PSP and PS Vita. Those consoles are discontinued.

I would love to see them give Chrono Trigger the ff7 remake treatment minus it being episodic.

FallenAngel1984421d ago (Edited 421d ago )

Square Enix has no problem rereleasing their Final Fantasy titles as often as they do. Should apply that logic to CT as well

If Chrono Trigger did get a remake it’d be on the scale of Trials of Mana, Live a Live or DQIII rather than FFVII

shinoff2183421d ago

I'd be fine with that. Stay truer to the original. Combat , everything. Although I enjoyed ff7r the combat nearly put me off the game. I didn't mind the changes to the story.

Chard421d ago

The Steam port of Chrono Trigger, since all of the updates it received, is quite close to being flawless, I wish they’d go the final mile and make the remaining fixes, which should be easy for them to do

Ronmaest421d ago

The most epic game Square has made.

Mobile Games Killed The Dream Of Chrono Trigger 3

A third Chrono series game called Chrono Break was planned, but Square prioritized an MMORPG, and Chrono Break’s concepts were used in mobile games.

Square isn’t what it used to be.

CrimsonWing69432d ago

It’s true.

Squaresoft used to be like the equivalent of Naughty Dog back in the day. When you heard Squaresoft was making a game you knew it’d be a banger.

god I miss those days.

porkChop432d ago

Yeah they used to be the best in the industry. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is the worst decision they ever made. While they had previously talked about merging with Enix, that film flopping so hard left them with no other option.

CrimsonWing69432d ago

@porkChop

My understanding is that merger was happening before the film and the flop of the film freaked them out because they thought Enix would call it off.

I personally wish Square Pictures was a success. I thought the Matrix shirt they did was cool and they were pushing computer animation into a more mature realm.

Unfortunately, Spirits Within noted many and wasn’t the FF movie a lot of fans wanted. I thought it was decent, but something like Advent Children should’ve been the direction they went.

Ronmaest426d ago

To me, Naughty Dog is now Naughtycucks.p after that god awful story in LoU 2.

It was people like Yasumi Matsuno that held it for me, at Squaresoft. The company thought them too radical and ran them out. And now they yearn for people like that. They’re short sighted and pathetic.

GoodGuy09432d ago

Square ruined pretty much every great old franchise they've had.

franwex432d ago

Kinda misleading title, even from reading the article itself.

The staff and management couldn’t come to an agreement and the team moved on. Part of the team went to creat ff11 and the rest to Monolith software. Ideas for this game were implemented in some form to mobile games-later on. Which make sense as early 2000s mobile phones were not as powerful.

Chrono Cross' 45-Character Cast Was Perfect For The Story It Told

Chrono Cross’ massive 45-member ensemble cast has been a hot topic since the game's release in 1999, with many arguing that it was too much of an expansion on Chrono Trigger's compact group of seven heroes. But as imperfect as Cross might have been, its large cast was fitting for the story it wanted to say, and helped it achieve a scope that was really kind of profound.

Chrono cross was good injust wouldn't put it up there. I despised the leveling system.
