Xbox 360 leads PS3 by 1m in Europe

Xbox 360 currently has a combined lead over PlayStation 3 of around one million sales across five key European territories - the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

That's according to GfK Chart-Track data seen by Eurogamer that shows like-for-like sales of console hardware across October and November.

IF the XBox 360 does have a 1 million console lead in Europe than why has it not placed a single title in the top 10 sales this week in the UK, France, Italy and Spain? Me thinks there may be some pencil whipping going on on MS part to stir up FUD and make itself look better than it really is.

I am not saying that GFK is corrupt. I am speculating that the 1 million units don't add up especially with the software sales seen throughout Europe over the past 4 weeks. In general over the course of the past 4 weeks the PS3 has been seeing much better overall software sales than the XBox 360. One would think that if a unit has 1 million more installed that the numbers would show otherwise.

this confirms what all non-fanboys knew - that the 360 has been doing really well in Europe since the pricecut. Thats not to say anything against the ps3 which is a great system but the xbox has turned itself around in Europe. And for the fanboys going on about attatch rates - if you actually look at the charts you'll a healthy number of xbox and ps titles in european charts with the xbox doing better in the UK than everywhere else. All three report consoles sold to retailers and distributors only as far as financial statements go. They only report units sold to consumers to show brand recognition, and most of the time that's only at major industry press events like CES, GDS, TGS, or E3.

I have not once heard this on N4G, in fact all I heard is rabid sony fanboys claiming the 360 is dead in Europe. Most reasonable people on this site knew that both consoles were fine. Now this article comes along which proves them wrong and you act like you knew all along. But now you are claiming that xbox software sales are appaling which is another lie. Right. Killzone will be an amazing game but to hell will it bring down the 360. I'm not even going to go into how many times I've heard this with x game. The only thing that will help the ps3 overtake the 360 is a ps3 pricecut as currently the 360 is more valuable at its pricepoint than the ps3 is at its own pricepoint and consumers are responding to this. Major manufacturers including Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp. are already reeling from slumping global demand. Yen appreciation erodes overseas profits when repatriated to Japan and makes products more expensive abroad.

Now how bad is it for Sony?? Answer - BAD!

Look at the history of the Yen. When the PS3 was launched in the U.S. the Yen compared to the Dollar was in the ¥117-¥118 range, today its at ¥89!! Representing a whopping 25% drop!!

Sony is making 25% less money on every PS3 sold in the states since launch, that doesn't even include the official price drops.

PS3 - 40% Price Cut Since Launch

Now what happens if we take into account the official price cuts?

Nov 2006 - Sony made ¥58,882 from every 20 gig PS3 sold ($499)
Dec 2008 - Sony makes ¥35,511 from every 80 gig PS3 sold ( $399)

That's a 40% price cut since launch! Do we really expect Sony do cut another $50 off the console? That would amount to a 49% price cut from launch!

How much further can Sony go? Can the U.S. dollar rise back up against the Yen and how long will it take? No one really knows.. but the Yen is at a 13 year low and this will lay heavily on Sony's decisions to cut the PS3's price in the US for 2009.

This is the problem that sony has but once it is rectified we will see a ps3 pricecut and an awesome comeback for sony.

So Morganfell stop lying and just admit for once that MS did well against sony in this instance. And also stop with these lies about software sales - or lets see some evidence to back it up because I see xbox software doing absolutely fine in Europe.

And please have an open mind that MS may actaully have something planned for next year that hasn't been announced. Fanboys like you are unbearable.

Please tell me that you are just being facetious. Well just in case you are not.....giving how many consoles the Wii have sold why does it not have all 10 sale spots on lock? Hmmm.......could it be that in order to have a game in the top 10 spot.....the masses have to buy it. So, is it not possible to a bigger hardware fan base, but have less of those users purchase the software? When you combine US Sales and Japan sales the PS3 moves ahead of the 360. By 30,000 consoles.

Now combine the European sales. Despite the bump MS has received, at the end of the year Sony will still have outsold MS worldwide. Outselling means they continue to gain. It is that simple and is the reason Sony hasn't cut the price of the PS3. Everyone keeps throwing their head around. Everyone except PS3 owners because they know. Sony hasn't cut the cost because they do not need to.

And say what you want, Killzone 2 will be the impetus that crushes the bump because bumps do not last. They settle back to normal and the PS3 will go back to making it's gains passing the 360 in total European sales before next June. Goodbye MS, enjoy your new home in last place.

yes it can be argued that sony do not need to drop the price - well if fact if they want the ps3 to be profitable next year it will be hard for them to do so. However since microsoft price cut in Europe they have been making huge gains and especially where I live in Europe. MS won't be in 3rd place next year there is no chance of it. The lead after christmas will be around 8 million. I think it will take sony at least until christmas 2010 to overtake the 360 (which I think it will eventually do). However the longer the ps3 doesn't have a price cut the further it falls behind - that is why it needs a cut because it is still nowhere near mass market price. Thats the problem MS had before this year as they refused to cut the price and part of teh reason why the wii is so successful - because it started off at a mass market price - impulse buyers could actually afford one unlike the competition.

Just look it up yourself. And one months worth of data can turn in a second. Just look at 360 sales in the US for Sept and Oct - down 37% and 35% from last year with the price cut before November spiked. Just goes to show you have to look at longer term data for the bigger picture, and the long term data shows the 360 in decline in the US.

And you're right about the PS3's increase. If they sold 1 this year, 2 the next year it would be whopping increase but it would still suck. Of course, that's really not the case now, is it? It sold millions last year and millions this year. But pointing your finger at Sony yelling "Look, look over there!" still doesn't change the fact that the 360 sales are down this year in the US, and that doesn't bode well for the system long term. I'll be curious to see if MS games is making any money again with the price cut or if this is a desperation move to try to stem the bleeding of slowing sales in their main territory at the cost of what little profit they were making.

You are right the sales are down over all, but also remember that Halo 3 released in September of last year, and really help push hardware. I can see the same thing happening to the PS3 when June numbers come out for next year. and that is because of MGS4, but that is assuming no major title is release during that time.

Halo didn't release until the end of September, and from Sept to October in 2007, Halo 3 didn't appear to really have much of an impact on console sales. This year, Sept and Oct saw the price cut and still sales were down 35% for both months before the November jump. My point in bringing attention to this wasn't to bash the 360, but to illustrate that month to month data doesn't tell the whole picture.

And then you guys come along and focus on month over month data again. Bury your head in the sand all you want but as a 360 owner and fan I'm concerned that the 360 is in decline. Sales in the US are down, exclusives pale in 2008 vs 2007, and things aren't looking up in 2009. I'd like to play my 360 a little more before they replace it with the 720 in a couple of years, thanks very much, but I don't see much that's getting me excited in the next year. That's just me.

I never said that. I said 360 sales were down in the US for 2008. PS3 sales are up 40% in the US, about 65% worldwide over last year. Same goes with Wii sales. This isn't meant as a slam, but we're all aware of the 360's struggles with hardware. Some cultures just hold quality of a product higher than others.

The problem with tracking Europe as a whole is that in some of these countries, no one tracks that data. In the US you have the NPD group, which tracks a few sources and guesses for the rest to come out with their predicitions. All we really know for sure is what leaves the factory and what's sold to the retailers - and those numbers we can only get from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft. Other than that - there isn't a big tracking system in place that registers across every store/every country when a game or console is sold. Some retailers even refuse to release their own data. We only hear from countries with tracking data because no one else is really tracking that much anywhere else. Company's can try to guess, but it's never going to be 100% correct and if no one is paying for that data anyway, what's the point?

As for the developers comment - that confused me. There's a tonne out on the PS3 and in the works. I don't think there's any issue with developers. I certainly don't see a lack of quality titles on either the PS3 or 360.

People were claiming that there were no big hitters coming for 08 as well, then BOOM! Fable 2 and Gears 2 drop. Sony and Microsoft just have two different strategies, nothing more. And even if Microsoft doesn't have a whole lot of first party exclusives coming next year, it really doesn't matter because its not going to stop 3rd party publishers from putting games on the 360. I find it so funny how people try to spin this as "360 won 2008". I must admit, 2008 was looking to be Sony's year but it didn't fully deliver. From the software perspective, it was Sony's year though. The only thing keeping the 360 on the same level of units sold were the price cuts. So yeah, 360 and PS3 sold about the same this year, while PS3 was supposed to catch up and maybe even get ahead.

While you guys got Gears 2 and Fable 2 (among with the awesome multiplat games like GTA4 and Fallout 3), we got all the multiplats along with an awesome collection of 1st and 2nd party games (even some 3rd party stuff that MS didn't want to/couldn't buy out). I'm not gonna list all of them, because I think others have done that plenty on N4G. And I think we're long past the point where the 360 version has a better framerate or (slightly) better looking graphics.

People say the SDF is bad. When someone points out reported software sales show how a console with a "supposed" 1 million lead is selling less software people go nuts. There is no spin or conspiracy theory, just speculation that the numbers somewhere are off. It stands to reason if console A has 1 million more than console B it should sell more software on a weekly basis. YET according to all of the European charts over the past month this doesn't hold true at all.

EDIT: The funny thing is that the people that are disagreeing with me are the same ones relying on these same charts for console sales as well. That's actually true though what you say.Certainly regarding a Sony fan's reluctance to see good in anything other than the Sony brand - it was the same with PS2 when showing off the the obvious graphical differences between xbox and PS2

I am from europe and where I live only 1 major retailer and like 2-3 small shops sell x360s. The small shops sell them modded. Why? Its a hassel for them due to its patethic hardware.

Also X360 has no exclusives games for someone with decent PC, which is needed for everyday needs, to play the best versino of them. Mass Effect Bioshock etc.

I can get all my gaming needs with PC + Wii + PS3. The Best version of Microsoft's "exclusives" games.

M$ doesn't even have XBL in all european countries. So does Sony, it doesn't have Playstation STORE in all EU Countries. At least Sony lets you play online while M$ doesn't unless you make a fake account.

One year? What about the MANY years headstart Sony had over Microsoft in the console business all together. Sony had the successful PSOne, and then the highly successful PS2 to build brand recognition and a strong, loyal fan/userbase.

Take that into consideration and the "but, but, but, but the 360 had been on the market longer" seems pretty small and inconsequential no matter how many tears you have in your eyes when you say it.

Wipe away those tears and pull that Sony ding dong out of you rectum and you will see that what Microsoft has been able to do with the 360 is quite impressive. Sony on the other hand stopped this practice back in early 2007, and only reports Sold To Customer. This was done at the request of shareholders so that they could accurately judge sales performance.

Microsoft plans to ship a total of 25 million units by the end of 2008. Sony's PS3 sales figure was 16.8 million units at the end of September. Assuming the PS3 does as well in 3rd Quarter 2008 as it did in 3rd Quarter 2007 (sales are up 70% this year, so it's a very humble assumption) then Sony should sell a total of 21 million units by the end of 2008.

Hardware companies tend to keep a 1 million unit buffer in order to accommodate sudden sales spikes/dips, so that should put Microsoft at 24 million units sold by the end of 2008. This is also assuming they sell the same amount of units as 3rd quarter 2007. Sales for the 360 are down 3% compared to last year, so that's a solid prediction.

We're potentially looking at a 3 million unit gap between the two consoles by the end of 2008. If Sony becomes more aggressive with their pricing in 2009, we can expect them to easily surpass Microsoft's install base. But it's obvious Microsoft sees this coming, and will do anything to keep Sony in third place. It's going to be a LOT of fun to watch.

then what the Hell was that report about a month back by Microsoft saying they passed the Xbox's install base and are at 25 Million installed. If games store aren't selling xbox, they wouldn't get new shipments. Why would they buying more when they can't sell it. Because people are buying the console, that is why they need more unit. Same for PS3. Nonetheless, do you have any proof somewhere that sony really only count console sell to customer? I need something concrete please. Like NPD and charttrack to back up Sony PR claim (not VGchart or Sony PR giving percentage increase)

You also have to consider the fact alot of ps3 owners only use their console as a blu ray player, i think this is evidently shown by the total lack of game sales.

If the ps3 didn't have a blu ray player do you think it would have sold asmuch as it has?

Not everyone bought the ps3 because its a good console or supposedly a good console, but because it was ment to be the best blu ray player on the market.

So a Console & Blu Ray player is yet to outsell the 360!

Bare with me, I'm about to do some epic spin here.

At last count, Microsoft were leading by 2.5-3m units IN THE UK.

If they have a lead of 1m units, just in these tracked countries, the 360 is getting absolutely destroyed by the PS3 by huge margins on the mainland.

For arguments sake, if Microsoft have that lead in the UK, by GFK say 1m difference for these 5 countries (were know there's other countries in Europe), then taking the rest of Europe which weekly charts from the likes of the Netherlands show (you know, the one's that are deemed "irrelevant").. wouldn't they be pretty much neck and neck or Sony ahead?

Edit: If you disagree with this, I'd like to know where I've gone wrong, but sales figures are so unreliable for Europe, I'm making it clear these are just assumptions.

All I know is I have bought 2 xbox 360s. The second one was bought after the first one got RROD and my warranty was up so I had to do 'keep it alive' as long enough till I bought a new one. The only reason I bought another one was to finish Gears of War 1 and now also Gears of War 2. Therefore, these numbers must include all xbox 360s that were never returned for warranty from people like me.

ps3 must be doing extremly well in europe. 360 not so much. this indicates that the 360 will barely make it to 15 million lifetime in europe. aso isnt ps3 selling faster in europe than the ps2 was in the same timeframe? also this 1 million lead is coming from the uk isnt is? last i heard the 360 was a mil ahead there.

Hi,I'm italian and I can say that here the sells for xbox360(hardware and software) are very slow.Wii sell very very well and then there's ps3.xbox360 aside uk market in europe is unknown to many people or simply people ask for nintendo or sony console.however in many cases there's a hate for Microsoft products.sincerely I don't see all those xbox360 into gamers houses like eurogamers say,but maybe i'm wrong.how knows.

Lol xbox360 came out in dec 2 2005 (EU) and PS3 came out in march 2007 (EU. That's almost 2 years with a sh!tty 1 million lead and with a price of a pair of shoes here in EU. Now if anything needs saving it's Xbox.
