I wonder how much more or less they would have sold if it was just a single purchase without the friend pass.

It would have been a disaster because you literally can’t even start the game without two players.

It does have local co-op. You can play without the friend pass but the question here really is if 2 people would each buy the game to play with each other or if they would not be able to justify that cost and would just skip on the game altogether until a sale or something.

They must have done some focus testing on it and figured out that giving a friend pass would benefit them in the long run.

Couldn't figure out how to play with the pass, but played locally anyway, it's split-screen regardless.

Didn’t they do the friends pass on their previous game when you escape the prison? That was back in 2015 I think so they knew what they were doing.

Same, this and Terraria me and my brother platinumed togethers, I think it's probably the most definitive co-op experiences I've seen in a while.
