Can Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 compete with modern racing sims?

In a world of Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2, and iRacing, can Gran Turismo 7 measure up and stay on course?

darkrider835d ago

The question isn't that. Can modern racing Sims compete with Gt? For all have seen and heard from Yamauchi gran turismo is a beast of a racing sim and the biggest car rpg ever.

Charal835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

I would agree.
Having played Asseto Corsa with a wheel, and made some real life race driving lessons on rally cars, GT is the game where I have the better felling in term of mass transfert, degressive braking technique and overall car physic vs what i have learn in real life;

Plus, GT as always been a car lover game where you enjoy the experience not only racing, in a refined and relaxed way.
Features like brand museums since Sport is far above any competition for me.

I think GT offers the best overall experience in terms of car culture things along with good racing physics, however in just racing physics alone its not even in the same ball park as iRacing or Assetto, those are hardcore racing sims, where as GT, especially GT Sport feels more akin to something of a hybrid in between iRacing and the Forzas

neutralgamer1992835d ago

I don't know why people are always asking these questions as far as console gaming is concerned GT is the best Sim racing out there and it has been that way for a long long time. In business we measure the success of a product by the amount of hype it generates and the amount of money it generates and in both of those aspects GT has outdone is competition by a humongous margin

Biggest Factor GT is a system seller there are people who will buy PlayStation just for GT. And I really like this new approach from Sony where they will do a state of play about a single game and truly have a deep dive because my opinion that is the best way to get the information out and create hype

With the release of next GT imminent we are very close to the series selling over 100 million copies

Should be a lot of fun to play

n1kki6835d ago

I guess it depends on the target audience. I won't consider GT because it's not on PC where I have a full blow racing rig. Obviously an edge case, and yes I could hook it up to the PS5. But I don't want to silo where I am playing my games. If they released on PC it would undoubtedly pull interest from the sim racing crowd.

That said, console to console, I love GT and it was always my preferred racer until I moved to PC.

Sgt_Slaughter835d ago

That's not even close to accurate. PC sim racing has always been at the forefront of realism and it shows. Right now gamers can choose from so many state-of-the-art sims (iRacing, rFactor 2, AC/ACC, Automobilista 1/2, RaceRoom, etc.) that have laser scanned tracks, 1-to-1 physics and tire physics as well as realistic weather. GT is one of the best on consoles but it's not in the same class. Now that consoles are getting better and can handle better physics, PC sims are making their way over and going to give GT some competition in the console market. ACC already has last gen and will probably get updates for PS5/Series.

frostypants834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

No racing (or flight) game where you can be competitive with a gamepad will ever truly be a hardcore sim. Doesn't mean it isn't great in its own right.

Roarke834d ago

Its not sim, its great game, but not racing sim ;)

It will sell twice as much as all those, due to the fact it doesn't need a £2000 PC to tun at its best.

So yes the question is... Hoe can other car based games compete with GT at its low price point compared to others..

This is like saying a Ferrari is better than a fiesta. But yeh.. the ferarri is ¹⁰ times the price.

Petebloodyonion835d ago

This has nothing with PC gaming versus console gaming since some of the titles listed are on console (they even mentioned GT sports as a pure sim).

Atticus_finch835d ago

Dude that's not even it. GTs was futures proof and lay down the foundation for weight and feel of the vehicle something that many Sim racer can't even get right. GT7 is stacking even more advance simulation on top of that. At this point the competition is way behind GT. Doesn't matter what PC you have.

Sgt_Slaughter835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

My 500 laptop runs every modern racing sim on (almost max or at max) settings, I don't think you have an understanding of this subject manner if you honestly think it really takes that much of a PC. Plus hardly anyone can get a PS5 if they want to, whereas PC's prebuilt and laptops are readily available as well as heavy discounts on Steam every sale. rFactor 2 was just under $7 with tons of free mods in the workshop, Assetto Corsa was in a Humble Bundle for $12 with other racing games and that title has the most quality mods I've ever seen for a sim.

There's ways to defend GT without making up talking points. Also for GT it's 400/500 (plus tax) for a console + 70 game (plus tax) + 60 annual online charge (plus tax), so it's not nearly as cheap as you're saying. Not to mention much worse wheel compatibility whereas PC has fully functioning wheels dating back to the late 2000s that still work perfectly. Couldn't do that from PS4 onward.

purple101834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I take all your points.

They are good points.

I disagree with a £500 laptop could run games on max (with 60fps) I know you didn't mention the 60fps so maybe you play at 30?) Or maybe you can because those games are less taxing than a full blown AAA open world game ? Because a cheap laptop wouldn't run those types of games for that cheap.

I haven't gamed on PC myself since the original Ms flight sim & quake 3 arena! (I'm 35 now)

But yes very good points. I forgot to mention you need to pay for ps+ and on PC you don't.

TheLigX834d ago

GT7 will 10000% find its way to PC. The PC sim market is sizable and sony will want a piece of that pie.

Extermin8or3_834d ago

Possible but not at all set in stone. Polyphony digital are meticulous with their work and may not want another studio handling a pc port. If they have the resources to port gt7 to pc, continue to support gt7 with new content the way they have gt sport and start their next project is questionable.

I have bought all GT games since back in the PS1 days. Back in the day it was the closest a to a sim a race game could be, but now with other sims like iRacing it is clear that Gran Turismo isn't really a sim, it's a semi sim racing game.
Anyone saying that GT is a true racing sim is just a fanboy. I'm saying this as a fan of the GT series, with thousands of hours in 25 years.

Flawlessmic835d ago

Its so much a semi sim that it has FIA u know the actua racing governing body as a partner and its best drivers compete in real racing catergories and the lap times are almost bang on what they would be in real life.

Not to shabby for a semi sim.

Dfooster835d ago

Assetto corsas physics are a league above gt sport, but that's not to say both can't exist in their own eco-system. You really need a wheel with assetto corsa because it's feedback is so good you are correcting oversteer subconsciously before you visually see it so good are the physics and force feedback. Wheras in gt sport the physics are designed primiraly to be played with a gamepad, so how far can they go and still keep it playable on a pad is definitely a factor in why gt is a semi sim and not a full blown sim.

Imalwaysright835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

Marketing deals means absolutely nothing to the merits or lack of merits of GT and its best "drivers" get actual training before getting in real races. If anyone thinks that being good at playing GT or any other racing game/sim in existance qualifies them as being real racing drivers is completely delusional.

Imalwaysright834d ago

SniperControl

"Polyphony Digital, teamed up with Sony and Nissan to create GT Academy, a competition within the Gran Turismo games that gives winners a chance to become real racing drivers. The contest starts with a series of time trial events in the game, with the winners flown to Silverstone in England to take part in a reality TV show and racing driver bootcamp"

I didn't need confirmation for what I said but it's appreciated anyway.

You need more hours in GT then, doesn't look like you understand GT at all. It truly is THE real driving simulator. Nothing comes closer.

Gran Turismo has been around longer than any other racing simulation games. The way I see it, it doesn't need to compete.

Gran Turismo is a veteran and still deliver.

Recent State of Play demonstration shown how much love and time it takes to build Gran Turismo 7. I'm sure there are lots of happy fans of this franchise and no doubt Forza, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Project Cars etc., fans will be impressed. There are no need for rivals. The fanboys "wars" are long gone in the past, possibly there are still those refused to give up their pointless fight.

These replies just make people sound like they haven’t read the article, but are instead replying to the headline.

Bathyj835d ago

Yep that's what I did.
Why would I read an article with a headline like that?

Atticus_finch835d ago

The headline is stupid and is asking the wrong question. Why waste time reading it.

thorstein835d ago

Stupid headlines looking for clicks means I won't click. Simple as that.

senorfartcushion834d ago

It doesn’t mean that you have an excuse not to read.

It doesn’t have to be any crap articles either; a book will do. Read more.

RedDevils834d ago

My guess is you're the author of this very stupid article?

thorstein834d ago

Wow. You don't understand that the very act of reading increases people's ability to think critically. Thinking critically allows us to separate the wheat from the chaff. Those who read a headline that is clearly clickbait (aka yellow journalism and sensationalism) have already made the critical analysis needed to determine that the material is not worth their time.

"Read more." You don't know anything about the people commenting here and you proclaim that you are the gatekeeper of who should and should not "read more." Astounding.

senorfartcushion833d ago

Thorstein

Lol no. People just need basic literacy more than ever, especially on social media sites and comment sections like this.

You’re forgetting about the entire universe of critical thinking that awaits by being used to deconstructing articles you do not approve of.

But obviously you were never going to remember that part as you’re currently making excuses for people not to read. Trying to make excuses for yourself too by the sounds of it. 😅😅😅 28517;

Lazy and embarrassing really

thorstein833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

Again with the assumptions about what other people do or say or are. Should have figured you're just a troll.

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC35d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier35d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k435d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8535d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga34d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS734d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog35d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto35d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies35d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS734d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast35d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.
